65. Your Name
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/5/87048l.jpg
@PrinceKaro

Im not quite sure why this became the ultra-megahit it did. I mean, obviously I liked it, since Im ranking it this high, but its not even my favorite Makoto Shinkai anime (Garden of Words and Voyage to A Distant Star are both much better). I do highly enjoy the body-swapping gimmick. The first half of the movie is all sorts of fun with the antics that both characters get up to. Honestly, I wouldve been cool if the whole movie was this sort of thing. You could make a whole anime with fun stuff like this (I really enjoyed the first arc of Kokoro Connect, too). The twist is cool too. It gives everything a deeper meaning, and couldve led to some pretty great drama. I didnt think the drama was bad, honestly. It just wasnt particularly amazing. Probably the weakest thing was the ending. Having them lose their memories was stupid. Honestly, this is pretty much always a stupid plot element in anime (and other works of fiction). Memory loss is dumb except maybe when its immediately reversed. Having them meet again at the end kind of helped a little, but that didnt really do it for me. Blah.

Also, wtf was up with all the insert songs? None of them were good and there were a lot. I dont get it.

Yeah this is pretty much my thoughts on Your Name. I can sort of see why it's so popular because it is sort of...easily digestible, if that makes sense? Also I do think the characterization in the movie is fantastic, which is a good way to get people invested.

I've said this before (like, every time I've talked about the movie), but I do agree that the beginning of the movie is much better than the end. The drama was somewhat good I guess, but I really enjoyed the body-swapping stuff at the beginning.

I also like Garden of Words better, which is definitely my favorite Shinkai movie. Didn't care much for Voices of a Distant Star actually though. And then, I guess to round out all the Shinkai movies I've seen, I also watched 5 Centimeters per Second but pretty much hated it.

I don't get where this idea comes from. Of Shinkai's four features before Your Name, none of them are the kind of story that ends with a couple getting together except for the one where that happens. I don't like to say that people watch stuff "wrong", but I really don't get how so many people watch 5 Centimeters and/or Garden of Words and think "That was clearly an amazingly romantic story, so why does Shinkai have to block the obvious happy ending for no reason?"

64. Gungrave
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/11/75724l.jpg
@MartinFF7

Now heres a blast from the past. I feel like nobody really talks about it anymore, but back in the day it was constantly recommended and it seemed to be a favorite for most of the people who watched it (so long as they skipped the first episode, which exists for some reason). I feel like I have a bit of an opposite relationship with this show compared to most people. A common opinion Ive heard is that the show gets much worse in the later episodes, when it switches from a down to earth mafia show to a supernatural revenge adventure. For me, however, Im not really a fan of mafia stories in general. All those classic mob movies are pretty lame IMO. 91 Days and Gangsta were shit. I still like early Gungrave, just not enough for it to be this high on its own. The relationship between Brandon as the hit man and Henry as the brains makes the series work so well, and the stakes basically just get higher with every arc that passes. I dont remember any of the other characters in the show, honestly, so I assume they werent very good compared to the main two. There was a lot of action in the show in general; it just wasnt that good until the final arc. The final arc is where things get great, refocusing on the relationship between Henry and Brandon while also making everything more of the top and introducing much more entertaining action scenes. I can understand why youd find it silly if you wanted to watch a realistic crime show, but I basically never want to watch a realistic crime show, and the transition worked quite well for me. Felt like each arc was building on and getting bigger than the last, which is an anime style I enjoy quite a lot.

63. Azumanga Daioh
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/1/66l.jpg
@Shonen_Bat

This show would probably fall a bit on a rewatch, but Ill probably never watch it again, so it gets to retain its fond nostalgia. I went and read the manga a couple years back, which I enjoyed rather more than the anime (superior pacing, emotional scenes are better), but I definitely enjoyed Azumanga when I watched it, so that didnt really affect its ranking. Anyway, its a pretty good show! The whole cast is pretty funny, and theres a great variety of characters. Chiyo was probably my favorite (genius characters are usually my thing), since she was both funny and enjoyable as a serious character. Sakaki is both cool and moe, Osaka is hilarious basically all the time, Kagura is full of high energy fun, etc. They dont feel like theyre just copies of other characters either, which is nice. Azumanga does have the advantage of coming out before a lot of copycat series, but I dont think thats all there is to it. Azumas a plain talented writer, whos good at coming up with original stuff and writes awesome characters in general. Yotsuba is my favorite manga, so itd be nice if that could get a good anime someday too. Anyway, Azumangas main weakness is that it can be inconsistent at times. Each episode is basically made up of five mini episodes, and not all of them are great. Some are hilarious, most are good, and some just arent funny. I wouldnt place it in the top class of anime comedies or anything. Regardless, its good stuff, if not as good as the manga.

the show cuts a lot of corners in terms of production values. there's lots of padding which can mess with the comedic timing and tons of re-used frames and animation loops. visuals aren't the most important thing in a comedy but it's still jarring to see.

I also remember thinking the manga was pretty funny but the clips I've seen from the anime have been pretty hit or miss for me.

I liked Azumanga Daioh. It's not like the funniest anime ever in terms of pure comedy, but I do think it nails feel-good nostalgic school life in a way that most other similar shows don't. I don't know why this one in particular struck a chord with me, but I remember thinking episode 19 was a top tier anime episode for reasons related to that.

Also by the way I ship Yomi x Tomo super hard just saying

62. Land of the Lustrous
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/3/88293l.jpg
@Pyresword

So the most significant thing about LotL (IMO, anyways) is the animation. There are certainly a few CGI series that I enjoy (Kemono Friends, Arpeggio of Blue Steel, and Knights of Sidonia are all great IMO), but all of them would look better with good traditional 2D animation. Except thats not quite all there is to it, as LotL proves. You can actually be a CGI series and have good animation too! It just takes time and effort, which CGI is typically used to save, so it doesnt happen that often. The action scenes in this are awesome, and the regular scenes usually look nice too. Hopefully this is a sign for the future of CGI anime, though Im not super optimistic about that, since we do still get bad CGI all the time. Other than the animation, the show is pretty good in general. It starts out really slow, but around the hibernation part it starts to get pretty great. Phosphophyllite becomes a very compelling protagonist, and most of the rest of the cast is fairly solid too (other than Rutile, who sucks). Diamond is excellent, Antarcticite is cool, and Bort is fun with her Diamond interactions. The minor characters who only show up for a minute or two all feel like they have unique traits that make them interesting as well. The main issue with the show, other than the slow start, is how random everything feels. Theres kind of an overall plot, but almost every episode is also almost totally disconnected from the others. The progression has a very strange feel to it. Cinnabar also gets way too little screentime, considering how important it seemed like shed be at first. And Im not at all a fan of the villains. The Lunarians behavior constantly changes for no apparent reason, and theyre basically never interesting. Still, good characters is most of what it takes to make a good show, so this was a good watch. Might have to check out the manga someday.

61. Great Teacher Onizuka
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/13/11460l.jpg
@LordoftheMorons

This is another of those examples where I read the manga after the anime (the other way around is pretty uncommon for me, and I dont think it applies to anything on this list) and found the former to be a rather superior experience. I did, of course, enjoy the show when I watched it (hence its high-ish ranking), but the last three episodes sucked and the execution generally wasnt quite on the level as the mangas (plus I love the arc after the anime ends). Anyway, lets talk about the good parts. Onizuka is an awesome protagonist. Basically what you think all the teacher side characters in anime actually should be like actually stopping bullying and not letting the students get up to ridiculous antics. Hes a young guy himself, so he still relates to them pretty well, and actually seems to agree with them on a lot of the things they get up to, and helps them such a way that it actually has a lasting impact. Feels kinda like the ideal teacher for a class like this (except for the education part, of course). Basically all the students are excellent characters too. A ton of them go through real development as the series progresses, and most of them have likable quirks and problems. The most villainous ones (who are major characters) are among the best, since its cool to have them (temporarily) defeat Onizuka, and eventually become good guys. Naturally, the highlight is Urumi, who I like even more than Onizuka. Her schemes are the best, shes not as mean-spirited as some of them, her intelligence is awesome, and once shes a good guy shes the coolest of the lot. A lot of the plans to fix the other students end up coming from her as well. Its also fun how she ships herself with Onizuka, though the author doesnt seem to want him to end up in a real romance for whatever reason. Anyway, the series is just plain great, all in all. Read the manga instead if you can, but the anime is very good too.

Normally this wouldve been a show I watched, but I actually read the manga years before the anime was released! And I wasnt that into it, so I was never particularly interested in watching the anime. The story and characters were solid, just not anything remarkable. Sometimes I wonder if the anime did something to make it vastly superior, but honestly Im not that interested in finding out.

Oh huh, is this a complete adaptation? I dont think I ever realized that before. Anyway, this is another one where I read the manga. It started out pretty cool, with the main character having the awesome power of being able to change trash into trees. This led to a lot of creativity, but unfortunately, as authors are wont to do, he got more powers later and the fights became a lot less interesting. I think some of the later villains were lame too? Like Robert, IIRC? I cant remember super well. Still a solid series, but not one I loved.

https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/1/2432l.jpg
@GavsEvans123

I feel like this might've been one of the first non-Ghibli anime movies I watched? Possibly even the first, period? Regardless, it was a long time ago, so my memory of it isn't that clear. I do certainly remember it being good though! The time leap premise is a ton of fun, and it's cool how it's all used to accomplish something so trivial. Basically anything with time travel appeals to me, so that's a big plus for the movie. Plus Makoto is a great, likable MC. I feel like I didn't like the more serious parts at the end quite as much (I think there was some guy affiliated with the time bureau or whatever who was lame...?), but the whole thing was definitely a lot of fun. I can't remember many of the specifics, just Makoto doing silly things and some great animation throughout. Honestly, I think it maybe deserves to be higher, I'm just not quite sure how much the later stuff actually hurt it for me. This would be something cool to rewatch someday, maybe with a non-anime fan, since I can see it appealing to pretty much everyone.

59. Yuri!! on Ice
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/6/81149l.jpg
Kateee

I can still recall the disappointment when I discovered this wasnt going to be a series about lesbian skaters. The series was announced without any details as to what it was about, so a lot of people figured it might be that sort of yuri, before the official reveal arrived. Thankfully, it was still a damn good show! Basically every aspect is excellent. The cast is very good, without getting too bloated like some sports shows seem to. Victor and Yuri make for an excellent pair of core protagonists. Yuri 2 is not so great, but the side cast is cool as well, so hes mostly not that big a deal. Both of them have great individual development, and their relationship with each other is the highlight of the show. The story progress is very well done, with each episode having something interesting going on and also further developing the overall plot. The music is probably one of the things that elevate the show I didnt realize until later that all the songs they use are original. They feel like something that would be used in a real skating routine. And the animation is fantastic as well. The skating routines look ultra good, for the most part. Might have to say its the best-looking sports show out there, though Haikyuus pretty close. There were two main things that annoyed me, unfortunately. First, the last episode is bad. The animations bad, everythings rushed, the relationship stuff doesnt work, etc. Feels like a crappy ending. Second, the show is irritatingly non-commital with Yuri and Victors relationship. They say they love each other, they kiss, they exchange engagement rings, etc., but the show still acts like maybe they arent dating and they never kiss on screen for some reason. This is the sort of thing that annoys me with yuri teasing too, but their relationship was such a huge part of the show that it felt more pronounced here. Maybe the sequel will go further? Or maybe the OVA already did? I never watched the OVA, so I dunno whats in it.

Not asked for but now that we've had 4 episodes of FLCL Alternative I suppose I can give an update. Good show. I said Progressive's problem was that it lacked its own identity and tried too hard to be the original while seemingly being written by people who didn't get the original. Alternative doesn't have this problem. It's a lot more grounded and manages to feel more in the style of the original without blatantly trying to copy it.

I guess it could trainwreck itself in the final two episodes, but I'd be surprised after such a strong start.

58. Dragon Ball Z
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/6/20936l.jpg
@Anagram

So, I have three things to base this writeup on, which will probably make it unrepresentative of my true thoughts on the series, but I dont even know what those are. First, I watched the series as it aired as a kid, up until the end of the Frieza saga. There were lots of repeats and sometimes it was difficult to figure out when new episodes would air, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. Second, I watched Dragon Ball Kai a few years back, after it finished (but not the Buu saga part). I enjoyed this quite a bit too! Even here I was noticing how slow the pace would be sometimes, but obviously it wasnt as bad as with the original anime. Third, I read the Dragon Ball manga in its entirety just a few months back. This was a lot of fun too! Honestly, I think it was the best of the lot. The pacing is great, and the art is always very good. This is the only place I experienced the Buu saga, which is a good thing or the series would probably be ranked quite a bit lower.

The show does a lot of things well in general. The cast is cool, the fights are neat with constant escalation (until Cell at least, who doesnt really escalate anything past Frieza levels), the story facilitates everything that happens really well, etc. The whole show is just tons of fun, for the most part. Lets just go over the arcs, since those basically affect my overall opinion of the show. First, the Saiyan Saga is awesome. Raditz is a great short-term villain, Vegeta is amazing, Goku training in the afterlife is awesome, King Kai rules, the pacing is quick, and the fights are super cool. We get to learn the truth of Gokus tail, Gohan gets some neat content, and all the story bits are good. This is peak Dragon Ball. Frieza is basically just as good, ignoring the stretched out fights in the original DBZ anime. Frieza actually feels more powerful than Vegeta, the transformations are cool, we get Vegeta as both ally and enemy (he kills a lot of innocent people here!), and the fights are all great. This is just as good as, or better than the Saiyan Saga. Cell is where the series starts having issues. I actually love all the Android stuff. Theres a lot of cool character development in the non-fighting scenes. Future Trunks was always my favorite character in the series (a Saiyan with a freaking sword!), and his episode where he goes back to the future and punks the Androids is one of my favorites. The Androids themselves are totally unique villains with very different personalities. They arent necessarily all about conquering the world or whatever like some previous villains, and its neat to see all the stuff unfold with them being more powerful than in Trunkss timeline. Unfortunately, Cell comes along and ruins everything. Hes kinda interesting when hes trying to absorb the Androids. He has an interesting goal there, and throws a bit of a wrench into everyones plans (I still dont think hes great there though). After that, what even is Cell? He has no real interesting motivations, and no personality. Hes not really any more of a threat than Frieza (Frieza was going to destroy the world, and now Cell is going todestroy the world). I dont think the fights here are very interesting either. Buu has all the problems of Cell but is even worse. His personality is terrible. The mix of comedy and seriousness mostly does not work at all. The non-Buu parts of the arc can be great (especially the father/son bonding scenes with Goku and Gohan. Those were fantastic). I liked the early parts of the arc too. Great Saiyaman was just the right amount of silliness, and the tournament couldve been amazing. But no, Buu has to go and interrupt it. Blah. Anyway, the best parts of the series are amazing. Its just too bad about the stuff that comes after.

If you're ever interested in Dragon Ball Super the pacing is a lot better than Z. (half the arcs are 13 eps one is 30 and one is about 60 which is admittedly very long)

There's definitley way more villain motivations beyond just "lol im gonna destroy the world"

I also always liked the Great Saiyaman and it sucks how much hate he got when it first aired. Adult Gohan in general is great

Yeah, it's never really made clear, but it's in part from the writer and in part from the production committee, I guess? I get the feeling they're testing the water in case there's backlash. But obviously the fans - both hardcore and casual - are more supportive of the Victuuri relationship than anything, so there's hope for S2.

57. Fist of the North Star

@GavsEvans123

I put this next to DBZ on purpose, unlike the other shows that have things in common and just happen to be next to each other. Its far more consistently good (though Ive heard bad things about FotNS too) and the anime just feels better as an adaptation, though I havent read the manga to compare. Kenshiro is an amazing protagonist. He has a great sympathetic backstory, hes easy to cheer on, and hes a total badass. Hes almost too good, except that he does lose against major villains and fails to accomplish most of his major goals for most of the series. Most importantly, Hokuto Shinken is just super awesome and seeing all the enemies explode is hilarious. Makes all the fights good, even the ones against mooks. The show starts off pretty episodic, and while that does get old after a while, its still fun seeing Kenshiro destroy everyone. The story, once it starts, is all great stuff. Kenshiros brothers are all great characters, and I especially love Tokis story. He gets to do the most badass stuff in the series (which is very impressive considering who his costars are) and generally has the most emotional parts too. Raoh is great as the main antagonist and manages to feel like a real threat. The show succeeds in almost every way, with just a couple flaws. First, the pacing can be pretty slow. Not quite on the level of the original DBZ, but a step down from the original manga, Im sure. Second, the animation is not very good. I mean, old stuff in general didnt have the best animation, but this takes quite a few shortcuts, and a lot of the fights are minimally animated. Would be cool to see this get a full budget remake, though Im sure thatll never happen. Anyway, would definitely recommend it to all the shounen fighting fans out there! Or check out the manga if thats your thing, Im sure its great too.

56. Steins;Gate 0
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/1375/93521l.jpg
@Handsomeboy2012

Oh dear, I ranked this before I finished the series, and it probably belongs a few spots lower. I actually played the VN a while ago, and found the anime to be a superior adaptation. The pacing is really good, theres not as much time spent on Okabe being depressed, theres a bunch of Amadeus scenes added, the pacing is better, etc. The art and animation are actually better than the first SG anime (while the SG0 VN has worse art than the SG VN, IMO), and everything seemed to be executed well in general. That was for the first half. In the second half, it runs into the issue that the VN was totally non-linear and had a bunch of different routes, but the true route incorporates elements from a bunch of them, so the anime had to try and adapt all of those. These series gets a bit less interesting for a while, unfortunately, though it picks back up at the end (the ending itself was really well done).

As for my opinions about the story itself: its pretty good! It has a lot of the stuff that made the original SG great, a very interesting story, and Okabe getting over his depression and such is great. I like Maho quite a bit, though the other new characters arent quite as high quality as she is. There are some good emotional moments, the humor is solid, and all the characters go through some cool development. Im glad the SG0 didnt shortchange Daru like the original did, since hes a lot of fun here, especially in his serious moments. Overall, its not quite as good as the original Steins;Gate, but its about as much as I could hope for from a sequel. It doesnt feel like its just some cheap cash grab. Im not sure whether Id recommend the VN or the anime more, but if you love SG, SG0 is definitely worth getting into!

Daru was really great in Steins;Gate 0 tbh. I am also a huge fan of Maho.

I agree about it not being as good as the original, but personally I still consider S;G 0 a top tier anime in it's own right

Sub is fine, I'm used to those voices from the VNs and I watched the original anime subbed too. I know the dub is apparently very solid but I've never heard it!

55. Ergo Proxy
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/11/6259l.jpg
@MartinFF7

Ergo Proxys a bit of an odd duck. I was pretty interested in it back when I started anime and found out about studios and the work theyd done. EP was from Manglobe, whose previous anime, Samurai Champloo, I enjoyed a lot (I believe these were their only two series at the time). I did hear mixed reviews, but after the first few episode, I was firmly on the all-time classic side. They have an incredible atmosphere, tell a great story with fantastic animation, and have a great protagonist in Re-l. Unfortunately thats not how the whole series goes. It turns pretty much completely episodic after that until the last few episodes, and the quality is mixed. Some of those episodes are still great (though I dont know if any are as good as the early episodes), but some are pretty weak. Champloo did the episodic thing much better than EP did (Casshern Sins, which I watched later, has a similar setting and much better episodic storytelling as well). Still, its a good show overall. I ended up not being a huge fan of Manglobes other original series either, incidentally, and even their adaptations had issues. Still sad to see them dead, but I suppose it was time.

54. Oni Chichi
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/8/24239l.jpg
@BK_Sheikah00

And so we finally have the top ranked hentai on the list. Im not quite sure if Id say its my favorite hentai ever, but its up there, and it totally blows away everything else that was nominated. Im not quite sure what it is that makes the series so amazing, but its super sexy and good to watch. The animation is consistently quite good, as far as hentai goes. The dad is kind of an asshole character, but there are many worse guys than him out there. Marinas solid as the nice heroine, and has sexy scenes. Airis the best as the tsundere heroine though. Probably tops among hentai anime tsunderes. The shows always great when shes on-screen, and her love/hate relationship with the MC is portrayed very entertainingly (in terms of sexiness, I mean). I actually havent watched all of them (jeez they made a lot), but all the ones I did watch were quite good. The ones where Airi sleeps with other guys are good too. Makes her tsundere in all sorts of different ways. Oni Chichi 2 wasnt quite as good, but I did still like it, and its a different series so Im not really counting it here. Anyway, yeah. To me, Oni Chichi is pretty much the paragon of well made modern hentai. Good times.

53. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/5/66083l.jpg
@Raka

I know some people consider this to be one of the greatest comedy anime ever, and while it does have some elements on that level, I dont like it *quite* that much. The main thing it has going for it is the cast. Nozaki himself is a pretty excellent main character, since all the things he does are pretty funny and its great how out of sync with the rest of the world he is. Chiyo is fun as the perspective character, just quirky enough to be quite funny herself. Seo is the highlight of the cast. Shes basically just a huge asshole to everyone, and its always hilarious, especially since the things she insults them for are things the audience was probably already thinking themselves. Wakamatsu works pretty well as the target of her bullying, though he doesnt do much on her own. The rest of the cast is where the cracks start to appear for me though. I think Mikoshiba is the most popular character, and while I do like the joke about him being the base for the girl in Nozakis manga, I dont like him very much on his own. Id also say Kashimas quite good as a character, except that shes stuck having Hori around, and hes fucking awful. Basically ruins every scene that hes in. He just feels like an abusive stalker more than anything, especially since Kashimas antics are generally harmless. Bleh. Anyway, other than him, its a very funny show! Maybe Ill read the manga someday.

I approve of this writeup. Seo the best.

I also didn't like Nozaki-kun as much as the rest of the anime community does, though it was pretty solid imo. Reminded of School Rumble a bit, except I think I probably liked that show better. (School Rumble is one of my favorite comedies though so that's not surprising.)

52. Watamote
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/12/51619l.jpg
@Robazoid

Watamotes another of the select few shows where I read the manga before watching the anime. The anime actually does a pretty good job, for the most part. Theres some cool experimental animation going on, and it feels like the director cares about it a lot. The animation in general is limited though, and I feel like the slower pacing hurts it. As for the content of the series itself: its great! Tomoko is an awesome protagonist, funny both to laugh at and to cheer for (I find her relatable in some ways, which might say something about me). The rest of the cast is fairly minor, but theyre all entertaining in their own ways, especially former best friend Yuu. But really, its the Tomoko show, which is a good thing. Other than that, I dont really have much to say about it, other than that if you liked the show, you should definitely read the manga too. The post-anime content is still great, though less mean-spirited than it was before. If we get animated emoji girl someday Ill be very happy.
