74. School-Live
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/1798/91548l.jpg
@Robazoid

I was actually pretty excited about School-Live before it aired. I didnt know that much about it, but I know it started out as a cute girl SoL series before having a twist that changes everything. The way they did the twist was definitely not what I was expecting, but it was cool anyway! For the most part, I quite enjoyed the show. The non-SoL parts are quite well executed with the unusual cast, and all the related twists are good too. Kurumi is pretty damn awesome most of the time, and the others are okay. It feels dangerous (unlike, say, Girls Last Tour), and it has good character development and drama. The weakness is a bit of a weird one: as a slice of life show, its just bad. Most of the first episode and then a few other episodes throughout the show are slice of life, and they suck. The cast doesnt have great chemistry and the humor value is close to zero. It feels like the author wanted to make the other kind of series and then just added the slice of life elements later on without having the skill to make them good. Im curious if the manga version is any better I could see it doing better with the tone, at least, considering that the anime is from Worst Anime Studio of All Time Lerche.

School-Live manga definitely has a more consistent tone. It doesn't really focus much on the slice-of-life comedy stuff at all, especially compared to the anime.

73. Barakamon
@tazzyboyishere
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/5/59321l.jpg

Lots of the series in this area feel like I should like them more than they do. I think a bunch of them are shows with a strong premise or introduction, that didnt quite pan out as well as they couldve. I still like them, but they arent among my favorites. I thought that Barakamons premise was pretty excellent, and the show mostly works out. The first episode was kind of meh, but as Handa developed and Naru got more screentime, the show got much more enjoyable. The mandom sketch is one of the funniest things Ive seen. Hinas pretty adorable too. Getting actual little kids to do the voices worked out pretty well for the show The Phantom Menace this is not. I think I watched one or two episodes of the spinoff, which was terrible, but that doesnt have any effect on my score for this. Handas calligraphy was one of the weaker aspects of the show I think. Its one of those things were youre like oh cool! Theyve never made a show about that before! and then you watch the show and realize why they didnt. Calligraphy just isnt very interesting and feels more outdated than ever in an era where typing is so much better than writing. But yeah, mostly good times.

I actually thought the SoL parts of School-Live were all really good! Yuki was a super fun character and everyone else bounce off of her well. Still, even then the SoL parts were mostly standard for the genre. I just thought they were enhanced by the other half of the show, and what it meant psychologically for the girls to be having fun like that despite their situation.

I remember liking the first couple of episodes of School Live but then thinking it got a lot worse as it went on for some reason I don't entirely remember. (I've forgotten most things about the show)

72. Sailor Moon
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/10/6897l.jpg
@Anagram

This ranking is highly colored by nostalgia and reading the manga, since I havent watched the anime since I was like, 9? Except for Sailor Moon Crystal for a while but that was bad for some reason. Not sure how they screwed it up so much. For a while, Id watch this before going to school every morning. It ended just before school started, so Id have to run to get there on time. I enjoyed the show a whole lot though, and tried to catch as many episodes as I could. I dont think I watched much beyond the first series (I remember seeing Chibi Usa but not all that much of the outer Scouts), but the later series have some of the lamer content from the series anyway, so eh (some of the better content too, of course). Having the team come together over time was pretty awesome, and I think it was especially cool when they got to meet Sailor V and find out she wasnt just a video game character. A couple of my favorite moments were right near the end of the first series, when Serena and Darien transformed in the elevator to save each other and revealed their identities, and when everyone joined forces to defeat Queen Beryl at the end. Was just too hype when I was a kid. Feel like it probably inspired a lot of other series. When I was younger Mercury was my favorite Scout (cuz shes the nerd, obviously), but the non-Moon Scouts dont get as much focus in general in the manga, unfortunately. At least shes somewhat less clumsy there, though she still has to endure a lot of undeserved suffering (Chibi Usa being so mean to her all the time was terrible). I doubt it would hold up as well if I watched it now due to all the filler and such, but I still have fond memories of it.

71. Ouran Highschool Host Club
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/3/2030l.jpg
@Girugamesh

I have a lot of not-so-positive memories of this series. The premise vaguely annoys me, and a lot of the cast is not so great. Theres a dumb episode later in the series where Haruhi is revealed to be deathly afraid of thunder/lightning, which is annoying in all the anime its used in (for some reason this is a common thing in anime). The harem aspects are pretty silly too. But none of that matters all that much, because the show is really funny and Haruhi is awesome. I think it was actually one of the first shoujo anime I saw, and though it doesnt really represent the genre very much, it was a solid introduction. All the stuff with Haruhi crossdressing was inherently comical, and her relationships with the rest of the guys were mostly good stuff too. I think the little kid one was the only one who was never entertaining? That one girl (Renge?) who rises from the floor on the spinning thing was always hilarious too. I dont remember it too well now, but it was a fun show to watch early in my anime career.

My experience with Sailor Moon was also watching it on TV when I was younger. I'm not even really sure how the episodes I watched match up with the Japanese series. For some reason I remember jumping from around Queen Beryl's defeat to Chibi Usa showing up and getting confused by that.

It always amuses me that over a decade later I can still only 2 anime characters named Haruhi and their anime started airing within 2 days of each other.

70. Mind Game
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/8/4028l.jpg
@Xeybozn

Im sad to say that this is probably one of my least-remembered titles on the list. I watched it a long time ago, and I generally struggle to remember movies more than series (even Princess Mononoke, which I think I liked quite a bit, is mostly a blank in my mind). I do remember it mostly being pretty weird and skipping from plot point to plot point, but honestly Im not even sure how comedic/serious it was. The main thing I remember about it is a lengthy sequence where the characters are falling down a pit (or vortex or something), encountering all sorts of strange situations and people (I think they meet most of the cast of the movie). I believe I enjoyed this sequence quite a bit, since it kinda made everything make sense. The animation was pretty funky too. Sorry I cant give more detail on why I liked it :p

69. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/3/65791l.jpg
@Shonen_Bat

Shonen Bat didnt specify if this was the whole series or just the first season, so Im just gonna go ahead and assume he meant for it to be everything. Which is unfortunate in a way, because it would be somewhat higher if it was just the first season! Haruhi is a pretty inconsistent show, all in all. Even right from the start, the show has a mix of plot-focused episodes and episodic stories. Im not saying episodic stories are bad, but there were definitely a few stinkers in S1. Episode 0 might be a neat in-joke, but putting it first made it somewhat off-putting, and Someday in the Rain just plain sucks. Im not saying being episodic is a bad thing, of course, since there are some great one-offs too, particularly Day of Sagittarius, but some of them definitely lack impact. Ive actually watched the first season twice, due to KyoAnis funky airing of Haruhi 2009, which aired all 26 episodes in chronological order. I enjoyed it rather more the second time, because the broadcast order is dumb and serves no purpose. I also found that I like the Melancholy episodes rather more than the rest of S1. They tell a really excellent story, with a lot of cool developments as it goes along, that isnt really matched by anything in the rest of Haruhi.

Sighs in S2 isnt quite as riveting, but its still very entertaining, and I love how its aired as if its a continuous story, with episodes ending in the middle of scenes rather than waiting for logical stopping points. S2 also includes Endless Eight, however, which is the worst piece of animation ever to be aired. Airing the same episode eight times (and wasting their time re-animating it each time) was a ridiculously stupid idea, and I really hated it. I only watched three of the episodes (the first two and the last one), but it was still enough to basically ruin S2. Disappearance was a nice recovery, though I still didnt like it quite as much as the Melancholy storyline. Ive never been a huge fan of Kyon the things that happen around him are much more interesting than he is and some of the movies biggest scenes revolve around him. Alternate Nagato is super awesome at least. Easily one of the moest characters of all time. Basically every scene with her is ultra adorable. Haruhi is my favorite character overall though, and her screentime in the movie is obviously a bit limited (Ive seen people complain that shes too mean, but I just think that makes her more entertaining). So yeah, cool series overall, but definitely harmed by some bizarre adaptation decisions.

Tagging. I didn't see your nomination topic until it was too late and I almost forgot you were doing this. I remembered a while ago seeing you say disappointing things about 12 Kingdoms so I thought it would be lower, but everything you said is pretty much exactly how I feel lol. It seemed like the author was setting up a big epic world and everything would come together eventually, but as it is, the side-stories are uninteresting with no big pay off.

68. My Little Sister Cant Be This Cute (OreImo)
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/8/24875l.jpg
@TexasZea

How fitting that this comes right after Haruhi. Like Haruhi, it starts out pretty great, and is ruined by a later entry in the series - namely the ending, which is one of the worst endings of all time. But well get to that later. I quite like most things about OreImo, especially in the first season. Pretty much the whole cast is quite good (though Manami is boring). Kuroneko is amazing and was one of my favorite characters for a while, Kirinos super entertaining, Kyousukes a cool dude until later in the show, and Ayase is great until the second season too. I like Saori a good amount as well, though her no-glasses design is bad and she doesnt get much screentime. Throughout S1, they all become good friends, and the antics they get up to are generally really entertaining. Almost all of them are not very good people, and the way they nerd it up all the time is great. The second season is still good while focusing on these aspects, but it adds romantic elements which dont always work so well. The harem aspects of the series are played up much harder, which is bad with all the characters, since only two characters ever have a chance and the rest is just a waste of time and hurts the girls characters.

Some people were weirded out by the relationship between Kirino and Kyousuke, but I enjoyed basically all aspects of it. The romantic tension between them is fun, and I dont have the hangups relating to incest that some viewers seem to. Its great when theyre just being friends too. Learning to rely on each other and become better siblings is cool from a dramatic perspective, and they play off each other in a funny and generally entertaining way. I usually dont dock a series for shipping reasons, since ending up with one of the characters who gets lots of development is generally the best thing for a series - the characters that get the most development should get the most focus, and the best girl is usually cooler than the main character anyway. OreImo failed really hard with the execution though. First, the arc where he dates Kuroneko is awesome. They made a wonderful couple, and they seemed like they would be very happy with each other. Kuroneko had a lot of room for development, too, so this wouldve worked well for the show. Seeing her and Kirino become sisters would also have been awesome. Second, the way he ends up with Kirino is terrible. Its over the top in a way that the rest of the series isnt, and having them get fake married only to break up less than 60 seconds later is one of the most painful endings ever. What the fuck was the author thinking? Just have him stay with Kuroneko if hes not going to get with Kirino. Total garbage ending.

With incest, I don't really see it as a fetish, though I guess it can be that for some people. I don't really think it's that bad in anime, which is totally different from real life (I enjoy characters who murder people in anime, but I think murder is wrong IRL), and on top of that, it's not really that bad in real life. The genetic issues are way overblown, so long as you're not doing it for generations. But uh, yeah, it doesn't bother me at all.

67. New Game
@Reg
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/9/80417l.jpg

Yay, a series where the second season doesnt shit the bed! How nice! With New Game, I actually liked the second season a lot better than the first. The show has a good premise and some good fundamentals, but S1 didnt do much that was very interesting with them. The primary problem with the show, in my eyes is the main 4 characters. It feels like the show wants to copy every other cute girl SoL by having a primary cast of four relatively new girls with less experience than the others, and has them hanging out and doing typical cute girl stuff more often than it should. Aobas quite good as the main character, showing a lot of development throughout the show and feeling like someone you should cheer for. The show handles her well throughout both seasons, though her dumb ribbon thing looks terrible and they should have kept it away after they got rid of it for that one scene. Hifumi works well as the older woman whos just starting to get promoted, too. Her personalitys quite different from Aobas, so its cool to see the different ways she tries to adapt to new challenges, and shes just plain entertaining on her own, hanging out with her hedgehog too. Its the other two that really shouldnt exist. Hajime and Yun might be okay characters in another show, but they really serve no purpose here. The greater cast is much more interesting than they are, and they dont have any particularly good development. When theyre around I mostly just get annoyed that theyre stealing screentime from better characters (itd be great to see even more Hifumi).

What really makes the show is the setting and the greater cast. Its cool how its a reasonably big company, and we get to see people in a whole bunch of different departments and roles. Kou is the highlight, since shes super fun and interesting and gets a ton of screentime. Shes actually more important than pretty much everyone other than Aoba, I feel. Her comedy is usually dead on, she has the best fanservice in the show (walking around with no pants all the time is one of the best ways to do fanservice, rather than dumb jiggles or grabs or flashes or whatever), her character development surpasses even Aobas, plus she has a cute (almost) girlfriend. Kou and Rin should really be dating, but for whatever reason SoL authors have an aversion to making couples real rather than just teasing them. They seem to live together for a substantial portion of the series, and Rin is pretty clearly crazy in love with Kou, but they never want to make anything clear. Bleh. Hazuki unfortunately isnt as good as the rest her comedy isnt funny, and she never evolves much beyond that. Ahagon is solid, but probably because she hangs around with the other star of the show: Nene. I was expecting Nene to be an annoying character at first, but once she finally becomes an important character, shes amazing. Her starring episode in S1 is by far the funniest of the season, and her becoming a main character in S2 is a big reason its so much better than S1. Her development is extremely emotional and good, and honestly more interesting than Aobas is. Everyones development is basically better in S2, really, so she probably benefits from becoming a more serious character there. The new characters introduced are cool too. Would be cool to see a third season, though the S2 finale was oddly final for a show like this.

I thought Nene was a hugely annoying character, so I enjoyed S2 way less than the first. I agree with your opinions about the rest of the cast though. Yun and Hajime were boring.

Nene was a great character, but S1 was still a lot better

@TexasZea

So when I first started watching anime, I had this idea that all fanservice was evil, and that if a series was based on fanservice, itd automatically be bad. Over time, however, I watched a good portion of the conventionally good anime out there, and had to start looking at other stuff to watch that I hadnt considered before. Plus, some people I trusted (user TexasZea included) had some good things to say about some of these shows. Honestly, I think Ive enjoyed all the ones I watched a good amount? Strike Witches was great, Qwaser of Stigmata has one of the greatest characters ever, Highschool DxD had a fun first season, and Queens Blade is a genuinely enjoyable adventure show. The cast isnt amazing, but its definitely good, with some great character designs. Alleyne has one of my favorite designs ever (see the link above). All the characters are designed by different artists, so theres some good variety too. The story isnt anything groundbreaking, but its good stuff. It also helps that the cast is basically 100% female, so it doesnt feel as leery as it could. The fanservice itself isnt generally super hot, but it doesnt derail the show too badly either. I dunno, theres not too much to say about QB, everything about it is basically just good times. The only downfall is that after season 2, the show kinda disappears. Rebellion looked to be a cool continuation with a combination of new and old characters, but it was clearly the first half of a two-season story, and season two just never happened, so its awkwardly incomplete. And the Vanquished Queens OVAs are exactly the kind of sleazy stuff the main series managed not to be. Its definitely a shame we didnt get more quality QB content. I feel like its been a while since the last great fanservice focused series (maybe not since Keijo?).
