If you want to say where the line is; Yoshi still consistently has non-cameo appearances in mainline Mario games, whereas Donkey Kong and Wario do not.

I mean I still see Wario as a Mario character just because he's named after him but I would say it's reasonable to say he's separate. Yoshi still can't get away though.

Also, technically Mario Bros. is a spinoff of the Donkey Kong series, so they're all part of his universe, which is linked to Banjo-Kazooie, which is linked to Sonic the Hedgehog, which is linked to Danica Patrick, who is a real person so in actuality we are all a spinoff of Donkey Kong.

Hard to say... I haven't played it.

As far as my canon rules go there's a difference between crossovers where it's like "Hey, we both turn out to randomly exist in the same universe" and ones where it's "we took a interdimensional portal and wound up in this universe". So Archie and The Punisher are in the same universe, but not Superman and Bugs Bunny.

I'll keep my thoughts super simple as to not drag it into this topic:

A character is a "____ character" of whatever series people will recognize them most from, not counting mashups like Smash Bros. Shadow has his own game, but a vast majority of people still recognize him as a Sonic character. Wario has WarioWare, but most people recognize him from Mario games. Same with Yoshi. Most people do not recognize Donkey Kong as a Mario character, so he's basically the line where he's still his own thing despite appearing in a bunch of Mario spin-offs. So to me...

1. If your solo games haven't gotten big enough to where most people recognize you for those over the original series
and/or
2. If your solo game appearances are vastly outnumbered by your appearances in the original series

then I still consider the character as part of that series. Yoshi's mainline Mario appearances match or outnumber the number of Yoshi games, total, and a majority of people still recognize Wario from Mario Party/Kart/Sports/etc., so I see nothing wrong with counting them as "Mario characters." There's nothing saying they can't be both, but saying "They're not Mario characters" is kinda silly.

Yeah, Wario is more like Donkey Kong, they exist in the same universe, but they do their own thing outside of kart/sports/party. He's a Wario character first and a Mario character second at best.

Yoshi still hangs out with Mario on a semi-consistent basis. There was a time where Nintendo may have planned to separate him during the mid-90s and you could argue they are trying again now, but at this point he's still a Mario character with a bunch of side games.

I think they're definitely Mario characters, but it's okay to count them toward their own series for Smash.

You could easily make a Smash Bros. game filled solely with Mario characters and it would be pretty damn fun.

Wario is definitively not. He only has one appearance in the Super Mario series (other than SM64DS, which was a remake), Super Mario Land 2, and the rest are in spinoffs or his own series, similar to Mario relative to Donkey Kong.

Yoshi is borderline since he is probably more commonly associated with his own series, but has also been in almost every Super Mario game since his debut. He's like Luigi basically, and I believe is in as many mainline Super Mario games since Super Mario World. I would say Yoshi is a Mario character with his own series.

Wario is in the Mario & Sonic series under the Team Mario banner. Surely he didn't just do this out of the kindness of his heart. Mario claimed him.
