Well, he asked me when the contest is going to begin. I wasn't able to give him a proper answer to that question because Allen hasn't revealed when the first match of the contest will start. But at least he's aware of the upcoming contest.

Are characters that are not originated in video games now accepted? O_O

They're no longer explicitly disallowed on the nomination form but SBAllen never outright said it - this was probably intentional. We've been sliding towards greater inclusivity for awhile. Hitler from Wolfenstein got into Rivalry Rumble and Dracula from Castlevania got into Character Battle IX on the justification that they are their own characters rather than just being representations of their historic/literary inspirations. We've also gotten an explicit okay for a few characters like the Digimon and Strider Hiryu whose eligibility was once in doubt. Presumably SBAllen didn't want to bar Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher from the character battle but isn't eager to see "Darth Maul and Jane Eyre" overrun the bracket, hence the quiet change.

Just out of curiosity, were there ever any justifications given for allowing Alucard and Amaterasu into the contests back when the "gaming characters only" rule was more strictly enforced? I don't see much of a difference between them and the Hitler/Dracula examples.

Geralt would really be pushing it though, he's very clearly from a book first. there's no "but the Strider manga was a promo for the game" argument anymore, or even "it's not the hitler from real life," Geralt IS from a book and that is pretty widely known

Well, Alucard/Dracula and Amaterasu are definitely in a more gray area than other examples you could name. They're reinterpretations of the mythological/fictional characters they're based on. It's definitely not the same category as a comic book hero.

The Witcher is a game series first when it comes to the user base of gamefaqs.

Goku and Batman never will be, which is probably why allen doesn't want them in I guess.

here's some obscure contest trivia: Jackie Estacado from The Darkness was in the nomination database once because nobody knew it was a comic first. someone pointed it out and he was promptly removed.

which shows allen either doesn't care enough to research which also probably means he doesn't care enough to strictly enforce the rule

I feel like Allen might consider allowing non-game characters in if they got enough nominations from casual users citing specific games rather than contest nerds just trying to get big name pop culture characters in. I really doubt there are any characters not known primarily for games who would be worth much, though. The voters are smart enough to know it's a game character contest and would punish characters who aren't known for their game appearances.

Yeah, he's probably hoping that we don't nominate them by not saying anything about their eligibility. There might be more of a push to get characters like Batman and Goku in if Allen had confirmed they were eligible.
