For a bit of clarity, I believe between 2 and 3 the truth about Operation Snake Eater and a lot of the stuff regarding the Boss and Big Boss became more public knowledge somehow. I don't think it was out there for everyone, but I'm pretty sure that Snake and Otacon found out about it, so Snake's view on his dear old daddy changed a bit.

Even locked in the cell in MGS1 Snake said his only friends were Grey Fox and Campbell which surprised the Colonel. Campbell did him dirty, but kinda came around to his side at the end and was sort of being forced into a lot of it same as Snake. The Secretary of Defense, Jim Houseman was the real dick behind forcing Snake and Campbell to do it. Also Roy didn't know about FOXDIE either iirc. So yeah dick move, but Snake's letting it slide.

Snake & Otacon use the Mk II as a video screen sometimes, but a lot of the codecs you see aren't actually visual, it's just there for the player. Just like in previous games they weren't actually seeing each other while they were talking.

BTW dude, you might wanna check out Portable Ops. It doesn't really make a big impact on the rest of the games, but it does have one or two things that come back up in 4. Then after 4, if you want any more MGS you can't skip Peace Walker and go straight to V. Peace Walker's basically the 5th main game honestly.

The idea is that the pastoral sound of cicadas and cows calms people down and/or draws them out, then the GEKKOs can murder them. But really, it's just more Kojima weirdness.

IIRC, Naomi changed the virus to trigger randomly. It could have activated while he was walking away from Shadow Moses, it could have hit him on the Big Shell, or Snake could die of old age before it ever triggers.

Also idk if it shows in whatever you're watching, but in both that area and the previous one, if you help the guys losing the war out they'll all fight alongside you. Right after the cutscene with Octopus and Vamp, you can sneak down and take out all the guards to free the prisoners. They'll all get guns and it'll help you out.

If you're receptive to streams or let's plays, I recommend watching Vinesauce's full stream of it. Otherwise, you should be able to get everything you need from cutscenes.

The game has pre-chapter briefings as well as regular cutscenes. If you want the full experience, then find a "Full MGS4 movie" video with those briefings as well as the usual cutscenes. Gameplay, aside from three or four iconic moments, is more or less secondary.

I may have some of the minutia wrong about the Patriots, but I recall GW being the AI that was perfected during the events of MGS2 to control the flow of information. There are 4 other Patriot AI's that do other things such as JD which is the lead AI of the Patriots. The other 3 AIs aren't really mentioned that much but its implied they do other things such as control the economy*

*(An AI controlling the economy is interestingly is not that far out of an idea, it was actually attempted in Chile before America and Pinochet overthrew the Chilean government https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Cybersyn . I actually think Kojima may have had Project Cybersyn in mind at some point in time because Militaires Sans Frontires's connection with South America in the 1970s.)
