I average something like 4-5 hours most days, usually broken up between a long nap and an actual sleep. I find it's a lot harder to get up when I sleep longer. No matter what, it seems to take a while for me to fall asleep. I've occasionally averaged like 3 hours a day, though.

12 hours is not normal. Even the people in my grandma's nursing home don't sleep that much.

Uhh, anything less than 8 hours in unhealthy.

I used to only do 5. Getting the full 8 hours (or however long your body sleeps naturally) cuts your typical insanity in half.

I did that for 2 months. After switching back to 8 I see a massive improvement in my mood and attitude towards other people.

There's nothing wrong with being nuts if you like it, you know.

Not actually true by any stretch.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/expert-answers/how-many-hours-of-sleep-are-enough/faq-20057898

https://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/features/adult-sleep-needs-and-habits#1

"The amount of sleep needed to function the next day varies from individual to individual, and is determined genetically and hereditarily," says Chokoroverty, who is also a neuroscience professor at Seton Hall University's School of Health and Medical Sciences."

And some studies have suggested that the ideal amount of sleep for working-age adults is actually 6.5 hours, including ones which studied modern hunter-gatherer societies.

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/300962.php

Also keep in mind that over-sleeping is harmful so you aren't really erring on the side of caution with 8 hours any more than you err on the side of caution by taking extra medicine to treat an illness or by overeating.

I'm guessing that includes settling down as 6 hours = 4 REM cycles and waking up during a REM cycle causes difficulty getting up.

people only sleep 6 hours because they work so much

and hunter gatherers? are you kidding me? They took multiple naps a day they just chased their food for 4 hours a day and then had an off day maybe

so if you wake up at 6am to eat, you eat again at noon and then again when you come home, which gives you another 5-6 hours to go to sleep, you're supposed to have 12 hours between your last and your first meal basically

I don't I eat at like 9pm so I'm always over sleeping or going to sleep too early

https://sleepfoundation.org/press-release/national-sleep-foundation-recommends-new-sleep-times

Pretty interesting categorizing each sleep recommendation by age brackets based on new studies:

Newborns (0-3 months): Sleep range narrowed to 14-17 hours each day (previously it was 12-18)
Infants (4-11 months): Sleep range widened two hours to 12-15 hours (previously it was 14-15)
Toddlers (1-2 years): Sleep range widened by one hour to 11-14 hours (previously it was 12-14)
Preschoolers (3-5): Sleep range widened by one hour to 10-13 hours (previously it was 11-13)
School age children (6-13): Sleep range widened by one hour to 9-11 hours (previously it was 10-11)
Teenagers (14-17): Sleep range widened by one hour to 8-10 hours (previously it was 8.5-9.5)
Younger adults (18-25): Sleep range is 7-9 hours (new age category)
Adults (26-64): Sleep range did not change and remains 7-9 hours
Older adults (65+): Sleep range is 7-8 hours (new age category)

Also completely untrue for countless reasons, not the least of which is that hunter-gathers didn't actually spend that much time "chasing their food" because they tended to be more gatherers than hunters.

Citation needed

Cavemen slept in caves. WHOA!!! Who would have thunk that.

You can barricade the entrance to a cave to keep the predators out.

Even if some primal people did sleep outside, it's not like predators were a constant threat. Have you never gone camping in the woods before? Were you constantly attacked by bears and stuff? Sleeping outside isn't as dangerous as you think, otherwise there wouldn't be any modern day campers.
