Doesnt matter what theyve done to help progress society or how proud of themselves they are. People just love insulting others to make them feel better.

I am a belittlee

Therefore, belittlers may belittle me.

This is because it requires effort to become better, while it is easy to tear others down. The most vocal people tend not to be do-ers. You'll find there's much less of this in places where people can be directly shamed for complaining about nonsense. Seems like the less people have to complain about, the more things they do.

This is true, but if you made me choose between belittling another person and eating a soft pretzel, I would choose the pretzel almost every time.

It takes less effort to put others down than it does to pull oneself up.

A total shit way of living and thinking because you (generalized you) become your own undoing and most often, blind to the fact as to why you're now the way you are. You may feel better than others, but you really haven't moved in years.

It's also easier to try to control others than to let them be themselves.

It's a facet of cultural socialization, and part of what makes us human in the first place.

Like it or not, social norms are constructed via consensus, and things like guilt, shame, and embarrassment are used to enforce said norms and maintain the social contract. We have an instinct to mock (or worse) those who are different from what we think people should be with the assumption that doing so will force them to conform.

Success often excuses eccentricity, but most of the time the nail that stands up is going to get the shit hammered out of it.

We cover it up with wood putty.

I like that a lot actually, but I'm assuming the classic/original answer is that it splits the wood, right?
