Free was also surprisingly good to me

Kinda felt like the KON for women but more focus on getting good/drama as opposed to the KONers acting like lazy dumbasses the whole time

Not a top tier slice of life but Free was enjoyable and people were stupid to make comments about how KyoAni sucks just cuz they were appealing to a different crowd when I think its good they went a slightly different direction

86. Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
@tazzyboyishere
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/2/52681l.jpg

Nadia is a series that was, oddly enough, cursed by success. It was originally slated to be a show in the 24-26 episode range, but because it was so popular, the network ordered another 13 episodes to be made. However, the team that made it didnt really have the resources to make another 13 episodes, so those were all outsourced, and theyre...really bad. Thankfully, I watched this in the age of the Internet, so I just skipped those episodes with no ill effects. The rest of the show is pretty good! The quality still varies from time to time, but Nadia herself is pretty cool, and the rest of the cast is alright too. It does still have a lot of meandering episodes that dont go anywhere, as old long shows are wont to do. The most memorable episodes to me are the ones just after the block of filler - the team seems to have taken the extra 13 weeks to make them extremely stylish and cool. It feels like those episodes were made 10 years later or something. Its probably the worst original Gainax anime, but thats not a particularly bad title to hold.

85. Tamashii Insert
@NowItsAngeTime

Of all the hentai that was nominated, this is basically the only one where the plot is what makes it enjoyable. I mean, it doesnt really have much of a plot, but its fun. Basically its about a guy who gets the power to insert his soul into girls bodies and become them. Basically he uses this power to masturbate and have a bunch of crazy sex, which is all good. It keeps his monologue the whole time which is cool too because thats what makes these things fun. Usually in hentai where the guy gets turned into a girl or whatever, he hates it and then kinda ends up being forced to enjoy it. Here, because hes the one who make the choice every time, it has a much different feel. Kinda dirtier in a way. Amusingly, when he uses his powers, his soul remains in his own body too (its copied or something I guess) so we even get parts where he has sex with himself, and the final girl he inserts into has a fun twist to her. The actual sex scenes themselves werent particularly special, but context is what makes this one so good. All the scenes are extra hot due to the gender bender twist.

84. Little Busters: Refrain
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/7/48895l.jpg
@FL81

Another entry where the anime is much worse than the VN. While the LB VN as a whole has some major issues (all the non-Rin routes are bad), it also has great parts, and Refrain covers those great parts. Unfortunately, the adaptation is just...ok. Some of the more emotional scenes dont get covered as much as I wouldve liked, and everything kinda just lacks that power it had in the VN version of these events. Plus the VN version takes advantage of the VN format to make everything make more sense, while the anime cant really do that to the same extent. It still covers some great content, and I did enjoy my time with it overall. But if itd been as good as the VN version, itd be a lot higher on my list.

83. Girls und Panzer
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/9/40969l.jpg
@swordz9

Girls und Panzer was a series that I shouldve liked more than I did. Basically everything about it is extremely well done. There good progress from the start to the end. Every character is well constructed. The idea of tank combat as a sport girls across the world play with each other is awesome, and its executed perfectly. The battles are quite well animated and are compelling. Theres a huge variety of characters, all of which have interesting quirks. To me, it had just one major flaw that held it back: I didnt care about the characters. I liked basically everyone, but I didnt think any stood out, and none of them got enough screentime to really develop. The overall cast has like 50 important characters, and even the main school has like a dozen characters for whatever reason. With such a huge cast I had trouble even remembering characters names, let alone getting attached to them. Of course, its even worse with the enemy teams, since theyre only around for a couple episode and they have a bunch of characters of their own. If you compare it to something like Kurokos Basketball, that has smaller teams, and it constantly brings old teams back to develop them further. It spends a lot more episodes on the games too, so even the minor characters from enemy teams have time to develop. GuP does benefit from being fast-paced and constantly exciting due to the short episode count, but that doesnt mean as much when you dont really feel anything about the characters involved.

Yeah, the characters being poorly developed was what held GuP back for me too (I thought it was good, not great). Of the main five girls, I can hardly remember anything about two of them. Only the one who knew a lot about tanks really stood out for me

Something like High School Fleet, which wasn't exactly similar but did have a military focus and a similar number of characters, did a way better job communicating their quirks and relationships, I thought.

I liked the side routes in Little Busters :(

In particular I really enjoyed Haruka's route almost as much as Refrain even.

Definitely agree on the anime being worse than the VN though on nearly all fronts. In general the side routes suffered more than the main story I think, but yeah.

Though, there is one important scene (the baseball game during the rain in Rin 2) that I actually liked more in the anime than in the VN, so that was pretty cool.

82. Boku no Pico
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/12/39497l.jpg
@TexasZea

Sorry zea, I couldnt keep all your series alive forever. Boku no Pico has the impressive title of being the second highest rated hentai on this list. There are definitely quite a few that didnt get nominated that I like more, but BnP is pretty good stuff! I remember not being that into the first episode, but I checked it out again recently and quite enjoyed it. Probably thought it was too gay when I originally watched it or something, but thats not really a problem for me anymore. Theres some good crossdressing, Pico makes for a solid trap even in normal clothes, and the scenes are pretty creative and good (dont see much like the car scene in regular hentai). It feels a lot more like theyre actually trying than most hentai anime. The second episode is cool in that it replaces the guy with another trappish shota, but Chico is kinda lame. Still, theres a cool scene where both of them crossdress, and Chicos sister is great. The third episode is what makes it really worthwhile. Coco is way girlier than the others, and basically all the scenes are hot. BnPs kinda a joke in the anime community (maybe because the subs always say ochinchin for some inane reason?), but I legit enjoy it. Enough for it to rank 82nd, anyway <_<

81. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/6/11153l.jpg
@Girugamesh

Whoops I ranked this way too high for some reason. Maybe I thought it was a different Gundam being animated? Honestly this should be like twenty spots lower than it currently is. Zeta Gundam definitely has a few cool ideas going for it. Quattro Bajeena is pretty much constantly amazing. Char was cool in the original Gundam, and hes quite possibly even cooler here. His I came here to laugh at you is probably the greatest quote in all Gundam (though G has some good zingers too). Being a straight sequel is pretty cool too. Usually long original shows dont get pure sequels to the original. The opening is really pretty for an old anime, and some of the crew members are cool. Unfortunately, it has a lot of problems.

Kamille is sometimes an entertaining protagonist, but he complains a lot, and his development goes in circles. The series is way too long - from episode 20-45 or so the battles with the enemies basically just have the enemies running away and swearing to come back again and win every time. Jerid especially is bad for this. The group of bad guys is really lame (the Titans, I think it was?) and the good guys are hard to cheer for too. This couldve been intentional to make things more morally ambiguous, but they feel more unrealistically evil than anything. After a lot of stalling, the last few episodes are packed with everything happening, but its super rushed. Tons of people die and the war dramatically changes course. I feel like this shouldve happened over the course of the last 13+ episodes, not just the last three or four. I know it hits hard for some people. It just didnt for me.

I watched Boku No Pico for a dare a few years back, and from what I remember of it, the first episode didn't sit right with me because it felt to me like the other guy was grooming Pico. The next two were better because the other characters were Pico's age, so it felt more consensual and without as much of a power imbalance. Coco is definitely a trap though. I didn't realise he was a boy until right at the end when Pico and Chico use male pronouns to talk about him, and before then I had assumed he was transgender or a hermaphrodite.

Honestly, Ive always thought Conan looked pretty cool! But its just so incredibly long. Ive never watched an anime thats even close to this long (400+ episodes of Precure is as good as it gets). Maybe Ill read the manga someday, but thats pretty damn long too.

M.D. Geist doesn't deserve its reputation at this point. The hate kind of made sense back in the day as the original version had some ridiculous animation errors, it got overexposed due to one of the big licensors using Geist as their mascot, and people were expecting everything to be the next Akira or Ghost in the Shell when MD Geist isn't even even trying at that. It's just a lovably dumb and violent action anime with an awesome soundtrack, a rather distinctive main character (everyone who's not Geist basically sucks though), and a neat twist. I think it succeeds pretty well on its own terms. And given that the Director's Cut version fixes most of the errors and helps fill out the plot a little, the option to still watch the original to laugh at it can only be a plus nowadays. But yeah, if it doesn't sound appealing to you on a surface level you probably shouldn't watch it!

80. A.I.C.O.: Incarnation
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/1921/91085l.jpg
@Robazoid

This came out around the same time as B the Beginning, but got a lot less talk, I feel like. Thats somewhat backwards to me, since AICO is the much better series! Due to its recency, its actually the latest series Ive watched on the list (not counting later seasons of a certain series that will appear later), so my memory of it is still quite vivid and this writeup may be a little better than my other ones. There are a lot of cool things about AICO. I like the format quite a bit, where after a couple episodes of introduction, the whole series focuses on a single mission. Gives everything a more coherent feel, and made it a good feel for binging as well. The setting is solid, and they focused on the best part of the series pretty heavily, that being Aikos connection to the Burst. I highly enjoyed every part of the series that was related to this aspect. Having an ordinary girl connected to a world-threatening organism is great stuff. She dealt with it all in an interesting way, and the duality of the two had nice consistent development, though all the twists involved were highly predictable. The only twist that was actually surprising was the stuff with the daughter, but it was more that the twists were heavily foreshadowed, which is much better than them coming out of nowhere at least.

Other than that one aspect, though, the series isnt quite as strong. The cast is all perfectly fine. I do like them pairing off for romances, which you often dont get in action shows. There just werent really any standouts to me - evil patriotic lady was probably about as good as it got for the supporting cast. The animation was consistently good, but the battles werent particularly thrilling. Fighting big blobs isnt that exciting. The villains plotline was the most blah part of the series. Didnt find any of it really compelling, and I think the show wouldve done fine without it. In the end, none of these aspects were genuinely bad, so I enjoyed AICO from start to finish. Consistency is nice sometimes.

79. Berserk
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/12/18520l.jpg
@TazzyBoyIsHere

Im just gonna assume Tazzy was nominating the 1997 Berserk because why the hell would anyone nominate the 2016 version (plus I havent seen that version)? Berserks mostly a solid fantasy series, though with pretty minimal magic (I think the manga has more of it? I generally only read finished manga, and while I wouldve thought a 1997 manga would be finished by now, Berserk is a very special series). I enjoy fantasy quite a lot. Its my favorite genre of fiction, and there have been many times that Ive watched an anime just because its fantasy. The best thing about the recent isekai trend is how many of the shows involve cool fantasy elements (the worst thing is everything else). While Berserks more serious fantasy isnt quite as much my thing, the execution is good enough that it doesnt really matter. Guts is a badass protagonist, and Griffith was a cool best friend too. Cascas not so great, but eh. The series builds things up well, from small scale battles to huge wars, and we get to see people make decisions that alter the course of nations (and of course, nations make decisions that alter the course of certain peoples lives as well). The battles are all awesome and are the best part of the series. Seeing Guts win against impossible odds is super cool. The twists and turns the story takes are certainly interesting, though painful to watch. The Eclipse is a pretty insane note to end a series on. I think it made me like the show less overall. It was just too much. I really do want to read the manga at some point. Would be great to see what happens next...

Yay, AICO! The fact that you've even seen this is a nice surprise (not enough people have, I'm still sad that this is mostly known for the atrocious dub even though the Netflix subs are fine), and I enjoyed the write-up too. Aiko is one of my favorite anime characters because I felt she approached the situation realistically and with a good amount of strength. The rest of the cast isn't anywhere near as good, but I didn't think any of them were bad either. Like you, I also enjoyed the structure of the plot being mostly a mission with a singular, defined goal. I quite liked the action as well. They may have been fighting blob monsters but the combat still quite often dealt with matters of positioning, which I feel is often ignored in action in anime.

Anyway, consistent is still a good word to describe it even if the individual parts of it resonated more with me than they did for you. At least you liked it more than Katana Maidens!

The first time I watched it, I basically hated it. I didnt think it really had anything of value going for it. The second time, I enjoyed it quite a bit more. I was more looking to analyze it, and see if I could figure out all of the metaphors. Looking at all the details of what the scenes represent rather than taking them at face value makes the show far more interesting. Almost every scene in the show is a representation of something else, often having to do with adolescence or growing up. Im sure there are other series that have a bunch of metaphors that arent obvious at first glance too, though not to the extent of FLCL. Still, that first watch was pretty bad. I could probably have ranked it higher, but not enjoying the series at face value is a big strike against it. Im kind of interested in the sequels since theyre apparently pretty different, but they seem not to be getting a good reception so far.

FLCL too low. =(

It definitely needs a rewatch (or two) to wrap your head around what it's actually trying to convey though, yeah.

Progressive wasn't that great, no. Tried too hard to be the original and just... failed to ever really establish its own identity because of it.

Alternative looks like it has potential but I'm cautious because I thought the same about Progressive!

77. Digimon

@Great_Paul

Paul didnt say what Digimon series he was nominated, so Ill just have to talk about the ones Ive seen, which are Adventure 01, Tamers, and Savers. I didnt watch Digimon back in the day, so I dont have a whole ton of nostalgia for it. I watched them during the period where I was watching a whole ton of anime over the course of a very short period of time, so my memory isnt too strong unfortunately, but Ill give it what Ive got.

Adventure: Just a fun, solid series throughout. There were boring fillery episodes (natural for a 50 episode series), but the cast was good and the creatures were cool. Not as cool as Pokemon, naturally, but they were alright. I think I watched the Our War Game movie after watching this, which was great. A lot like Summer Wars (its from the same director) but less refined. I skipped 02 since everyone said it was terrible and went straight to

Tamers: By far the best of what I watched. Digimon Adventure felt like a pretty good series for a kids show, but Tamers was just good period. The relationships between monsters and humans get way more care and attention, and the themes and such felt more mature (in a good way) than the first series. There was a bigger overall plot, so the fillery episodes werent as much of a problem, and when they did appear they were higher quality in general, IIRC. Ruki (thats Rika for the American fans) was my favorite character. Her dealing with depression and communicating with Renamon was awesome. Having more intelligent Digimon was an excellent decision IMO.

Savers: This started out great, but was just poorly written and ended up not being as good as it could be. The concept of humans merging with Digimon and fighting themselves felt pretty badass, and Masaru (Marcus) was an awesome protagonist when he was allowed to let loose. Unfortunately the rest of the cast wasnt that great, and theres a ton of fillery episodes that are pretty samey. Its still entertaining and it never gets actually bad, but it was certainly a disappointment for being so promising. The ending was pretty great too, IIRC.

Ive occasionally considered watching Tri, since Ive heard its good. Its still ongoing, I think? Will have to consider it again once its done, maybe.

There are big references to 02 in Tri, and I dont think 02 is nearly as bad as some parts of the internet say (same with Frontier)

Tri is done i think its all on Crunchyroll now

76. Twelve Kingdoms/Juuni Kokki
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/2/28687l.jpg
@MartinFF7

Ahh, the good old days when isekai anime all starred girls instead of boys (Digimons kinda isekai too I guess?) (Escaflowne did not hold up when I watched it after growing up though) (From Far Away anime adaptation when mirite). 12K has an awesome protagonist who grows over time rather than starting out as the coolest person around. Yoko basically carries the anime for me. Every episode where shes the focus is really good, and the episodes where she isnt aroundarent as good. The world she gets transferred to is cool in a lot of ways, with fun justifications for women being warriors (babies grow on trees rather than coming from women), and all sorts of neat political machinations that Yoko sticks her neck into after coming to the realm. The first and third arcs were the highlight of the show for me, since those are the ones where shes the star. The first is a neat journey of Yoko being a scared child (she did just get sucked into a strange world where everythings trying to kill her) to a powerful woman. The last few episodes especially are excellent. The third arc has her more sure of herself and dealing with politics and such. Every episode in this arc was great. I didnt really like the protagonists of the second and fourth arcs (one of them is a little boy IIRC, and hes pretty lame). Their stories are also cut short in the adaptation so we didnt even get much of a feeling of conclusiveness. Apparently the novels are still going on? Didnt realize that the author also did Shiki, which I obviously like more than this one. I feel like if the novels have been going on for 27 years, theres a good chance theyll never actually finish. her husband also wrote Another, lol

3 > 1 > 5 > 2 > 4 for Digimon seasons imo.

2 isn't bad. 4 pretty much commits slow-motion suicide in the final quarter but I still kind of liked it.

haven't watched Fusion/Xros Wars or Tri yet.

I didn't know this, no wonder I like both works so much. The only reason I rate the 12 Kingdoms a bit below my absolute favorites is because the story is incomplete.

75. Your Lie in April
@Great_Paul
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/3/67177l.jpg

Sorry Paul, didnt mean to cut two of your series so close together like this >_>. YLiA is almost a great series for me. I like just about everything about it, other than two aspects. The art style is awesome Ive always wanted to see an anime use that style A1 uses for its anime EDs, so it was nice to finally get one. The animation is great too, with some really incredible sequences (especially that one in the final episode). Musical settings are always cool (I love Nodame Cantabile), and the performances themselves were all enjoyable to me. And most importantly, since the whole series is incredibly character-focused, the cast is almost great. Kousei may be flawed in a lot of ways, and hes not always likable, but hes super compelling and makes for a great protagonist. I think Ive seen a few complaints out there about him, but I highly enjoyed what he brought to the show. Emi and Takeshi are awesome late introductions to the show. A lot of times a series will introduce new characters when the original storys running out of steam, and it often doesnt work, but here I quite liked it. Hiroko was great new character too. Kinda like the mom Kousei always wished he had, lol. Looking at the main characters, I remember practically nothing about Ryota, so maybe he was bad? Or just plain. I dunno.

Tsubaki, on the other hand, is terribly lame and brings down just about every scene shes in. Rival characters in romances are often pretty shit, since they basically just exist to derail the happiness of the main couple, whether intentionally or inadvertently. Tsubaki fits into both categories. Outside of her relationship with Kouhei, she has practically nothing going on, so shes boring as well as annoying. Shes tolerable early on where she gets less screen time and isnt sabotaging Kouhei all the time. In the second half shes just terrible in every scene shes in though. Kaori herself is awesome. I basically loved the series for the first half, and Kaori was the main reason for that. She brightens almost every scene shes in, her own playing is excellent, and her relationship with Kouhei is awesome. Unfortunately the drama with her in the second half is very poorly executed. I really wish theyd explained the severity of her illness much earlier. Right up until the final episode, it feels like shes fighting to survive against a potentially deadly disease, but not in a way thats particularly interesting, since shes just not there most of the time. I think it wouldve been much more impactful if theyd just revealed that she had a terminal illness and was going to die soon halfway through the show, and had her around a lot more than she was. That wouldve resulted in much more genuine drama IMO, plus we wouldve gotten more of her. So yeah, I loved the first half, and the second half had its good parts, but it brought the show down overall.
