asking because with everyone talking about the death of network television every so often i gotta wonder....how long until we reach the point where a netflix original series has as much of a reputation as say something like family guy or simpsons?

or will that just never happen?

No. Too many options for viewers today.

Not until NFI becomes more universal? After all, it's not just a matter of being good

No, which isn't a bad thing. Having a wide selection of shows that can appeal to more niche audiences is better than a handful of massive hits that try to please everyone at once.

Ignoring that the budget for the show will be inherently lower.

I don't think we would ever get to that point, and that is a good thing.

The one thing about Netflix shows is they know when to stop, and the thing about Simpsons and Family Guy is they don't. Plus with Netflix you inherently aren't "filling a time slot", you are making a season every year or two and if people like it and want more, you make another (if you have story to tell). If not, then you have tons of other shows to watch (both original or just available). Both Simpsons and Family Guy just feel like they have been going on for as long as they have because Fox needs something on Sunday night and they were popular 10 - 20 years ago.

What? Network TV isn't dying, and nobody has ever said that it is dying.

You're probably thinking of cable. Cable providers like Comcast are dying because more and more people are choosing not to subscribe to cable.

Network TV isn't dying though. A lot of "cable cutters" still watch network TV through an antenna or through streaming options such as Hulu and Sling TV.

I think that is a major factor. There are simply many more TV shows today than there was in 1990 when The Simpsons first started. A lot more TV shows means it is much more difficult for any one of them to stand out head and shoulders above the rest.

There is no way Stranger Things has even half the popularity that The Simpsons has.

I mean, its not as popular as The Simpsons specifically, but I thought we were naming things that have been engrained into the pop culture, which it has.

nothing aired anywhere ever will, just like no album will ever sell as much as thriller, the times have changed and no 1 thing can be as popular as things have peaked in the past

The question was specifically about something becoming as famous as the Simpsons, which would be a tall order.

Its a lot like TV, shows dont perform (or in this case, viewed) and they get pulled. Only difference is Netflix relies on subscriptions to stay in business as opposed to free to air tv, so they have to keep the original content up. (ie - Stranger Things brought in 3.6 million new subs, when that goes, they'll need another hit)
