25. Legend of the Galactic Heroes
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/13/13225l.jpg
@Anagram

Its kind of insane that this anime even exists. A full 110 episode adaptation of a lengthy sci-fi novel series. It even got a bunch of bonus series filling in the backstory of the characters! Some of those are very good as well. Theres some excellent Reinhard backstory in there. And the series itself is excellent as well, of course. I love epic sci-fi like this, and the series managed to keep things going in a really interesting way. It was cool how both of the main characters were basically in the right in terms of what they were fighting for, and how they were equally matched in most ways. The cast in general is awesome - there are a couple stinkers in there, particularly on the Alliance side (Julian sucks and the Rosenritter was kinda silly in how invincible they were), but most of them are great. Reuenthal and Reinhard were my two favorites overall. They had an awesome mix to them of being badass and also super intelligent. Reuenthal benefits from being one of the only serious Wakamoto characters out there, and makes me wish we got more, because his performance is just amazing. Although its an epic sci-fi series, the cast is the main thing that makes the show great. I love all the rivalries they have and they ways they develop over the course of the show. Unfortunately, sometimes the characters make dumb decisions just for the sake of the shows plot. I dont think what Reuenthal did in his arc near the end made much sense, for example, but that arc was awesome enough that I can mostly forgive the show for it.

The battles and everything are cool too. More in the battle of wits sense than as action spectacles, but the animation works, and battle of wits is one of my favorite genres of anime (no one nominated Code Geass or Death Note). The plot itself has its ups and downs. The show does feel a little dragged out and repetitive sometimes, since it really needs to prevent one side from permanently winning the war. But it manages to have great parts right up until the end, regardless. I dunno if well ever get something like this again (Space Brothers is the closest I can think of), but I hope we do, because it was a tremendous accomplishment.

24. A Silent Voice
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/10/80797l.jpg
@Pyresword

This probably isnt quite as good as the manga in general. A lot of stuff is abbreviated, and a great deal of the character development is stripped out. Honestly, it really should be a few spots lower here, I think, but it has one special thing that makes it stand out. The beginning arc is very good, just as it was in the manga. Again, its abbreviated a bit, but its still presented well. The characters are good, and the animation is great for the whole thing. I definitely appreciate the way they did the sign language. Unfortunately, some of the middle parts of the movie are a bit meandering in a way, since theyre stripped of a bit of the meaning the manga gave them. Mainly, I just really love the ending. Something about the way it was presented was incredibly emotional. I cried a lot when I watched it. It was an incredibly beautiful scene, and while Im not sure it makes the most sense for the movie to end there from a plot perspective, it definitely gives it way more impact. Absolutely incredible moment.

23. Girls' Last Tour
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/5/88238l.jpg
@Robazoid

Oddly enough, GLTs a show I was really hyped for before it came out, and I was disappointed in it at first. Im a real big fan of slice of life shows that have some sort of fantasy or sci-fi twist to them, and this seemed like a perfect fit. But I just didnt find the first couple episodes very interesting. I also found Yuuri to be a bit more mean-spirited that I wouldve liked. Thankfully, the show greatly improves in basically every respect as it goes along. Yuuris terribleness becomes a lot funnier, and the episodes get much more interesting. I think practically every episode from 6 or so on was amazing. The two mains have a pretty great dynamic between them, where Yuuri will do stupid things to get them involved in entertaining situations while Chito keeps them alive and pushes the story forward. Those stories vary in quality (there are some hits early on among the less exciting episodes), but the cast basically makes them good regardless once you come to like them. The art of the show is surprisingly good for a show that looks like, well, this, particularly the architecture. The abandoned city looks fantastic, totally unique from most any other post-apocalyptic series (mightve been a bit influenced by Blade Runner or Coruscant I guess, but it still has its own unique feel). By the end of the show, I was a big fan of it all, and definitely cried a few times.

Would also like to talk about the manga for this one, since I read it later. For the most part, I think the manga and anime are pretty much equal. There are a couple parts that are better in the anime (the rain segment and the final episode, which tried for a much more climactic feel in the anime, due to being the final episode and all), but the manga has its superior interpretations as well. The biggest difference is just whats covered. I mentioned earlier that the anime basically got better as it went along, and that continues to be true in the manga. The anime covers 28/42 of the mangas chapters (I think it skips a couple of those, but whatever), and does a great job of it. However, those last 14 chapters are among the mangas best. Some of them are total stunners, and I cried a few times. The last couple chapters were incredible and blew me away even more than anything in the anime. Itd be great if they made another anime to cover whats left at some point, but until then, all fans of the anime owe it to themselves to check out the remaining parts of the manga. Those chapters were enough to make it one of my favorite manga period.

https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/3/18872l.jpg
@xp1337

Hmm, I feel like I dont have much to say about BL for some reason. Its one of those cool mainstream feeling anime, which has a lot of stuff that would appeal to the casual crowd, but in a good way. The cast is great, particularly Revy, and the format of the show with all the little arcs works very well. The animation is pretty good, the action is fun, and the stories are all interesting. The show manages to keep a good sense of humor despite being fairly dark (ROTTON THA WIZARD too good). The twins arc was maybe my favorite part of the main series? The Roberta OVAs were pretty awesome too, and made me wish that we kept getting more. Not sure whats up with the author. He draws a decent amount of hentai still, and he made ReCreators (which was great), so I dunno why BLs on hiatus so much. Anyway, its just a plain really good action show with some great depth to it. Check it out if you havent seen it. It should appeal to pretty much everyone (who isnt against lots of swearing and violence and such <_<).

@Raka_Putra

My favorite thing from Satoshi Kon. He has some other great stuff too (Im a big fan of Paprika and Paranoia Agent), but I think this is better in terms of emotional impact. Unfortunately its one of the first movies I watched after I got into anime, but so it goes. The trip of the MC through all the movies shes been in is really effective, with pretty much all of her characters being either people you can easily connect with or characters who do cool stuff. Its a pretty fun idea for a movie, with the characters all being real, and not as cynical as you might expect from a similar idea done by hollywood or whatever. The animation is excellent as well, and there are some cool tracks that get you into the moment. Not much more to say about it since again, I dont remember much of it, but oh well.

20. Gunbuster
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/11/20857l.jpg
@tazzyboyishere

I got fairly interested in checking out more Gainax stuff after the greatness of TTGL and Eva, and Gunbuster was the natural first step. It was fairly disappointing at first, though. The first episode really shows its age (the show started in 1988), and its not super interesting in general. Thankfully, the show basically dramatically improves in quality in every single episode. The cast doesnt feel like anything special at first. Its kind of a weird mix between sports show characters and shoujo-esque romance and hot-blooded shounen antics. But thankfully, pretty much everyone gets more hot-blooded as time goes on, even the more shoujo-style characters. The first episode is basically entirely on Earth, then the cast goes into space, and I think that we dont even get to see Gunbuster in action until episode 4. The character development before this is solid and good at setting things up, but ep 4 is basically where the show gets awesome. The scale increases in every episode, starting with small-scale battles before getting up to like, galaxy-level combat (I think, cant remember exactly how the final battle worked). It also gets more science-y as it goes, with a lot of focus on time dilation. The main character, Noriko, has kind of a little sister relationship with the other MC, Kazumi, but because Gunbuster travels at near light speeds so much, Noriko stays the same age as Kazumi gets older, and oddly enough, the dynamic kind of reverses because of this. Noriko basically reminds Kazumi of all the passion that she lost as she got older, and takes charge.

The final episode is basically the entire reason this series is so high on this list. Its by far my favorite episode of any anime ever, and made me cry more than anything Ive seen (despite not being explicitly sad, really). The final battles done in a striking black and white format, and the scale of it is unmatched in most other mecha anime. Has a lot of excellent hot-blooded emotion, and feels like perfect payoff to the series. Noriko and Kazumis relationship pays off for all the drama they had earlier on, too. The episode uses a lot more of the time dilation stuff from earlier on as well, leading to the best ending of anything Ive seen. Feels really, really good. The sequel, Diebuster, shows the ending from a different perspective, and even though I knew it was coming, it still felt pretty emotional there too. So yeah, check Gunbuster out if youre a fan of TTGL or hot-blooded action or mechs or whatever. Its only 6 episodes, and while it starts slow, it builds up to something truly special. Dont watch the (bad) movie version though.

19. Hunter x Hunter 2011
@Raka_Putra
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/4/49303l.jpg

Of all the series in my top 20, Id probably say HxH is the most inconsistent (which was also true of the original version). Some arcs are amazing, and the show has the best shounen arc ever, but some arcs are pretty mediocre and slow. Unfortunately, one of those slow arcs is the first one. Theres interesting stuff here and there, and its definitely better than the originals rendition of the arc (which I find to be true of all the arcs other than Greed Island), but its far from amazing. The series really gets good when it introduces Nen in the Heavens Arena arc. I love magic systems in general, and HxHs is no exception. All the stuff they can do with Nen is super cool, and I love how detailed everything is. The series really nerds out on all the details of everything to an extent that no other shounen really comes close to, I think? Made me feel like I was reading Wheel of Time or a Brandon Sanderson book or something. Real good shit.

Im not as big a fan of York New as a lot of people are, but I liked it quite a bit more in the 2011 version for whatever reason. Melody is great, Kurapika is great, and it feels like a great transition from the world of children to the adult world. The Spiders Im not as into. Some of them are alright, but a lot of them are kinda boring, especially the leader. Greed Island was my favorite arc in the 99 version, and while its not quite as excellent here, its still very good. Togashi, not content with Nen, gives us ANOTHER awesomely complicated magic system, and back in 99, the idea of traveling to a video game world was rather novel and awesome (and its still done much better here than a lot of modern series that have attempted to do the same). The stakes are a neat mix between low and high, where nothing is real but people are still dying all the time. Anyway, 99 ended after GI, and with that alone, the series would still have a decent ranking, but itd be a good 20 to 30 spots lower.

The real greatness of the show is all about Chimera Ant (if the series were just Chimera Ant, itd be a good ten spots higher, or more). CAs definitely the best arc in any shounen ever written, and I dont think its particularly close. First, I wanna talk about the first half of the arc. A lot of people dont like this part so much, but I loved it. Theres this incredible sense of dread permeating everything that happens. The series kinda feels like a mix between a shounen and horror, which is fairly unique, and its executed perfectly. The Ants feels like an incredible new menace. The way they slowly grow in power while the world fails to take them down before they grow too strong to be defeated feels real good. Pitou feels incredibly threatening as a villain when she arrives (much more so than Meruem, though he eventually becomes good for other reasons). The start of the invasion is probably the weakest part of the arc. The stuff thats happening is all super great, but the pacing is really slow. Wish they couldve sped this stuff up. Fortunately it gets awesome against with the best battle in the series ( https://i.ytimg.com/vi/6Vhp65bgKOo/maxresdefault.jpg this fucking guy), and some awesome emotional stuff care of Komugi. I wasnt into Gon vs. Pitou tho. Felt like a cheap cop out to me. Really glad it seems like hell permanently be missing his Nen at least. I cried at the end of the arc. So good.

I like the Election arc more in retrospect than I did when I was watching it, knowing how everything turns out. Thought Gon would get the easy way out, so Im glad he didnt. Alluka and Nanika are awesome characters. The election itself was pretty cool too. Solid finale to the series.

As for the general elements of the series, most of them are quite good. The music wasnt that great early on, but it gets much better in the second half. The animation ranges from competent to great. The cast is pretty cool in general. Gons a delightfully sociopathic main character, while Killuas a delightful assassin with a heart of gold. Kurapikas insanity is great too. I really like that the main three characters are basically totally crazy. Im not as big a fan of Leorio, but he has his moments and he gets the least screentime, so thats okay. The individual arc characters can be excellent too. Biscuit and Netero are super awesome.

Overall, its my favorite shounen out there. I hope the manga finishes someday, but if not, the anime had a very satisfying ending IMO.

Chimera Ant is so good. I love mostly the whole thing for different reasons. Though, I do agree on Gon vs Pitou feeling like a pretty stupid fight. I wouldn't say it's a cop out in the sense of "Gon shouldn't be this strong", since the ability to do that is more or less established within the Nen system. I more think it's a copout in the sense of "these power level spikes are just dumb and not interesting to watch".

Alluka fucking sucks though. Most likely one of my least favorite characters from any anime, though I did grow a bit less upset when I was told that her character ties into things that happen later on in the manga after the anime ends.

Hey, one in the top 20! That's pretty good, and HxH 2011 is definitely deserving.

Chimera Ant is really great...I'm mindblown by how Togashi ended it. In general, HxH plays around with shonen conventions a lot and I think that's what makes the series stands above the rest.

18. One Outs
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/manga/3/169329l.jpg
@TexWolf_1729

Battle of wits anime was basically my favorite genre of anime back in the day, and I craved anything that even resembled that premise. When One Outs came out, I hadnt watched any sports anime, since Im not really interested in sports in general, but this show proved to me that you dont have to like a sport to love an anime about that sport. The shows about a pitcher who isnt a tremendous athlete or anything. He only knows two pitches. But hes so good at psyching out the batter that he can almost always throw a pitch they arent expecting and strike them out anyway. All the techniques he uses are pretty entertaining, and its great seeing him wreck the enemies, whether theyre villainous athletes or good guys. One of the highlights is when he goes up against a team that cheats a ton, and decides to cheat himself to beat them. The things he does are all ridiculously entertaining, and hell do stuff like throwing the ball to purposely injure the batter at times too.

The other thing that makes the show fun is that the more runs he gives up, the less he gets paid, so the team manager schemes against him too. Its basically one super genius up against the world, and the series is constantly entertaining because of that. The stuff in the manga after the anime is very good too, but I felt like the anime made things flow a little better, and I kinda like the shorter games better than the longer ones (the games get longer as the series goes on). Anyway, Tokuchi Toua is one of the all-time great protagonists IMO. He doesnt have much depth to him, but hes super entertaining. Right up there with Light, Lelouch, and Akagi in that sense.

17. Parasyte
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/5/73085l.jpg
@MysticBrohan

I read the manga for this back in the day, many years before the anime came out, but I forgot most of it by the time I watched the show. Which is a good thing, since the anime was great, even better than the manga! Shinichis relationship with Migi is amazing from start to finish. The relationship the two of them have is generally hilarious, but the serious parts are good too, of course. The rest of the cast is mostly quite good too, other than Shinichis love interest who can get annoying at times, but its Migi who steals the show. Ryoko Tamiya was probably my second favorite. She has a lot of depth to her, and also does super badass stuff. Great combination. There are lots of cool little things in the show that make it great. Itll have little side stories about other parasites across Japan, and theyre extremely well-written in general too. The action scenes are awesome, and the whole show is paced tightly. My number one favorite thing about the show, however, is the music. There are some amazing tracks in here. It has one of my favorite anime soundtracks of all time, honestly. Feels modern in a good way and the music gets a lot of focus. Cream Soda is my favorite track:

The last episodes are, unfortunately, a little weak, but theyre not bad or anything, and there are still great parts. Fantastic little piece of entertainment all in all.

16. Fate/Zero

@xp1337

I like Fate/stuff quite a bit. I read the F/SN VN as it came out, starting with the Fate route, before UBW was even TLd. I read the Prisma Illya manga, watched the show, play the mobile game, read the first Fate/Zero book, played Hollow Ataraxia, etc. But Id consider the Zero anime to be the most consistently great Fate/work (well, until the HF movie trilogy finishes, at least). Some others might have slightly higher highs, but the others have some lows too, which Zero doesnt, IMO. Lets start with the cast. Not everyone is likable, but every character is extremely interesting. Ryuunosuke and Gilles mightve been my favorite pair - I love it when an anime can make villains fun and entertaining - but the others are all compelling in their own way, too. They develop throughout the series, and their final scenes all show just how much theyve grown. Fan favorite pair Waver/Iskandar has a lot of fun scenes too, and their last scenes are some of the best in the show. A lot of people like to focus on how dark the show is, but its emotional and funny a lot of the time, too.

One cool thing about the show is that the story is basically just a vehicle for character development. Some external things happen, but theyre all incredibly character driven. Lots of episodes just have the characters talking most of the time, and it works incredibly well. Of course, the other thing F/Z is known for is the action/animation, which it has in spades. Its not quite on the level of the best scenes from the UBW anime, but to make up for that, it has some really interesting battles as well. Things never really go the way you predict them to, and the battles arent just shows of power vs. power. The way Kiritsugu fights is extremely unique, and the way it makes everyone else hate him so much is fantastic. The big brawl at the docks from episode 6 with Lancelot vs. Gilgamesh is unforgettable, and the rest of the fights are awesome too. Loved seeing a mage (Kayneth) finally do something really unique and impressive. The one part of the series I wasnt really into was Kiritsugus flashback episodes (particularly the first, the second was solid), since hes probably my least favorite character of the bunch, but I know a lot of people who loved them, so Im not going to begrudge the anime for having them. I also really liked that the ending of the anime managed to be so effective despite it being stuff I already knew from F/SN. Amazing that they managed to make such a great prequel.

F/Z so good. Kiritsugu is great. Gil v Rider is my favorite fight in the show even though it's not really a fight - but that's kinda the point. Really that whole episode is great, Waver and Gil's conversation post-fight also great.

15. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/7/6770l.jpg
@Reg

Nanohas a bit of a strange one to talk about, since theres so much to it. Ill be including StrikerS in this, but not the later spinoffs, which feel only tangentially related to the franchise. Nanoha Vivid wasnt that great anyways, and Vivid Strike was worse. Other than that, though, the series is generally very good! I dunno, theres something about it I just love. A lot of people say that it doesnt get great until As, but I actually loved it from the first series (which I like a bit more than As, though I love both of them). Nanohas an excellent protagonist. Shes not super out there in most ways, but she really cares about making friends, and shes happy to do so by beating the shit out of them. Her relationship with Fate is awesome here and in the future. I like that theyre basically married with a kid by the time StrikerS comes around, though itd be nice if they were willing to make that more explicit (its still about as explicit as it gets).

The main thing As has over the original is the villains. Fate was a great villain in the original, but her mother wasnt really the best. Basically all the villains in As are awesome. Hayates in a great position, and the rest are cool too. Cool to have a girl in a wheelchair. The twists and turns with how theyre not actually evil are very neat. The main thing I didnt like as much about this one is just that it has less Nanoha, I think (I gave both series 10s on MAL, so its not like I dont like it). Nanohas by far my favorite character in her franchise, so the more of her the better. Thats why its a shame the spinoffs focus on other characters.

Ditto StrikerS. Nanoha is basically at her best here, despite being an adult. Whenever shes around, you know awesome will occur. Unfortunately, the show adds a couple new characters who arent particularly exciting, though they arent bad either. StrikerSs main flaws are just some stupid decisions they made. For whatever reason, the main characters have limiters put on them by the government because theyre too powerful, so they job to the bad guys a lot early on. It just feels bad. The villains are also by far the lamest of the franchise. But StrikerS still has its great parts. All the stuff with Vivio is fun, and once the limiters come off, it has the most badass action in the franchise. Adult Nanoha in the last couple episodes is really freaking awesome.

The franchise in general is great for action. Some people deride series like this or Gundam for being all about beamspam, but I love laser beams. Beams are super cool, and Nanoha knows it. All the beam fights are super fun. The other fights are good too, but the beams are what Im here for.

Lastly Ill talk about the movies a bit. Theyre fantastic. The basically remake the first two series with faster pacing and better animation, and it totally works. I wouldnt necessarily say theyre better, since I love the originals a lot, including the slower parts that were cut for the movies, but I gave the first two movies 10s as well, and theyre perfectly reasonable substitutes for watching the series. Reflections I dont remember quite as well despite watching it more recently, but it was mostly good, if a bit slow until the climax, which was awesome. I still havent watched the new movie yet, but Im quite interested in checking it out soon. Hopefully itll be a great finale!

Fate/Zero is such a well-polished anime. Really solid the whole way through.

There is one small thing in it that always bothered me quite a bit though (despite loving it overall): having multiple women be choked to death always struck me as a kind of gross decision
