I watched Rahxephon recently with no expectations at all and it was ok, absurdly pretentious but ok. The "best" part was reading the explanations afterwards; apparently I was supposed to get all that crap through subtle hints in the series, yeah fat chance.

The anime I won't watch will just get brief writeups every few posts. Here's a few at once.

Amakano
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/4/82482l.jpg
@NowItsAngeTime

From MAL: Tags: *Vanilla (10/10) . And this is a 2016 anime! Doesn't even have the excuse of being old to get me to watch it back when selection was more limited, and I don't watch much hentai anymore.

Angel Blade

Kateee (why don't you want @s?)

I...might have actually watched this back in the day? The plot sounds vaguely familiar. I don't remember anything about it that, and I don't keep track of the hentai I watch the same way I do regular anime. It kind of all blurs together. Anyway, this actually sounds kind of good, but eh. I'd probably remember it better if it actually was.

Arslan Senki
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/6/73588l.jpg
Kateee

Slow pacing is one of my big pet peeves with a lot of anime. And I've heard a lot of bad things about this anime's pacing. The premise is pretty interesting at least. I've just heard too many bad things about it for it to really grab me.

Belladonna of Sadness
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/11/24740l.jpg
@xeybozn

A hentai from 1973 huh. Im not even sure Ive watched any normal anime that are that old. Ive watched some artsy hentai (Another Lady Innocent comes to mind) but it didnt really do it for me. I dont think Ive ever watched a hentai for the story.

Captain Tsubasa
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/9/26248l.jpg
@Handsomeboy2012

Long sports series are often a miss for me, mainly due to pacing reasons. Even something like Ace of Diamond felt way too stretched out. Im also not that big of a fan of classic anime in general.

Chicchana Yukitsukai Sugar
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/11/17101l.jpg
@UF8

Sorry UF8, but I will not be watching Snow Fairy Sugar. I do like a good number of magical girl series (alas, no one nominated any Precures), but this just feels like a random early 2000s shows with nothing really stand-out going for it. I have a few friends on MAL who watched it and all of them gave it 5/10s

Chihayafuru
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/3/35749l.jpg
@Pyresword

Oops, I lied. I said this would be about shows Ill never watch, but Ill very likely watch Chihayafuru at some point...assuming it finishes and I dont read the manga. I shouldve probably watched it already, honestly. It looks and sounds really good. Of course, it could pull a March Lion on me, but I think Ive heard nothing but praise for Chihayafuru, so my expectations are pretty high.

Chie the Brat
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/4/77065l.jpg
@xeybozn

Ive seen a few Takahata movies, but I didnt like any of them. There have been a few features celebrating his accomplishments since he died recently. I dont think he really deserves any of the acclaim he got though. The synopsis for this sounds quite unappealing too.

DAYS
@Reg

More random sports series. Nothing about this appeals to me in the slightest. I guess the blonde in the picture is kinda cute. Meh.

For example, I got 3 out before the top 100 so that's 3 times the FeelsBadMan

100. Outlaw Star
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/4/16737l.jpg
@NBIceman

When I first got into anime, there were three classic casual 90s anime that everyone hailed as being really good. After being disappointed by Cowboy Bebop...I was also disappointed by Trigun and Outlaw Star. OS was probably the least popular of the three, but I dunno if Id say its much worse than the others. Theyre all pretty much equally mediocre in my eyes. I remember OS much more poorly though, so maybe it actually was worse? It had that mix of episodic and serialized episodes, so the quality had a lot of ups and downs. I think I remember the episodes based on Hilda being pretty good, so I was sad she wasnt around more. I didnt really care that much for the rest of the cast, and the action wasnt particularly exciting either. I do vaguely recall that the last few episodes where the story came into sharper focus were kinda bad. Therell definitely be a few shows on the list where I dont remember them very well, unfortunately. Sorry NBIceman.

Seki-kun was the first "real" anime I watched, for want of a better way of putting it, (besides things like Pokemon and Yugioh when I was younger and didn't distinguish between western animation and anime) so it gets a few points for that, but it's definitely one to watch in small doses. You can blame this video for me nominating Kill Me Baby.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp-77t8sHFA" data-time="

I'm watching that series now because someone in the comments said Kill Me Baby was their favourite anime ever and this is how they found out about it, and I agree with you that there is wasted potential here. The show rarely does anything with the premise of Sonia being an assassin, instead going for slice-of-life slapstick which could have been done in any other series. The episode with the impostors is my favourite one so far, because it actually makes use of the show's premise in a funny way. I also feel like the episodes are too long and disjointed, and that it would have been better off taking a page out of Seki-kun's book and having each episode be 5-10 minutes long, focusing on one or two sketches instead of going off on multiple tangents in the space of one episode. That'll teach me for taking anime recommendations from Youtube comments. I now regret not nominating Nigeria's Got Talent instead. That kid has some serious swagger in his dance moves.

Baka and Test is the first of my nominations so far that I actually really like, so it's a shame that you didn't enjoy it. Hopefully my remaining two noms will hang in there at least a little bit longer.

99. Wolf's Rain
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/6/26968l.jpg
@NBIceman
BONES has a bit of a reputation for making anime that starts out strong and falls apart towards the end. Wolfs Rain is no exception, except this time I wasnt super duper into the early stuff either. The four werewolves getting together and fighting for survival is kinda cool, and theres good animation and interesting episodes, but I wasnt a huge fan of the cast or the story. A lot of people complain about a certain major issue with the series: there are four recap episodes in a row after the first 12 episodes, which is ridiculous and stupid. However, I just skipped those episodes so it wasnt a big deal to me. Anyway, most of my writeup for this is pretty vague since I dont remember it very well, other than the ending being stupid (something about environmentalism and saving the world and reincarnation? I dunno).

98. Trigun
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/7/20310l.jpg
@NBIceman

This is another series that really messes up when it starts focusing on the main story. I generally prefer shows to have serialized storylines rather than just being episodic, but a bad episodic story just means one bad episode, while a bad story arc can ruin an entire show (or half a show, in this case). The shows pretty fun in the first half, with a bunch of silly characters. None of them make all that much sense, but thats okay, because everything thats happening is ridiculous and over the top. Characters that were cool and important early on get sidelined in favor of boring villains who only stay around for an episode or two before theyre replaced by the new villain in the evil organization. It sucks. A lot of people have said that the manga handles the story stuff better, and that may be true, but the mangas art is also some of the worst Ive ever seen. Not in the sense that its ugly or lacking in detail. Its just completely incomprehensible whenever theres action going on. I can honestly say the manga wouldve been better with no action at all, which is really sad for a series based almost entirely on fighting.

Sorry to eliminate three of your series in a row Iceman it was completely unintentional (I ranked the series from an alphabetized list - didn't even check who nominated them when I ranked them!).

97. Toshi Densetsu series
https://puu.sh/Bjrhh/cc9c2c4bc3.jpg
@NowItsAngeTime

AKA Urban Legend series. The gimmick for this is pretty fun, since its a hentai where all the girls are based on urban legends. Most of them are played relatively straight, but theres a fun one where Sadako comes out and makes a sex tape with you and uses it to ruin your life which is a neat twist. The first episode is the only one I actually liked though, unfortunately. The rest are a bit more generic. I do appreciate that its kinda loli-tastic, but eh, vanilla with lolis is still vanilla. Oh wells.

Honestly, this probably shouldnt be this high, though I do have some solid nostalgia for it. It was one of those shows Id watch before school in the morning, or after coming home in the afternoon, and it was definitely the first anime I ever saw an episode of. I definitely didnt even come close to watching all of the episodes, but I do remember it being pretty fun to watch. Having everything go fast was pretty different from all the ordinary cartoons I saw back then, and it was always fun. Plus its the only anime I can think of that actually had a worthwhile live action adaptation (the visuals at least, the rest of it had issues), which is neat. I dunno if itd be worth going back to, but I definitely have some solid nostalgia for it.

95. Sora no Woto
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/3/21108l.jpg
@FL81

Before SnW aired, it felt like itd be a series that was right up my alley. I quite like cute girls doing cute things slice of life series, especially if they have some sort of twist that makes them a bit different from just ordinary life. The idea of a military group made up of cute girls seemed pretty fun to me. Unfortunately the execution is pretty poor. None of the girls are very interesting. Honestly, I dont remember a single one of them, other than maybe one who played the trumpet (that wasnt all of them, was it?). Rather than integrating war and slice of life, which wouldve been cool, the series is basically split into two distinct sections. I think the first 9 or so episodes are just standard slice of life anime antics (but on a military base). Theyre...fine, just underwhelming. Then the last few episodes are all about death, destruction, and the realities of war. These shouldve hit hard, but it was all pretty trite. Nothing we havent seen many times before. The impact was light because of how little time it got, too. I feel like they shouldve had this sort of thing sprinkled throughout the series. Going into battle every other episode or whatever, and changing gradually over the course of the series. The series isnt bad, and some of it is pretty solid, but it shouldve been something really special.

Fun fact: the show came out one year before Madoka, and both of them have cool EDs from Kalafina. Madoka knew how to handle traumatized girls a lot better than SnW did though...

94. Shoujo Ramune
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/9/84422l.jpg
@BK_Sheikah00

And BKs first series falls. Say what you will about nominating all hentai, at least the series that BK nominated were pretty solid! I was actually somewhat interested in Shoujo Ramune because I played some of the VNs from the dev who made it. Those were quite a bit more interesting though, with more entertaining/creepier protagonists, and better girls too IMO. Their first two games both have one sadist girl and one masochist girl, which is a good combination for this sort of thing. Their second game, Mei Shoujo, does a really effective job at making you feel like a horrible pedophile, which is novel I guess? Anyway, Shoujo Ramune is a lot more vanilla. I like that it has a fairly lengthy yuri scene at least. The rest of its scenes are okay but yeah.

Two in a row for BK sorry man. The first couple episodes of this are actually pretty good, partly since they focus on the tsundere girls, and tsunderes rule in hentai (the previous entries have been sadly lacking in tsunderes). Unfortunately the rest are basically terrible. They ruin basically everything with the kuudere, and the loli boss is barely in there for some reason. This is one of those where I played the game before watching the anime, so that hurt it too. I feel like everything is more vanilla in hentai anime adaptations of the original, honestly.

92. Wolf Children
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/9/35721l.jpg
@PrinceKaro

Warning, some spoilers in this writeup.

The full title is something more like Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki, which basically sums up my opinion on the show. The first part of the movie, with the mom and the wolf is pretty solid stuff. Sad, but good. Though it did feel kinda awkward to me in some ways too, like they hit it off with each other better than they should have, or that the wolfman didnt have as much personality as he couldve. Still, its more of a prologue than anything, and its effective. The rest of the movie focuses on the mom and her kids. The stuff with the mom is pretty solid, learning how to raise werewolf children. It didnt quite do it for me, since Im not a huge fan of stuff that extols the glories of country living, but eh. The real issue is the kids, namely Ame. I basically hate Ame, and have never liked characters like him much. His desire to return to nature basically makes him feel like an ungrateful piece of shit after all the effort his mom went to in raising him. Yuki deciding to be purely human was kinda silly too, though at least that was a little more sympathetic and she was a more likable character in general. I think I wouldve liked it more if at least one of them had found a balance between living as a wolf and living as a human - like their dad seemed to have done. Definitely a disappointment from the man who made Summer Wars and The Girl Who Leapt through Time.

91. Cromartie High School
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/3/13390l.jpg
@TexWolf_1729

This was actually one of the earliest anime I watched, since everyone raved about it as the funniest comedy ever. Obviously, I disagree, though at least the opening scene is really good. Pencil eating is hilarious. I dunno, something about it just didnt really click with me. The timing is off or something. The jokes are delivered a lot more slowly than they should be, so they dont live up to their potential comedy-wise. What I learned after is that the jokes actually are funny in their manga incarnation, at least. The manga version of Cromartie is way better than the anime. Theres a lot of good stuff that was left out, and the delivery of the jokes is much better. I had to take breaks when I read it because I was laughing too hard. It does have some stuff thats pretty weird (theres a ten chapter arc when theyre stuck in the sewers fighting aliens), but theres just so much greatness. I feel like a lot of comedy manga are hurt by the animes slower pacing. Sometimes they can take advantage of the format quite well (Kyoanis pretty good at changing things up from the manga) but often they arent. The Cromartie did do one great thing at least Mechazawas voice. Usually when they talk about someones voice being amazing in a manga the anime cant really live up to it, but Wakamoto goes way beyond anything you couldve hoped for after reading the manga.

90. Mankitsu Happening
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/3/71063l.jpg
@BK_Sheikah00

And so we get to a hentai that I would actually say is legit good! The premise of it is a little silly (the main guy is afraid of women because whenever hes around one he accidentally ends up having sex with her). I think this was released in two parts of two episodes each or something, since each pair kinda has its own plot. Theres a pretty good selection of girls here. Girl 1 basically sucks - generic childhood friend with generic scenes, and the main reason this isnt higher. Girl 2 is his coworker whos basically emotionless but obsessed with having sex with him and shes great. Girl 3 is a kinda tsundere idol who doesnt really need to be an idol but her scenes are good. Girl 4 is neat in that shes obsessed with kuudere girl and hates the MC, and actually manages not to have sex with him somehow. It wouldve been great if she did because again, tsunderes in hentai rule, but she made me respect the integrity of the hentai called Mankitsu Happening. Good variety of girls and pretty hot scenes for something thats relatively vanilla.

Unlike Hunter x Hunter, Im not really a fan of YYH. I dont find the cast to be that great, and some of the arcs are not really all that compelling. I did quite enjoy the first arc. It felt fairly unique, with all the nifty ghost stuff, and introducing all the characters was good. Yusuke was a solid protagonist, Kuwabara isokay as the dumb friend, Hiei is great as the violent cool guy, and Kurama is also great as the less violent cool guy. Hiei and Kurama were my two favorites, so any episode focusing on them was basically guaranteed to be good. Wasnt a huge fan of the Dark Tournament unfortunately. Felt like it went on way too long. 40 episodes is a lot for a tournament arc. At least we had Genkai do some cool stuff there. Chapter Black was my least favorite part of the show. I was basically checked out for most of this arc, and barely remember anything about it. I do vaguely remember Sensui being a lame villain. Villains were kinda a failing of the show in general. And while I know its not that popular, I actually liked the Three Kings arc a lot. No Kuwabara was cool, and the stakes were totally different from any of the other arcs. Felt like a neat change of pace. So yeah, there were some good things about the series, but it didnt click with me in the way my favorite battle shounen do. At least Togashi managed to put his skills to better use later.

I actually watched some of the hentai ranked here, but knew nothing about the plot until now because I always skipped straight to the sex parts

I mostly skip through the plot too. No idea what Shoujo Ramune was about, for example.

The main thing I remember about YYH is that I watched it when I was fourteen, but Cartoon Network kept rerunning the first like two arcs because it always got to this one episode, promised more, and started over.

88. Planetes

I know a lot of people are super into the premise of Planetes, but it never appealed to me that much. I like my sci-fi to be over the top and awesome. When I hear people complaining about too much Jedi in Star Wars, or saying they want to see more ordinary people, I dont really get it. Thankfully, Planetes is a pretty well written series, so it manages to be decently enjoyable regardless. The team is a pretty good mix of personalities. The more experienced workers are all pretty great, and Ai makes for a cool protagonist. Seeing her grow and get better throughout the series wouldve been pretty great, I think. Sadly, thats not what the series is about. The show switches gears to focus on Hachi, who is by far the worst character in the show. Not only is he a huge asshole to everyone for no reason, hes incredibly boring. Nothing about him is particularly unique or interesting. The second half of the show does have the advantage of shifting to focus on the Jupiter mission, which is rather more interesting than garbage collection, but I couldnt really cheer for Hachi during this part since hes a piece of garbage himself. I checked out the manga for this one too, since Id heard it was pretty different, but it was actually a fairly faithful adaptation. The manga has a lot more weird no-dialogue sequences about the nature of space, which didnt really add anything to the series, so not adapting those is hardly a failing of the anime.

Is there more than one Planetes manga or something? The one I read was very different from the anime, but most people seem to agree that the anime is a very faithful adaptation. I've even seen comparisons between the two talk about how the manga handled plotlines that I'm sure were anime-only. Am I just crazy?

Ehh, depends how you're defining "very different". There were definitely anime original episodes, and there are certainly chapters with content that isn't covered by the anime, but the differences were quite small overall. Very different would be more like Fullmetal Alchemist, where the second half of the anime is completely original and most of the manga isn't even adapted.

87. Free!

And so the first KyoAni show on this list falls. Actually, Im not sure if very many of their shows even got nominated, so that might not be particularly significant. Free is essentially a silly fanservice show, but for women instead of men. Thankfully, its from KyoAni, so its pretty entertaining anyway, even to guys. Plus the animations really good, which always makes things better the fanservice actually looks good instead of cheap. The storys all about forming a swim club and sports and such, though that doesnt get a whole ton of focus. Its more about the relationships between the characters and them finding friendship again, especially those who were friends long ago and became estranged. These relationships are all fun stuff. The core cast is pretty likable, other than Nagisa who is a loser. Harukas actually my favorite of the bunch. I know some people dont like him that much because hes too emotionless and too obsessed with swimming freestyle, but I kinda like the emotionless type, and its always fun to see someone go their own way with no care for what everyone else expects. Rin was a bit more annoying than I usually like my tsunderes, but at least his shark teeth were awesome. Ive definitely seen worse all-dude shows aimed at women than this, so I do applaud it for its competence, even if it never really got great.
