The only person on the left of the political spectrum in this picture is Bernie. People have no clue what they're talking about when they talk about the "left and right" of the political spectrum. In America, it basically means the left and the right wing of the right wing since Democrats, even Obama, were on the right side of the political spectrum.

Hell, I'd argue that Bernie Sanders is currently the only American mainstream politician right now that is on the actual left side of the political spectrum, and even then he's BARELY on it.

I think he could easily win. The left seems more focused on whining about Russia than fixing their own party. They've essentially drifted right over to neo conservative, and the right's drifted further right to nationalistic militarism. Red caps will get excited for Trump 2020. Nominating another obvious neo con like Hillary will doom the Democrats. I think Bernie will be too old; plus his ideas will have been placed under too much scrutiny to survive the next election cycle.

Biden could win, but after the whole #metoo movement and the objections to Trump's ___ grabbing comments, it would be quite hypocritical to nominate someone who has a well documented history of sniffing and groping women and children. Which is exactly why they'll just go ahead and nominate him anyway....

Ignoring specifics here, if Trump got elected in spite of his own indiscretions, doesn't that mean he's proven that a squeaky-clean moral record is no longer required for the presidency? I fail to see why you're expecting a Democrat to get nailed on this when Trump has done so much shit that's utterly beyond the pale and both got elected and still has an approval rating around 35%.

The bulk of America's "right" is still pretty far left compared to actual rightwing nations. Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, etc, would be perfectly at home on the left side of far-left nations whereas very few people on the America's right would be unquestionably rightwing in a far-right nation. The fact that America is collectively right of Sweden doesn't suddenly make a conservative nation. Even the faux-libertarian branch of the Republican party supports massive social spending and government subsidies.

...because it's nowhere near as serious as people keep trying to insist. And, more than likely, Palin wouldn't have served a second term as VP (because she was trying to attract the conservative base for an initial win) so even if McCain died during his second term then Palin wouldn't be in office.

Granted, Palin's political expertise was about on par with Obama's and a lot of the ridiculous quotes people attributed to her actually came from Tina Fey but American voters couldn't tell the difference.

The bulk of America's "right" is still pretty far left compared to actual rightwing nations.

America is pretty much the most right-wing developed nation in the world and it's not even particularly close. This is true politically, economically, and socially, almost to the point where it's unarguable. Britain is probably the next in line overall, although certain nations are more conservative in one area or another (like Israel and Russia socially, or Costa Rica economically).

This is why, when Democrats lose the election, you hear a lot of melodramatic people talk about "moving to Canada" as a way to escape American conservatism. But when Republicans lose elections? The melodramatic talk isn't about moving somewhere, but seceding from the Union. This is because there's no other developed nation on the planet that's further to the right of the US, so if you want one you'd pretty much have to make your own.

I think you're falsely attributing social services as the *only* demonstration of a nation's political leaning. Otherwise, America *might* be the least authoritarian developed nation, but that's the up/down side of the equation.

Actually, Republicans were ALSO talking about moving to Canada. And Republican or Democrat, moving to Canada makes relatively little sense because you're sacrificing a lot of American amenities which is why *nobody* actually goes through with it. For all of the big talk, American is *still* the most sought-after country in the world and it's not even fucking close.

But that only goes so far.

I mean, Trump has the strongest economy since the 90s working in his favour and his poll numbers are still underwater. He's currently sitting just north of 35-40% - that's lower than any of Obama's approval ratings across his entire presidency, even when unemployment remained stubbornly high and the ACA was considered unpopular. It's actually kind of impressive that Trump has managed to be as unpopular as he is in spite of the booming economy.

More worryingly for Trump, the economy is not registering as an important issue on voters minds at present. The two most pressing issues, as indicated by the polls, are "Corruption" and "Health Care" - that's bad news for Republicans, because Trump polls poorly on both of those subjects.
