The last topic purged, which sucks hard since unfortunately I don't have the write-ups stored anywhere; but this may be a good opportunity to ask if you're willing to follow this topic despite contest fever. I'd ask of you to bump this every once in a while if I haven't been around for more than 24 hours.

I'm going to do a recap of my recap for continuity purposes.

Intro:

Back in June/July, there was an incredibly hot Steam sale where my brother got me Super Meat Boy, Half-Life 1, Fallout 1 and 2, and Portal, among others, including Undertale, as an advance birthday present. Suffice to say, I was extremely happy.

I haven't really played many RPGs (particularly turn-based ones) in general. I know this game draws inspiration from Earthbound, but since I hadn't played the Mother series, I considered to play the whole series before this game to have a better point of comparison. However, I checked the overall length from the three Mother games and saw that it was going to take a really long time if I wanted to play those games and then Undertale, so I said: "You know what, screw it, I'm gonna play Undertale, and if it's a good game it will stand out as one on its own right."

So I started it like a month and a half ago, but I've had sporadic game sessions since then (which I plan to do more often from now on so I don't lose the vibe of it). I have sunk some hours in, but I still want to do a recap here of what I've done before posting where I left off.

Things I know about this game:

Oh boy... Some of you may gonna be mad for some of the things I know already. The thing is, I had only played the demo of Undertale back in 2015 when BGE happened, but I didn't have a Steam account until this year and I wasn't planning on playing it on a near future, so I stumbled into some spoilerific videos without actually knowing it, but I watched them out of curiosity anyway. Some of the things I know include:

-This is arguably the most popular indie game ever, or at least since Super Meat Boy. It started a phenomenon 3 years ago which still has an impact to this day, although the fever has sort of worn of.
-You can spare everyone.
-The game has alternate endings, I believe 4, which include Pacifist and Genocide routes. Not really sure about the others.
-The name of the character you control is canonically Frisk.
-Certain character named Sans is the last boss of the Genocide route, and a song called Megalovania plays in it. I think that's common knowledge already (sort of how Sheik in Ocarina of Time is actually Princess Zelda), but I'll still put it in spoiler tags.
-Something about seven souls, which I didn't remember was a thing until I started playing and have been somehow understanding more about it.
-In the last VGM Contest, there were two (amazing) songs: Battle Against a True Hero, and Hopes and Dreams, none of which have yet appeared in-game yet. Considering I'm currently at the fight with Undyne, I was hoping I could hear BAaTH since the title made sense from what I've seen on my playthrough, and since the YouTube video actually shows her sprite, I was like: "Aww... Well, not yet."
-Finally, by watching a video called: "What happens when you name yourself 'gay'?", I saw that among many other things, after defeating Sans, you get... an unusually lovely sprite. Aparently she goes by the name Chara? Or maybe you change the name to that? I don't know... Time to find out! Yes, I assume I was watching one of the endings, so it's a real shame, but what can you do. At least I don't know the context, so... Yeah, there's that.

I first played the demo 3 years ago, giving "the fallen human" a name that I don't remember. I stumbled upon Flowey, then I was guided by goat momma Toriel. The demo took me around an hour to complete (it stops at the end of the Toriel fight). I remember killing and sparing what I wanted, reaching Toriel and not being able to spare her, so I had to kill her.

...Or so I thought, since I gave my opinion on the demo here on the board (I thought it was an okay experience), and when I mentioned not being able to spare her, someone told me: "Keep trying..." And so I replayed it, taking me around 30 minutes to do it again until I got to Toriel and tried to spare her insistently until I succeeded. Then I got a strange message from Flowey that I didn't understand until I recently watched a video called something like: "What happens if you spare Toriel after killing her?" The message Flowey says is the exact same that he said when I replayed the demo, but now I realized the scary connotation of him saying: "I saw what you did. You killed her, then you regretted it. Veeery clever." Flowey knows things, and that's a little creepy.

Fastforward to now, where I played this whole introductory section again. I didn't know her name was Frisk at first, but then I thought: "Well, I don't identify myself with a little girl, so I won't put my name on it. Frisk it is!" I got a warning saying that this name would give me trouble, but I thought every name would give you this message, so I proceeded anyway. Ohhh boy. I kept dying over and over, something like 5 times on this whole first section alone, and I thought: "I don't remember the game being so difficult. I know I haven't played it a long time but... This is just weird." Then I realized my mistake.

So I went ahead and restarted my file. Since I thought Pacifist was an easy path to start before entering harder battles on other game modes, I thought it was a good way to start. I also named the girl Lily this time since i thought it was a cute name for a merciful girl. Something I found interesting is that the game had certain memory of what you have done on past playthroughs; I noticed this when I saw Flowey saying something like: "What? You want to make me introduce myself as if I hadn't done this before? Anyway..."; and also when Toriel asked me for cinnamon or butterscotch cake, then her "guessing" that I preferred cinnamon.

By playing the same introductory section 3 years later (and after correcting my mistake of naming myself "Frisk"), it all felt pretty familiar and I managed to advance fairly quickly, maybe clocking around 45 minutes to Toriel's house IIRC. In "Frisk" mode, I had enough to afford a Spider Donut, and it was pretty necessary as well; but in "Lily" mode, I just had enough gold to buy some Spider...-something-else. Something important is that I tried different things on those two attempts; the first one started with Flowey: I first dodged all of his (her? its?) bullets to see what happened: "You know what's going on down here, don't you?". But on my restart, I touched them from the beginning, draining almost all my life and hearing: "In this world, it is kill or be killed." I did the same with the training dummy -- at first I just started a conversation, but the second time I did a trick I just had recently learned: You can actually spare it to boredom (lol).

I noticed everything was pretty much equal to the demo, from the candy-spilling, to the enemies, jokes, and attack patterns. I'm also a completionist, so I try to always make sure I've tried every possible option and read every dialogue (that's why I also plan to do every ending as well); I also tend to talk to NPCs at least twice with the same purpose. Even then, each time I have to choose only one option to advance, I choose either: 1._The most "pacifist" or kind one, or 2._The one I feel would flow better with the story (if I'm going to be kind and merciful, I might as well tell everyone the truth as well! So that's what I've done as well).

Upon reaching Toriel's house, I felt pretty relaxed with the music and had some nice memories of 2015. I went to bed but noticed that it didn't spawn a message I got back then, not by turning the lights on or off. Huh... Then I listened to Toriel's story until I could no longer do anything more than ask for the path to the exit of the ruins. When she told me to go back, I went to bed and there it was: "Lily! Wake up! You are the future of humans and monsters!" (I think that's the same voice you hear on the Game Over screen...)

Then I fought Toriel, trying to deliberately die, but couldn't. So after trying to talk to her and failing, I spared her until the battle was over. And then... Flowey: You managed to spare the life of a single being. Veeery clever. Ugh... Is there anything that could catch Flowey off-guard? Anyway, I went on my way, a light shined progressively, and...

"UNDERTALE... By Toby Fox"

Nice...

Brand new area. I tried to go back to the ruins, but couldn't (Toriel herself said she didn't want me to ever come back). Okay, so I proceeded and wanted to play a little bit more. I heard some strange noises in the woods until a shadow appeared... It asked me to stretch my hand... And after a funny fart noise, Sans appeared! (Hoho! I never imagined I would meet him so soon! That's interesting). He asked me to hide behind a conveniently-shaped lamp because his brother, called Papyrus, wanted to FREAKING KILL ME. I thought he was a fearsome guy at first but... He sounded kind of all over the place. Plus, that music...

Anyway, I ended my second day of playtime saving on the nearest star.

Okay, so I just took a quick glance to the part on the snowy mountains in order to remember a little of what I did on that whole section, since I only remember few parts. I read again what Flowey says when you spare Toriel, and my God, I don't remember it ever mentioning something about a regicide (I can only think of the Regi Pokemon, since I've never heard that word before, but I think it has to do with a different kind of genocide).

Anyway, on my third day, I looked at this convenient box that let me put and take out things, but it wasn't necessary as of right now. I went up and saw a fishing cane, reeled it and put it back, then repeated the process but nothing happened. Eh. I returned and went right. I don't actually remember the order of things as of right now, but some of the things I did on the third and fourth days included:

-Fighting a dog, which was technically my first actual death in the game; I just couldn't figure out how to defeat it in a pacific way; its attacks always hit me no matter how much I tried avoiding them; I even tried attacking it in order to scare it a little, but it still didn't work. I was tempted to look at a guide, but didn't. Turns out the clue was when it mentioned something about movement; then I tried not moving, and it worked! A couple of screens later I see Sans mentioning the blue attacks thing.

-Kicking a snowball to deposit it into a hole, which I did a few times to have a better score, but with no luck of a better prize.

-Taking a snowman's head with the promise of taking it to every corner of the world (and I still have it until now).

-Talking to Sans time and time again (how does he teleport that fast? I mean, there's even one screen when he appears twice!). He offered me ice cream or something, although neither my money nor my will to pay him exorbitant amounts of money managed to do anything about it.

-Telling the truth... Kind of. I saved near a frozen spaghetti (in which I molested a mouse for a while, just as in the tutorial section), then I told Papyrus that jumble was harder than crossword (don't even know what jumble is, since English is not my main language, but I wanted to be polite); then I told him that I left the spaghetti untouched, which he appreciated.

-Solving various (sometimes laughably easy) puzzles from Papyrus. On the first one, I only had to swipe snow to find a secret switch. Another one consisted on going on a path without being electrocuted, in which I purposefully electrocuted myself to see what happened, and the result was hilarious. The other puzzle was explained by him, where I did understand but then I selected 'No' to see if he would only repeat it... And he kind of did, but confused himself anyway; I said 'No' again, and he left me unreadable instructions and passed through (dang... I wanted to do that puzzle since it reminded me of those great puzzles from Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time, on the future era). Finally, I managed to somehow solve a puzzle that was intended to be shaped after his face, but it was failed; and then slid on the ice for another one (I actually slid many times on the path after, since you get many shapes on your head and I wanted to know if I earned something, but the shapes just repeated and went on).

-Fighting a really cuuute do--oooOOOH, the heck is THIS?! Another boss? It killed me once or twice, but it wasn't particularly difficult. Toby Fox really has a sense of humor, doesn't he?... I found a blocked path inside a tunnel, so I returned and proceeded right.

-Seeing hidden cameras constantly, which I don't have a clue (up to this day) of why are they there, or who had done that.

Finally, I reached a nice and lively town, whose name I don't remember. I saved there by the end of my session.

Something I've been liking up to this point is the extremely peaceful music. I've also enjoyed the lighthearted humor, although I haven't had a particularly strong laugh yet.

Upon reaching the lively town, I tried talking to everybody at least twice. Everyone had interesting stories to hear. The music is so peaceful, and it has a really nice uplifting tone that could have been even better if it had taken another musical direction, but it gets the job done nonetheless (the one song that stuck with me most to this day, though, was the one from the snowy mountains).

I got into the inn, where I went upstairs and heard some nice snoring. I had a genuine smile upon hearing the monster in the lobby saying something like: "It's amazing how well you slept, considering you were up there for about 2 minutes." It also said that whenever I wanted to recover, I could come back anytime... Something that hasn't been useful just yet, since I kept getting the same message.

I went ahead and got into the store, where I tried talking to a bunny-like monster . She told me some nice background about the town, as well as mentioning the Skelebros making the town even more lively. I bought some stuff, then tried to sell some of my own, but she didn't want to do it. Ok, time to use the box!

I saw a dude throwing big ice cubes to the river, and somebody told me that no one knows were they end up. Huh... (I thought I was going to see them eventually, and I still want to know, unless I'm forgetting something.) I also knocked a door, only to find out the monster in the house wouldn't open after my constant knocking. (I'm kind of getting the feeling that there's some hidden stuff I've been missing on this first playthrough.) I also went into a bar and saw lots of different monsters, including the cute/creepy dog from before. I also stumbled onto a certain messy mailbox, along with another one labeled "Papyrus" which I first didn't want to read -- You realized it could be ilegal. Then I read it: It's empty. LOL. Anyway, I entered Papyrus' place (or was it locked at first...?)

Finally, I went right until I couldn't get any fart and the place gradually turned White. I hadn't saved until then, but Papyrus wanted to fight me. I didn't have an option, so I just battled him. IIRC, I didn't die, but I used some healing items and had a long fight with him, turning my heart blue and jumping over his attacks and mostly succeeding. I had a hard time sparing him, but after flirting with him a good number of times, he fell onto my hot seduction skills, and I managed to spare him entirely. He invited me to his home and gave me his phone number.

So I prepared myself for my hot date with Papyrus...

That's it for now!

correct.

Funny thing; the date can just be a friendship date depending on what you choose after the fight and the game will adapt to that.

(Okay, so, I had to look the following part on YouTube since there were many things I vaguely remembered and wow, I certainly had to do it before proceeding since there was a lot of important information here!)

I went into Papyrus' house and inspected every aspect of it. It was pretty funny seeing the line of post-its on the sock near the TV. A doggy came out of his fridge but I didn't want to catch it at first, so I wondered if I could do it later (I haven't seen it until now, haha). Anyway, I went upstairs and went into his room.

I realized some time after that this date was advertised in the game's description when I bought it -- "You can date a skeleton!" We prepared everything for our moment of intimacy and I was thinking something along the lines of: "Oh boy! We're going to have a (first) date (in his house, in his room!); (on top of that, and after checking out every aspect of his room, I accepted to start our date, and then I thought...) I wonder how this could turn out ANYTHING but sexual. In the end, this is just a family-friendly game, isn't it?" And yes, it was family-friendly... I mean, we couldn't even have our first kiss! I saw a lot of interesting measuring charts... Many of which never served a purpose after all, but they looked flashy. He wore clothes appropriately and I thought he was going to kill me since the music stopped for a moment and he asked me about my clothes, though I told him that it was my plan to date him all along. Finally, he asked me to inspect his body (in a surprisingly non-sexual way) and started from the bottom all the way to the top. He had a thing that I didn't know what was, but it was the aforementioned spaghetti! (Well, I don't actually know if it was the frozen one now that I think about it, but it would be a little mindblowing if it was.) Needless to say, he was overwhelmed by mah rad dating skillz... Until he friend-zoned me and it all went to waste... Although not entirely, since he gave me his phone number. Then I went on my way.

I went right to reach a place with Sans over there, claiming he had two jobs (this reminds me of certain Everybody Hates Chris episode... nevermind). He invited me to Grillby's (I think that's the name?) and sat down. I asked for a burger, so he ordered two for us. Then we started to talk. He asked me about Papyrus, told him he seemed cool (that's a nice thing to say, and I wasn't lying!), asked me if I wanted ketchup, said yes, and it all spilled. Then he asked me a very important question...: "Do you know anything about a talking flower?" I told the truth (Yes), and he told me about the Echo Flowers and about a certain flower talking to his brother. Finally, he left, and I noticed everyone in the bar had a different thing to say this time, a lot of them praising Sans, IIRC. I got out, and something I forgot to mention earlier was the nice, little "LIBRARBY", where I knew there was going to be some useful information, so I payed attention (and I forgot anyways, lol).

Then I went into the caverns. This is where tons of details where scrambled in my memory, and I know many of them are pretty important. I'm gonna leave them for later, though, since this is where I remember ending my daily session.

Upon reaching the caverns, I acquired a hidden tutu, and then got my first glance at Undyne, talking with Papyrus. (Papyrus warned me about a King named Dreemurr, "a pushover". Yeah, I don't buy it. Like, at all.) Undyne looked fearsome. Anyway, I went ahead and did some light puzzles involving sprouting flowers. After receiving a call from Papyrus, in which I told the truth without actually wanting to 'cause I knew I could put myself in extreme danger (I said I had a tutu), I called Papyrus back. Long story short, I realized he said something different every screen, so I tried doing just that, calling him in every screen. I backtracked all the way to the snowy mountains, but I stopped a screen before the town, since I knew I was going to go back here eventually. So I've been calling Papyrus all this time, sometimes getting funny responses, sometimes useful responses, and sometimes no responde at all. I watched a telescope that I didn't understand, so I proceeded.

*calling Papyrus* ... *no response* ... *walks further by the sound of flowing water* ... *BANG*, a spear almost went through me. "Oh no, it's freaking Undyne!" I ran away until I reached a patch of grass (it wasn't a particularly difficult section, but the music and ambience was AWESOME!); then she walked up to me, and I saw something that I'm not sure exactly how horrific it was supposed to be, but... She extended what appeared to be a claw, and nailed a little yellow monster by the eye (*utter silence*), then she left. The monster seemed okay, though; so okay that he literally got excited to the point of not washing its face again. Then I went further.

(End of part 1; tomorrow I'll write part 2)

(Part 2) I found many interesting writings on the walls. Hearing this ominous song with bells has an additional dramatic feeling, which is kind of neat. One of the first writings said: "The power of the human soul allows it to persist even after death". Oh ho ho, biblical references are now being made! Nice... "...However, once monsters are killed, they are turned to dust... But Boss monsters' souls can only persist a few moments after death". Are these the seven souls I've been hearing about? Probably.

I looked at a telescope at Sans' side, showing nothing but red light. I met an ice-cream seller who intruduced me to a certain system in which I could sell ice cream to others, iirc. Then... "What's a star? Can you touch it? Can you eat it? Can you kill it? ... Are you a star?" That's deep man... And cute. Sadly, every answer is no.

I found some ballet shoes, which I put on. Then Papyrus called: "Undyne's opinion of you is a little... murdery" (lol). He said he told Undyne the truth about my outfit, saying that I wasn't wearing it anymore, iirc, and that he wasn't lying while simultaneously keeing me safe, so that way everybody wins (I'm not sure if I actually removed my tutu or shoes, but that's what I got about the dialogue).

I encountered many Echo Flowers until reaching Onion-san. Nice guy... But depressing as well, especially when I can't say anything to the poor guy. I didn't realize about his anime-like expressions until later, which I think was a nice touch. (By this point, I was thinking certain cutscenes or dialogues are hard to follow appropriately because the text is down and the characters are up, so it wasn't so well planned, imo). I then found an abandoned piano, where I played my own melody in the silenced background. My improvisation sounded so beautiful, I thought it was a shame to not have it recorded. But after not having much to do afterwards, I moved on.

Next, I found a statue, and an umbrella on the next screen. Can't remember if I actually put an umbrella over it, but I think I did and it seemed to not have a relevant effect. Either way, I proceeded with my umbrella (and I thought: "Huh... The sprite is glitched: Sometimes you hold it on the right hand and sometimes on the left... Oh, nevermind, it's two different sprites.") until I reached the little monster again. he accompanied me but I went back and put away my umbrella; then I went back to him without an umbrella and he said: "Yo! Where's the umbrella?" So I picked one up again and he accompanied me. "Undyne is so cool! If I were a human, I would wet my bed every morning thinking about her!" Thank you for the motivational comments, you unconscious kid. He told me about King Dreemurr and Undyne's fearsomeness. I walked a long way, passing by the sight of a castle in the where I took a glance a few moments, until I reached a dead end where I had to put my umbrella down. Then I proceeded alone.

Wild armed female hero appeared! She wants to kill you... Again!

I ran away from her spears, going through a maze in which I tried to walk through every possible path in case I found something useful, but it wasn't necessary. I loved the music and the rushing feeling of having to run away and dodge more spears. Even though this section wasn't as difficult as I wished it to be, I tried to make it a little bit more challenging to the point of dying, maybe even a couple of times. Upon reaching the end of the path, I wished I could battle Undyne there, but I wasn't lucky ("darn... I want to fight her already to hear BAaTH! But this looks like it's going to be a near-endgame boss"). She cut the path in which I was standing and the screen turned white. Some nice fellas came to help me, but everything disappeared when I woke up. I saw a lot of trash, and I saved on the nearest star.

I can't really remember, but I think it played a music box melody. I say this because the save point after leaving the kid monster said something about a music box, iirc.

And a tune.

well, you would have gotten something funny if you applied the tune to the piano, but it is optional.

By this point I've thought of 2 things:

1._When I was in the snowy mountains, I thought it would be a good idea to make an NES version of the game. It wouldn't have better instrumentation beyond 8-bit, but it would be a nice port. Which leads me to think: How would this game would have been received 25 years ago?
2._I wish I didn't listen to BAaTH and Hopes and Dreams before playing the game. The former still hasn't showed up, and H&D is the badass musical culmination of borrowed elements, like the intro, the main menu, and... other reference I'm forgetting.

Write up tomorrow.

in my first playthrough I tried to play the regular waterfall bgm on the piano for a while before finding the proper tune, lol

So...

I looked at the garbage piles, checking how many things I could read about them. The only thing that stuck with me was that there were a few brands I recognized, like Pato Pascual, Bimbo and Comex (lol jk). I honked a bike's horn a couple of times, then I opened a... freezer, I think, with some Astronaut Food. Then I stared into a dummy's eyes. "It's a training dummy. Do you want to beat it?" "No." "You've had enough of the dummy."

...

I went on my way, until the dummy acquired a fearsome expression. Then he said something interesting: "I'm a ghost living inside a dummy. My cousin used to live inside a dummy too, until you... Well... You were really boring! So he left as any self-respecting spectre!" "OHHH!! Was this because I spared the original dummy to boredom?! Awesome!" He wanted to fight me. "Is this a boss? I recognize this music from way back on the first ghost fight..." I started to spare him, but I dodged some of his attacks which accidentally hit him. "Oh...! Dynamic, outside-the-box fighting, eh? Nice." I kept hitting him without actually wanting to, so I didn't want to end the battle in a non-Pacifist way. Either way, I died. Many times. I picked the food many times (and honked just for the lulz, as well as looking at an anime disc on the way). It took me a while to reach the part with the fellow dummies shooting missiles, but it was all good from there. I kept dodging their attacks until the dummy got in really bad condition. Then... It grabbed a knife. I got scared since I genuinely thought it was gonna kill itself, but he just threw it at me. Then I won. I guess this doesn't count as a kill... Or at least I hope so.

Another ghost invited me to its house, so I saved afterwards.

(End of part 1; part 2 for later...)

as long as you don't gain EXP it doesn't count as a kill, so you're fine!
and yes that part of Mad Dummy's dialogue changes to account for what you did in the first dummy battle (but he gets mad at you regardless)

(Part 2...)

After defeating the dummy, I explored the different paths offered here. I forgot to call Papyrus from the beginning, but I soon kept calling him every screen around.

I entered the nice ghost's house. "oh, you really came." I listened to his CDs, each having an unusual, "spooky" tone to them (one was clearly a Christmas song); he had some things to comment about every song. (I had to refresh my memory by checking on YouTube, and man, I didn't know the music had effects outside the house! Particularly, I saw an encounter with a Woshua and... the Flex guy.) Anyway, he asked me if I wanted to have invisible food, so I think I ate some, iirc. Then he invited me to lay on the ground and feel like garbage, so I gladly accepted. I layed there for about 30 seconds just to make it more "realistic"; I got up and went on my way. (I realized afterwards that the house at the right was locked.)

I reached an area that had snail races, in which if the yellow one wins, you win. At first I just stood there without doing anything to see what kind of dialogue I would get afterwards. The second time I did exactly the opposite and spammed the Z button until it burst in flames (lol); I actually took a while before spamming Z, so I actually plan to return there to see if I can do something even more extreme. Finally, I tried a couple of times to cheer it periodically, but I didn't succeed at any attempt. "Oh well, maybe for later..." This got me thinking... How are the snails so slow at advancing, yet so quick to return to their initial positioning?

I went back and saw Undyne's house. I knocked; nobody answered. Creepy...

I went left and reached a tiny bird. It wanted me to take me to the other side, so I accepted after saving. That's gotta be single-handedly the most epicly funniest flight I've ever taken; so much, that I wanted to do it again. Maybe I did it two more times by mistake, but the slow-paced flight was worth it.

Finally, I went right, and I reached a shop, in which there was a really old turtle. I talked to him first, and I learned a lot of things, but it was a lot of information that I couldn't remember on a long term. However, he talked about a symbol... A symbol which I somehow never saw despite checking in and out of the shop. (To this day, I don't know which symbol was he talking about.) He also warned me about Undyne and the King Dreemurr. Then I bought some stuff and put them in my box.

I kept walking until I got through a maze of lights and fosforescent mushrooms. It was kind of difficult to explore everything without proper lighting and going through every path trying to reach every mushroom. I went up and saw a suggestive path (it seemed like it was there to advance further), so I went back down. I got into a couple of fights, and finally I reached a cute little town full of doggies--er, temmies. I saved there.
