But it's the other driver's fault. Problem is, she didn't have insurance. So, the cop was saying that the money would have to come out of pocket. But gave me the info to get the police report. And I guess I'll have to either get the money from her to pay for it. Or pay for it to get fixed and get the money back. If she is willing(Which she seems to be), I can get a lawyer on base to write up a contract to get her to sign. If not, I'll have the police report soon and will have to take her to court, I guess. Adulting is hard.

Yep. Good luck getting any money from her without a judgment against her.

I figured. I mean, that's basically why I made sure the cops came so I can get the accident report and prove it was her. And she even told the cop exactly what happened and that she didn't have insurance. I'll still try to get it without court, but I figured court would most likely be the outcome...

Yeah. But I don't know if I have uninsured driver on my package or whatever...

I pay an extra $8/month for $3M coverage for uninsured motorists. I hope I never need it, but horror stories like this are why I sleep better paying for it. That sucks.

I'd make sure you don't trust her at all and get everything in writing. People will very often agree to everything at first then reneg later, no matter how nice they seem.

Yeah. That's why I was going to get something written up for them to sign. And then if also makes it easier in court, too. Like, I'm going to have the accident report, but if I got her to sign a contract and she tried to back out, I'd have plenty of evidence in court and it should go a lot better. I'm just glad she didn't drive off. Anyway, I still have to wait for the report. I got the paper with all the info on it. The police writes his report, send it's to somewhere else, and then I can get it. I think he said 3-10 business days. Or 7-10. Either way, I want to get that ASAP...

I hope she got a ticket and her car impounded for not having liability insurance. Unless you live in a state where you're not legally required. There's only a few.

Hope they impounded her stupid car. Liability insurance is so inexpensive. I hate people like her that drive around without it and now you have to do all this work to get her to pay. Even if you get a judgment against her if she doesn't have a lump sum to give you they'll have to garnish her dumb wages and you'll get fucking like $20 a month. Stupid bitch. Just get the fucking insurance like you're supposed to and be a useful member of society.

Anyone who praises the requirement for people to have car insurance is essentially just praising a tax on poor people. Actually, no. You're praising the idea of making someone totally helpless and possibly giving them jail-time due to the fact that they're poor.

#Morality

"You know how we can make people get car insurance!? Take their license so they can't work anymore!"

Americans, man. We're fucking dumb; we cry about injustices against people, then praise injustices when they benefit us. Yay!

That's not really the issue, the issue is insurance companies taking advantage of the mandatory nature to charge vast profit margins (or just plain old price people off the road).

Pretty much. The car insurance industry is certainly not without issues, but the fact of the matter is that **** happens on the road, and somebody's gotta pay for it. Mandating insurance ensures that everyone ends up contributing to that pot based on how likely they are to be pulling from it (ideally), so the money exists for the necessary repairs.

This
On top of that, if you leave someone injured and cant work anymore, insurance allows it not to ruin your own financial future as they cover your ass, instead of having to pay for that guys medical bills and even in some cases even paying part of their salary for the rest of their lives.

No one goes gets arrested or goes to jail for not having liability insurance. Don't make things up. Liability insurance is super inexpensive. You can find companies that provide it for $20 a month. And if you can't afford that then don't have a car. You're not entitled to drive around damaging people's cars and injuring them in accidents without being able to compensate them if it's your fault.

It's not a "poor person tax." That's ridiculous. The reason it likely became mandatory is situations like this where the offending party didn't have insurance but definitely couldn't pay and the party that sustained the damages needed to take on a burden that wasn't theirs to begin with. Driving a car on the road is a privilege not a right. You don't have the right to injure people and damage their cars with no consequence. I'd rather people have insurance than have them start having to go to jail because we don't have mandatory insurance.

You're in England and no one here knows what your driving record is. Also you could be talking about your entire insurance package for all we know. I don't believe anything you say because you're just a poster that likes to contradict everything.

Unless your driving record is absolute shit there's no way your liability coverage only in the US should be $150 a month.

That said, it's a whole lot more necessary in a lot of places than it ought to be, and public transit options should be expanded and improved to help people function without a car.

Sadly yes. With how many rural areas there are in the US it's extremely difficult to have good public transit options everywhere. I wish there was more funding for that but our taxes are too mismanaged.
