That was an easy vote. Though to be fair, I would be equally hyped for an anime about anyone from B8, even if it actually depicted them making a bad topic.

HeroAca S3 episode 24

Ahhhhhhh so much lowkey goodness this episode, Twice's backstory (although I'm not sure if it was as dramatic as I wanted it to be like how I felt from the manga but still, shit's fucked), Overhaul's tease and the Big 3 debut! Wish we got more of them this episode but this episode covered a decent chunk already so I understand.

So as things are winding down my opinion on most shows are pretty much set. This list is in order of airing.

Hanebado
Hanebado is a no fun show. IMO it's a culmination of what someone thinks makes good sports shows good and tries to put it all in a show, but just doesn't get it. The show doesn't build rivals, it spits out enemies. It doesn't develop characters, it just forces personality shifts on them to fit the story. Each match is like something in its own world that has almost no barring for the future. The cast is unlikable, the writing is shaky, and from what I know the actual adaptation even skipped over important things that would have cleared some of this stuff up.

Miss Caretaker of Sunohara-sou
I would say this is most like a guilty pleasure show, but I also think it does a lot right. It has a lot of the basic character types you get in a typical harem anime, but it's not a harem which actually makes a lot of the awkward type moments you get in those that often seem tired in those, actually have some decent life in this show. There has not been a lot of real good cute comedy in the past two seasons (have to go back to the start of the year where moe was at its highest) and I think this really does the job well. It's 100% a niche show but it fits it very well. The cast, while generic, is fun to watch and the show doesn't take itself as something its not.

How not to Summon a Demon Lord
In terms of overall fan service this pretty good overall. It has a good balance in the type of girls in it too which is nice. I also liked how they don't really dwell too much on this being an isekai and instead use that simply to give quick explanations on why Diabalo knows some of the things he does. The show itself is nothing special though and while it's enjoyable enough doesn't have the same cast level as other good fan service shows. Like each of the girls are fine, but they are basically "do you like plot or justice?" rather than being good characters.

Chio's School Road
First off, Chio has dat ass. In any case this is a good comedy that is in a year that is full of good comedy. Overall I think the season was kind of up and down a bit but generally each episode is pretty solid. Some of the skits they did were great, like Kabaddi or the entire Chio makeover. I do think the show is somewhat carried by Chio as I don't really care much for the rest of the cast overall. I really enjoyed Chio's entire thing about being a real life video game assassin type character in her head. I think in like the early to mid of the run this was the funniest show of the season. While I'm not sure it ended that way, I do think Chio herself has turned into one of the best leads of the season.

Music Girls
This anime clearly has like no budget. Music Girls is a by the numbers idol show where the main character would be an amazing idol if she didn't have less singing talent than a pre autotuned Rebecca Black. Instead she becomes the manager. I honestly think that the people working on this show legitimately tried to do the best job possible with what they were given. I do think a big thing is that when we get to the predicted end of season drama that has to be in these shows, it doesn't really seem forced as it lays obvious groundwork for the trouble that they would face later on. I also think that Hanako is a very fun character and having her as the manager over making her part of the group was a great choice overall. Is this a good show? No, honestly this is like idolmaster super light, and I do think the show trailed off greatly at the end. But I also think it's something that just needed a little more work.

Harukana Receive
This year another show, Horse Girl or whatever it was aired and I want to compare that to this one. While I do think this show is better overall I do think it suffers a similar issue where as a "sports" show I don't really get that feeling where I'm really invested in any of the matches. Take shows like Haikyuu or Chihayafuru where each match is just edge of your seat intense because of directing and due to them building up the characters to make you even more invested. I do think this show does a decent job at character development overall, but it never reaches that point where I'm excited for the volleyball. Like while Horse Girl was about the moe first and the racing second this is 100% about the fan service first and the volleyball second. So lets talk about the fan service. Unlike demon lord, the fan service here is not the ecchi kind but more the a bunch of girls in bikinis all the time with some advantageous camera angles. I actually really like the designs overall in this anime and from like a pure attractiveness factor this probably has the best looking girls of the season overall. But that's still not really enough to pull it up from being just a pretty okay show imo. Keijo, another fan service sports type show proved you can both have your fan service and sports type action that makes you invested in the outcome.

Banana Fish
This is one of the few shows airing that will have episodes in the future. TBH I don't like it nearly as much as I did early on when it was pushing for best new show. I think some of the character development has been a little iffy and I'm finding it hard to get invested in the plot right now. I still think it's a good show, but something that is going to have to pick it up next season if it wants to avoid MAPPAs track record of pushing out disappointments.

Seven Senses of the ReUnion
This is an amazon prime show that like no one realizes exists. It's kind of a cross between SAO and Ano Hana. It manages to avoid the dumb pitfalls those shows had though which gave me hope that maybe this would not be awful. While I don' think it's awful it does suffer from several problems. The main one being that they just take too long to do anything. They dwell on like one plot point for the entire season and just don't get anywhere with it. They take too long for the main cast to really get together too. I do think that some of the character stuff they do, while a decent attempt, is just stretched out too much to fill in a lack of actual content.

Cells at Work
While I don't think this is like quite as good as the early episodes had it slated for, I do think this is one of the best shows of this season. I think the real main downfall is that it doesn't really do enough to really make the characters stick with you besides very simple gimmicks related to their real life body functions. That's not to say that Red Blood Cell and White Blood Cell are not great, but Cells at Work doesn't really have the comedy level to make up for what the show lacks overall either. Still an excellent anime though and one you should 100% watch if you're like one of the 3 people in the world who hasn't yet.

Asobi Asobase
IMO Asobi Asobase stands apart in a season full of good comedy. It might be the best physical humor anime I've ever seen. Now where it stands among this year in terms of comedy is a different thing, but the sketches in this show were hilarious. This has a legitimate chance at comedy of the year (or would if Takagi-san didn't also air and pretty much as that locked up for me).

Phantom in the Twilight
I never expect anything from these reverse harem shoujo otome style shows with like supernatural powers. I mean look at this crap like Vampire Knight, and Diabolik Lovers. Even something like Dance with Devils (which showed a little promise early on) ended up being really bad. This though... is not bad. I'm not sure if it's good but it manages to actually have a cast that is pretty fun and a main girl who manages to stand on her own as a character rather than rely on the rest of the cast for her entire development.

Revue Starlight
Barring a disaster of a last episode this is the best new show of the season. The overall production is great, the cast is diverse and entertaining, the soundtrack is the best of the year. Not only that but the overall use of the music is amazing too. This is a show that is 100% worth an entry into hidive for.

Grand Blue
This is a pretty funny show with a mild amount of fans service for both genders. While I do laugh quite a bit at this I've found it difficult to really care beyond "it's funny".

High Score Girl
While this got off to a rough start I think this has shaped up to be one of the best shows of the season. I'm really impressed with the way the handle character dynamics between the mains, especially when one of them (Ono) like never talks. I'm also impressed with the level of which they portray what people perceived gaming culture to be like as the show progresses throughout time. I think people forget that it was not that long ago where being a gamer was looked at quite differently and how the way information got out about games was also very different and I also think the way the characters progress themselves kind of shows the evolution of that changing. I do think that a lot of the good in this show is more subtle and might be lost on viewers who have not experienced what the show is portraying first hand, but I think this has been great.

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Spring
This is another fan service style show where I think the actual fan service is a little on the light ecchi side (versus full on ecchi as in demon lord) and overall not quite as much as in like Harukana. Where this show excels is simply being a cute comedy romance with minor character development overall and focusing on comedic episodes versus trying to do a lot of other things. While this is not going to put it in any GOAT level anime it does mean it has manged to stay consistently enjoyable.

Attack on Titan Season 3
I do think the early episodes and such with all the political stuff and things just kind of happening were pretty dumb. But it did bring it back and has manged to really boost of Krista's character to a level I didn't know was possible for what was a minor side character.

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi
One of the returning shows. Pretty much still one of the best shows airing. Great art work, wonderful set pieces, just a feel good type anime.

Steins;Gate 0
This is anime of the year and it's not really close.

Finished three airing anime today, from worst to best:

The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar was pretty damn bad. I'm not the biggest fan of harem fanservice shows in general, but, even leaving that aside, I could still tell that this was one of the worse examples of the genre. I felt like the girls barely had a character beyond their relation to the generic main dude and their desire to please him. In a standard SoL harem show that might not be as much of a problem, but the other half of this anime was about war and politics where these characters probably should have mattered. It managed to consistently screw that whole aspect up too. The strategic wars might have been okay if the situations were realistic, but enemy states would bounce back from resounding defeats with new armies pulled out of thin air and nothing anyone did seemed to have any real consequences. It never reached the hilariously stupid lows of Record of Grancrest War from earlier this year, but Ragnarok still wasn't any good. One of the ten worst anime I've finished, 1/10.

Music Girls was a whole lot better than that! It was definitely no Love Live, but for the budget it had and the fact that it needed to characterize twelve characters in twelve episodes, it was fine. I liked the unique perspective of Hanako being a staff member rather than an idol, and a bunch of the main cast was fun. It also dealt with challenges I haven't seen other idol anime touch on, like one of the idols gasp being photographed in the vicinity of a man and causing a PR stir. There were some dumb drama moments and it would've been a million times better with higher production values, but this was still a decent anime. I rank it just below average at 5/10.

And lastly, Chio's School Road was good! The way that Chio and Manana interacted, comfortably shitting on each other, was hilarious and realistic to a lot of my own close friendships. There were two episodes that I felt were a significant step down compared to the rest, but otherwise I actually thought the humor was pretty consistent and enjoyable. The side characters all held their own during their various skits and Chio was a solid core to all of them with her gamer logic and awesome Satania voice. It didn't quite manage to hold onto the distinction of being my favorite comedy anime of the season, but I still rank it a comfortable 7/10.
