Just finished playing through the Final Fantasy 4: Complete Collection for the psp.

I remember my first time playing it on the fan, and I really really liked all the improvements it had.

I didn't really get why almost half the people I've seen talk about it hate The After Years. I thought it was a pretty neat way to add some more story, background, and personality to the characters.

Today I once again realized that I can't remember how Moribito ends, just that there was whole flaky combat thing at the end. Specifically I couldn't recall whether the prince lives or dies, mostly because I thought he had to die for the renewal ritual to work. Apparently that wasn't actually the case.

Kind of a mediocre show.

I also didn't realize Tucker was Hiei until he came to my convention this year. It should have been obvious.

It also took me way too long to realize the narrator from Kai and Super was the same one from the original Dragon Ball.

Finished Armored Girls, which was about as goofy and low-rent as I thought. Still an enjoyable series, all things considered.

Afterward I found some clips featuring fights from Overlord and I kinda want to watch that, especially after wiki-walking some extra details. I might also cave and watch SAO one of these days.

The first half of season 2 is definitely the weakest part but the last half is IMO some of the best episodes of anime that exist. The ending especially is probably my favorite (minus the ambiguous cart scene).

Code geass in general has somehow remained in my top 5 anime since I've seen it despite several drastic changes in taste. It's just straight up compelling and engaging on several different fronts.

Overlord,it's touched briefly in the show, that ainz has felt disconnected from his humanity ever since being isekai'd, and has little empathy towards humans. Honestly, I don't think the explaination or logical consistence even matters, given that I have no issue with the "problem". What matters is the show is a load of fun, and unconventional elements in any show are inherently interesting.

Decided to revisit Naruto Shippuden: Naruto vs Sasuke for the DS yesterday... and almost immediately remembered why I stopped playing it. The level design is absolutely terrible in places plus the combat is a little annoying. Then I unlocked Rock Lee and I'm enjoying the game quite a bit more. Lee has a much higher jump (albeit at the cost of not being able to use shurikens -- a detail I kinda like even though it's a massive inconvenience) which helps overcome some of the crappier aspects of the platforming.

That and I generally love unlockable characters, which tends to get more interested in a game.

And just recently since it's pretty much done I started on Hero academia S3, just finished episode 4 of it and damn, what a great episode it was, very much looking forward to seeing more of it

I realize it's an odd complaint to make (considering the medium and who it's made for).....but I LOATH all the kiddie fucking anime shit.

If the character is in high school....I'm probably going to hate it.

If there is too much humor, or romance is the main focus....I am DEFINITELY going to hate it.

So you are probably wondering what the hell kind of anime I DO like.

Well. Here it goes:

1.) Moribito Guardian of the Spirit. Seriously, why does no one EVER mention this fucking INCREDIBLE series?
2.) Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex (and Arise). Insanely good. All of them.
3.) Baccano.
4.) Cowboy Bebop
5.) Ergo Proxy
6.) Texhnolyze (or however it's spelled)
7.) B: The Beginning (totally out of left field, and totally enjoyed it).
8.) Blue Sub 6
9.) Wolf's Rain
10.) Eden of the East
11.) Juni Taisen
12.) Inuyashiki (if you havent heard of this one, you need to download it immediately. Holy shit.)

And that's just the series. I could talk about anime MOVIES until the sun goes out.

Moribito got localized in the U.S. during the Great Recession (i.e. at the time of the Great DVD Market Crash), but before the Age of Streaming Video, and the rights belong to Media Blasters, which has virtually no money for marketing, so ... basically a perfect storm of things setting it up to fail. Which is a shame, because it is a great series.

Basically, the work life of a Japanese person is really oppresive. In the US, people often. Reminisce about the college days of their life. In Japan, they refine they a bit further to high school because not everyone has gone to college. People want to relive those days, and see stories where characters fix their hangups, or goof off with friends they never had.

In other words, high school is the default setting where a character would have freedom to explore their life and be relatable.

I must have missed your post about Moribitio. Funny you should mention the pacing issues, because I've always used that anime as a good indicator of who has the attention span of a gnat, and who can just sit back and enjoy the slow and smooth ride. It's definitely not made for kids, because they'd probably fall asleep after the first episode. "Where are all the explosions and boobs and bubbly characters that speak with emojis floating over their heads!?!?! I can't process this!!!" lol. Characterization problems? Yeah. It's a hard pill to swallow because it's so unusual. The characters aren't bipolar idiots in middle school, and the main female protagonist never has a love interest and is never sexualized. It's basically anti-anime.

People who dislike animes like Moribitio, tend to love stuff like One Piece and Dragon Ball.

Wolf's Rain is the kind of anime I'd like to like (simply because wolves masquerading as people is a neat idea), but I hated the character designs, the story was goofy, you had that awful final arc that killed off like everybody -- although the walrus fight was badass, etc.

That final arc is one of the best things about the series. Very few animes (or tv shows in general) have the balls to do something like that. What did you hate about the character designs? I thought they were pretty good. And the production values for the whole series were pretty solid throughout. And yer damn right about that walrus fight. lol

Uh, DBZ is also a show with ridiculous pacing issues (which is why it's had its share of edits and re-cuts). It just skews in a different direction. Pacing isn't a synonym for fight scenes.

GreenKnight127 posted...

Because most show runners have better planning. The final arc reinforces the feeling that they had no clue how they wanted the show to end.

What did you hate about the character designs?

Well, for starters, the designs are done to play up the show's bisho and homo-erotic elements, with Tsume being the most obvious example. (Other shows have done similar, but even Saiyuki -- a show basically built around shipping male characters -- didn't seem this blatant and its designs could be neat. And in general, I have no problem with gay fan-service and greatly enjoyed Ouran High which frequently pushed it.) The end result is somewhat insipid pretty boy designs that you'd see expect to see in any garden variety shojo.

The wolf designs were alright.

I also wasn't nearly as into FFTA as FFT, although humorously enough I finished FFTA but not FFT (got sidetracked by quests, etc). I think the format and setting just didn't appeal to me as much, since FFTA framed everything as a kind of game whereas FFT framed things as battles in a war.

Also, as much as I liked FFTA the first time around (although the game admittedly had some issues), I could never get into a replay.

Are you trolling or do you really not know? >_> Besides the fanbase shipping the boys together, the character designer and director said in an interview that Toboe and Tsume were more than just friends. And it's not like the artstyle is very subtle about sexualizing the guys while keeping the women overdressed.

But is the controversy about:

In short, yes. I personally have no issues with the show going in that direction (because the truth is in the title, as far as I am concerned), but there are definitely people who do.

I dont really see why this is a thing/
First off its called Overlord, which denotes ruling by force. So if we go off world history there were plenty of rulers who were well liked and appear to be benevolent but became dictators.

Then early off in the series, he starts telling his minions how everything is simply done to gain a benefit.
Never does he once actually perform a benevolent act that hasnt benefited him somehow.

Early on he talks about how he looses his empathy for humans and no longer feels pain for them.

He subjugates an entire race.

He abducts humans and performs experiments on them.

He then sets up for people to invade him and then slaughters them.

Its hinted at hes going to be betrayed, I already know who it is going to be based off easy evidence.

He reprogrammed Albedo to be in love with Momonga which is him when he was human, however hes lost that humanity and has assumed the mantle of Ains Al Goal. Shes tired of being ignored too.

I liked wolf's rain quite a bit when I last watched it but its been quite a while. Strong characters and utterly unique. Heading for paradise... its kind of obvious how the ending was gonna go. While it had a little manservice its not a yaoi show or anything.

Moribito was sort of hit and miss for me. The beginning really got things going before the anime decided "ok, fun parts over" and then it slowed down and never again reached those heights. Kingdom's first arc had a similar story structure (intro, hectic escape, travel period, finale) but handled it much better IMO. Also it pissed me off irrationally with that spear move balsa does they keep bringing up. The move does nothing. Theres no reason it should have helped remotely in a fight but its treated like some ultimate dangerous move. Considering most of the fighting is very on point and well choreographed that just made me rage.

I liked eden of the east decently. The beginning especially was really strong IMO. The most fun amnesiac character I can think of. Been a long while since I've seen it as well.

I've full completed FFTA twice (all 300 missions and the bonus cid questline afterwards). Despite the story being stupid and laws being also stupid, I loved that game. I feel like it and FFT got opposite things right. FFT:WotL has one of the most enjoyable game storylines and characters but the gameplay aspects are unrefined and cumbersome. The random battles are obnoxious as hell and a lot of the maps were pretty annoying as well.

FFTA has much better maps and skills and class balance and quests and gameplay set up but its story is actually stupid and the characters are boring children that naively stumble their way through the story. Was still stupidly excited to get the pink/white hair girl in post game. Also it's great that you can kill off monteblanc in the jagds. All the ivalice games ended up being my favorite FF games in general.

This is good news! White Album 2 is one of those VNs I wish would get localized. Granted, the anime adaptation can only do so much, but I still enjoyed what little of the story that showed me. Great stuff.

(See, now, that's an example of a high school anime that doesn't suck, IMO.)

Mainly cuz it exists to be a tragic backstory for college students that you get to experience firsthand. I really thought it was nice that for most of the VN Haruki was a couple years older than the vast majority of VN protags. It felt like it was trying to connect to that audience.

By the way, apparently the translation sucks. koestl, the guy who translated Grisaia and is an actual professional, picked apart a couple lines and it does look pretty bad :(

I'm sure someone already mentioned but it's hilarious to me that conception is getting an anime this season. Only a week or so away. I'm somewhat hopeful the SOA anime will be decent. I liked the first arc of the first season and the last arc of the second season a decent bit. I remember hearing alicization was supposed to be "where it gets good" quite a while ago.

We get a yuri anime of a manga that I dropped cause the characters were fucking stupid and obnoxious. Maybe the anime will be better? With my luck I'll hate it but this is the one that'll do well despite citrus getting a lot of hate.

Theres quite a few original anime this season but almost all of them look really bad from the synopsis and have stupid names.

Goblin Slayer is about all I'm really looking forward to. After a super lackluster season it feels like we immediately get another one. Oh well, we had several good season recently starting back with made in abyss.

Also now that I'm looking, jesus theres so many game based anime this upcoming season. Theres like 10. The only game based anime I can think of recently that was any good at all was the first season of shingeki no bahumut and as far as I know it had almost no connection to the game. Kinda bummed to be honest. At least the season after has some good stuff. Maybe I'll even get lucky and there will be some surprise hits this season.

Unfortunate. White Album 2 deserves better, IMO.

And here I am wondering if it will manage to be a bigger dumpster fire than the Akiba's Trip anime (... that pretty much had nothing to do with either of the games).

Here's new gameplay footage for Vesperia definitive edition.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncGvWRUH91g" data-time="

Looks like they just inserted the new VA lines for Yuri into new scenes and kept the old ones, instead of a full rerecording job. Understandable from a cost perspective, really. But it is pretty noticeable and a bit jarring, especially if you're someone like me who has played this game a lot (around 400 hours total across multiple replays) and have the voices so deeply ingrained in your memory.

At around 3:00, you can see a new scene with the new VA.

To his credit, the new VA is doing a good job trying to emulate Troy Baker's almost iconic voice, but it's still pretty clear that's a different person. And Karol and Rita definitely sound older, which is no surprise.

Kiiinda not feeling the VA for Patty though; Mieu was my least favorite voice in Abyss. Might come to like her eventually while playing, but who knows. Will just have to play the game and see.

And just as I was typing this up, I found out that Bandai Namco didn't even ask Baker to come back to voice him.

https://twitter.com/TroyBakerVA/status/1043084182405173248

Which is bizarre, since they managed to get everybody else back to record new lines.

The Vesperia board is lighting up about this issue, and I can definitely understand why. Troy Baker IS Yuri Lowell.

That is pretty upsetting and the voices are clearly different. To hear they didn't even ask him back is bizarre. I'd really like to hear why that happened. The only thing that made even a tiny bit of sense was some comments about him being more expensive or something but still...

Theres no way they don't come out behind on this decision and they would be madmen to think it wouldn't end up being a huge deal.

It really just seems to make no sense.

I know Kojima was able to get Troy Baker to do a voice for his new game, but ... that's Kojima.

Theoretically adapted from the first game, the PSP title that the U.S. did not get, but all I have looked up suggests that the anime has almost nothing to do with that (like the Akiba's Trip anime, as I said).
