{ 998th Place } [70's][ 166th Place]
Song: "Frankenstein"
Band: The Edgar Winter Group
Album: They Only Come Out At Night
---{ 1972 }---
Genre: Instrumental
Score:[8.2][6.2][0][5.2][3.3][3.1][10.1] = [36.1] = [5.157]
Video:

Write-Up:
Every time I hear this song I completely forget that it is an instrumental and I've heard it quite a bit because of Guitar Hero (Never cared for playing it though honestly). I really don't have a lot to say about it though other than that so let's see what kind of facts I can dig up... Ah here we go. Laughably the song only topped the charts for a single week before getting bumped by "My Love" from Paul McCartney. Interesting, the song takes it's title because originally during the band's jam sessions it was faaar longer than what was released. The band would often branch out during their jam sessions so in a live setting you got something a little different every time. When they finally released it on vinyl they handpicked all their best segments and put them together for the final version that we hear today. Edgar Winter actually played many of the instruments that you hear in the recording.

Write-Up:
Feels like the 2nd time... that I'm dropping a Foreigner song (because I am unbelievably). These guys have a lot of decent songs but when they make a hit, they really go all out. Unfortunately we haven't gotten to those songs yet so for now we'll dine on the tears of disappointed Foreigner fans that this song doesn't make much headway into the list. (Are there any Foreigner fans reading this topic?) Anyway, this is still a classic that many folks do enjoy I am sure. Btw ignore that "1978" tag on the video as it is clearly wrong since the album dropped in March of 1977. People should really do their research before tagging things tbh.

{ 996th Place } [70's][ 164th Place] @NBIceman
Song: "Astronomy"
Band: Blue Oyster Cult
Album: Secret Treaties
---{ 1974 }---

Write-Up:
First of all, I like this song but I am and was really disappointed that I made an "originals only" clause when making my list because of it. The best version of this song by Metallica imo would be faaaaaaaaaaaaar further up the list. In fact that is the version I'm listening to while I jot down this write-up since I prefer it more. The instrumentation is ok but I find Metallica's version to be more atmospheric which makes more sense to me given the song's theme. Unlike the recent Prince cover of When Doves Cry, they actually do this song a great service with their version. For the hell of it I'll give you a score for Metallica's version: [8.3][9.2][8.2][9.2][6.2][7.2][6.2] = [54.5] = [7.785] which would land it roughly around 532nd place on the list so you can see the difference.

Best Version IMO:

Band: Baltimora
Album: Living In The Background

Write-Up:
Hey would you look at that at long last 1985 decides to show itself.lol That means that every year selected for this ranking now has representation and what a place to start. This not only gives us stats to look at for each year but firmly places 1985 in the lead. I gotta say though that I really didn't consider this song Disco before this ranking. I kinda thought it was more New Wave but most of what I've looked up points it to the Disco genre. I remember this pretty darn well from my childhood. As a kid I was thrilled every time this popped up on the radio. It's got a cool (yet repetitive) beat and was always fun to sing the tarzan call imo. Sadly I kinda feel like it is a bit shorter than needed for full satisfaction. I don't think I've ever heard anything else from these guys so I'll confidently say they are among the greatest One-Hit Wonders from the 80's.

Video:

Write-Up:
Another tune from the 80's here but not one of my favorites. I honestly never really got much into Huey Luis and the News. I don't think I even had a single cassette in the hundreds that I owned growing up. It does remind me of when I used to search through the collection at my local pawn shop as a teenager back when I was collecting cassettes. There were almost always 15 to 20 from these guys but like I said I was never enticed into buying one. The sound of the 80's is pretty unmistakeable here but I really feel like this is more akin to movie background music in the 80's like maybe something you would always hear in films like Beverly Hills Cop and such. This unfortunately drops you down to just 3 nominations left Snake and your 80's selections are through.

Band: One Direction
Album: Made in the A.M.

Write-Up:
The 3rd appearance of One Direction here and they're getting better... yeah I just said that. Parts of this are kind of catchy but I don't feel like there is a bunch of substance here. You got a decent rhythm with a repetitive melody but after a few listens it loses it's entertainment value imo. Maybe it's just me or maybe I'm just biased towards boy bands of this decade but that is how I feel. I wouldn't really listen to this if it popped up on the radio though because even my kids would heckle me over it. I might have been a bit harsh on the vocals score but as I mentioned there isn't a ton of substance here and lyrically there isn't much to impress honestly. I can't remember if my wife selected this or not but I might have just pulled it from a list as filler for the 2010's I think.

{ 992nd Place } [00's][ 219th Place] @Great_Paul

Band: Avenged Sevenfold
Album: Avenged Sevenfold

Write-Up:
And unseating Metallica's Halo On Fire in the Heavy Metal genre we have a song from Avenged Sevenfold which is a band I once listened to. They are somewhat known for darker themes in their music and this tune is no exception as it might just be one of the darkest songs they've ever written. It's favored among fans of the band for sure but I can't exactly sing to this song with my wife or kids around know what I mean? The melody isn't too bad and is quite whimsical but I can't help but feel like the vocals are a bit amateur-ish as if they don't fit and do at the same time. An interesting nomination all the same.

Write-Up:
This song sounds like the oldest song in the entire ranking here to me. Obviously is isn't but it sounds like it should be from the late 60's/Debut of the 70's imo. It's a pretty popular and well known song almost everywhere I looked. I'm not the best Disco enthusiast but I can understand why it was such a bit hit. I can't say for sure if it's the Bee Gees most well known song but it is certainly way up there on the list. Folks got to hear this song for the first time when the ever so popular Saturday Night Fever was released which propelled John Travolta into stardom incidentally. Reportedly, Robert Stigwood (who was the Producer for both the Bee Gees and the Movie) even had the original name of the movie changed from "Saturday Night" to "Saturday Night Fever" due to the song.

Write-Up:
This doesn't really sound like something from this decade. It almost has an 80's vibe to it imo but maybe more 90's I guess. I'm a bit perplexed atm though because the scores here are higher than I think I originally intended yet lucky for the song I can't make it go any lower than it is here although if I were editing the previously ranked list this would fall a ways down I think. I must have not had my normal listening ear on when I completed the first scoring and unfortunately this somehow missed my 2nd wave of scrutiny. Oh well, it is what it is. It's an ok song but nothing fantastic really imo.

Write-Up:
My ex-girlfriend used to love this song and therefore I got to hear it incessantly once upon a time. I'm sort of impartial honestly but I've heard it so much that I kind of like to not like it. It is a decent Reggae outing and full of harmony so there isn't a lot to complain about really. The lyrical score is a bit low because of the redundancy in the lyrics but the vocals are fair although not spectacular to say the least. The song burned hot on the charts when it was released and it almost seemed to be a theme for the year 2000 when mainstream music moved to more melodic R & B and Post Grunge away from basic rock and alternative music imo. The abrupt ending is kind of annoying though... just sayin' cause it almost sounds like they didn't know how to fade out properly but whatever.lol

Write-Up:
Despite the obvious language barrier I actually kind of felt like I could understand this song through the music which was kind of cool. I don't know what the song is about but by watching the video I'm gonna say girls who play video games? (the pile of game accessories on the floor in the video is suspect plus yay for an appearance of the Game Boy hoo rah!) Anyway, pretty cool song for having never heard it before this ranking. The video has a weird tint to it almost as if it would be something to look at through 3d glasses or a VR camera. I haven't tried it but I just happened to notice as I was writing this up. Overall there is a nice relaxed chill vibe going on here and it's definitely not terrible. This unfortunately leaves you with just 1 more song left Simoun.

No, no, you had it at 80s. For it to sound like the 90s, Stan Bush would have had to change his musical style at all since the mid-80s and he hasn't. His biggest hits were his songs for the Transformers & Kickboxer films, The Touch and Never Surrender respectively, that he just...kinda seems to still be doing the same thing.

Which is comforting, in its own way! It's nice to know that there's someone still out there making cheesy 80s montage songs and you always know what you're going to get when you play a Stan Bush song: Something inspiring, with lyrics so vague you can apply them to any hero or group. You're going to break the chains of whatever and defeat whoever, woo!

Not to say I dislike the song, but it was a last minute addition when I couldn't find anything else & I'm as surprised as you are that it made it even half as far as it did.

Ooh our first Aerosmith tune to falter. Not exactly the best example of their work imo so I'm quite fine with this placement. I once had the opportuntiy to go see these guys in my state but I turned it down for an ex-girlfriend that had no interest in the band... stupid b**** robbed me of the experience more like it and then she dumped me anyway. It was a time when I spent too much time with my friends I guess and she couldn't handle it or something. I was also working a bunch but you know she never had any trouble spending my money though.lol Anyway, I'm not hardcore enough of a fan to really praise much of the bands stuff from the 70's. Oh god. Everytime I hear this song all I can think about is an episode of King of Queens where Doug and Carrie take a vacation to an apple orchid with their best friends Deacon and Kelly who are right next door and have no trouble with their romance apparently as everytime they get down to business they play this song and it can be heard through the walls. It's quite the funny episode as it puts extra pressure on Doug who takes it to heart and has trouble performing for Carrie especially with the timing of this song lol. Anyway, I am reminded of this because of how annoying it actually gets by the end of the episode. It's a decent romance tune for many folks but it is way out in left field for anything that could boost my arousal. Um... not that anyone here needs to know that. >_>

The beat is ok but only scores as high as it did from it's recognizability. I don't hate ABBA but this is definitely not one of the songs I would even mention when listing their songs If asked anyway. >_>

Write-Up:
This song is one of the first songs that I ever actually learned to play on the guitar. I can't play it as fast as the song requires but it's still recognizable. It actually has a similar picking pattern as Outside by Staind which is kinda neat and probably the reason I was able to actually learn it. As for the song as a whole.. it's kinda sappy and not all that exciting tbh. What I can't figure out is how this song became the bands only Top 10 charting hit when there are definitely a couple other songs of theirs that are better imo. Oh hey that's interesting... apparently Kerry Livgren who wrote the song only did so as a picking excercise while learning to play guitar. The whole song is a message about mortality and the eventual death of us all so it's sort of dark I guess and according to what I'm reading the theme was inspired by some passages in the bible (Genesis 3:19 and Ecclesiastes 3:20 for anyone interested in that.)

Ouch! I'm not 100% sure if there is anywhere else in this ranking where 2 songs from the same band fall back to back on their respective decade's list (actually I went back to look and totally forgot that I kicked the ranking off with a double whammy for Neil Cicierega). Anyway, the last one to drop for these guys was Snakes nomination of "Hip to be square". I like this song a bit better because I find it catchier overall even though it still isn't my cup of tea outside of 80's nostalgia. I unfortunately don't have a lot else to say here either.

So um... we are all just gonna keep this ranking between us ok. No one better say a word to my wife who selected it for the ranking. She loves Ed Sheeran and would cut me if she knew I was dropping one of his songs so low on the list.lol I don't mind some of his other tunes but this one just doesn't quite jive with my interests though. Poetically of course I can't argue with the lyrics as Ed is decent about how he writes his music. However... why does he have to write so many romance songs. It'd be nice to see him come outside of that box of relationship insecurities because he could really make some decent tunes imo if they all weren't so sad and lonely.

Write-Up:
We have finally come to what I think was the last exception made for the ranking. In this case I allowed the song onto the list bending the "must be on an album" rule slightly because it is set to release on the bands next album (which may or may not be coming out soon) but should most definitely release as it is the 3rd in the series of albums produced by the band. Raetsel could probably tell us more specifically about that as she was the one who nominated the song and is the biggest fan of The Protomen that I know here. The tune is supposedly sung in character by Roll and Dr. Light from Mega Man but I'm not exactly sure how all of the bands tunes are supposed to be represented other than themed with Mega Man stuff. It sounds similar to something Meat Loaf would come up with but that could just be the Rock Opera piece I'm comparing to.

Write-Up:
I really dig the beat and harmonics in this tune and the narration of the story instead of singing of song is a different listen than I was expecting. I think I was most disappointed at how abruptly the song ends tbh though. I'm guessing it is a lesser known song of the Gorillaz based on the favorability score here since I really didn't find it mentioned in too many places and it barely charted wherever I did actually find it listed. I kind of thought it was Dennis Quaid narrating the story at first since the voice is similar and sounds better in my head. The actual story is interesting as well and can be interpreted a couple ways I think. To me it's about the destruction of life by way of greed but that might be simpler than it actually is imo. Not a bad tune for the most part though.

Hey another new genre and probably the only song to be in it I think (I haven't checked ahead yet but I don't recall there being another tune like this). The video enhances this tune immensely imo and this is a pretty solid sample of stringed instrumentation tbh. I love the theatrical take on the music and it is almost a character in itself especially with the performance provided. I added the artist here to my list of bands to check out. (Crystalize was pretty decent right off the bat). Anyway, it's a bummer that so many points are lost for unfamiliarity and the fact that it has no lyrical substance. A decent listen all the same though.

Time to take a dump on an iconic classic... or to put it bluntly, I hate this stupid song. Yeah I get that it was popular and kickstarted Michael Jackson's rise to fame but it's just so blah to my ears. I'm not sure if that is straight bias or if it's the redundant chorus or what but it just doesn't jive with my interests at all. Despite my disinterest in the song it did smash the charts holding #1 for several weeks if I recall. What happened to the rest of the Jackson 5 anyway? Just kidding. I don't care.

Wow I had almost forgotten that this song ever existed... until I realized that I'm actually not 100% sure it's what I thought it was. It has a familiar sound but after listening to the whole song I don't think it's one that I've ever heard all the way through. Maybe I heard it in the background at some point in my life on a radio that I walked past or something. Unfortunately it didn't stir my memory enough to claim solid familiarity. I read through the lyrics and it has a mediocre message but nothing of any significance to me personally. It did ok on the charts but didn't bust any list or anything like that. This drops you to 2 remaining nominations though Mycro.

So basically it would have gotten a 6.05 if you had just left the lyrical category out entirely and averaged the other 6 categories. How many songs would that put it ahead of, out of curiosity?

Let me check on that...

Edit: Hmm, it wouldn't be that much further up the list coming in at around 886th - 890th

Am I supposed to understand why this is funny?

That is the best description of the genre that I found in the amount of time I spent looking it up.

Keep in mind that I don't list the genre of the Band/Artist. I tried to narrow down the genre for each song individually.

So... I first started to realize that I might be aging when I really took an interest in a dude called Billy Joel and his music. Yeah. I kinda like most of his stuff believe it or not. There is a bunch that I wouldn't say is top tier but I always find it easy to listen to. The first of his tunes to actually make the list though is a mild one at best. I think the biggest sell for me is the Piano play that fills out the majority of his work. Ordinarily as well, the lyrics are well written and always tell a story of true life experience. I am excited that we'll see more of his work further up the list but I am cautious of looking foolish over bloating an uncommon interest and exposing an ever aging psyche.lol But who knows... maybe there are more fans here and my interest isn't so uncommon at all. We'll see. :P
