It's the morning, so let's knock out two more real quick.

====================================================

190:

Song name - Rage Awakened
Song origin - Kingdom Hearts 2.5 ReMIX Remastered OST
Song link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g29X3YcZquo" data-time="

Nominator: Murphiroth (14/15)

What is up with the abrupt end on this video? The song doesn't end or fade out, the video just stops mid-note. Also, not the fault of the song itself, but I prefer the 8-bit remix uploaded by Orohu:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INwpyNWA_e4" data-time="

The retro style sound would go a long way towards making this nomination stand out from the pack. As it stands, the only 8-bit track is the Ironsword Theme & there are very few songs even remotely in that style.

Putting aside "what could have been" and looking at the actual music, it's...alright. It doesn't do anything wrong and it works well enough for a boss theme, but it's nothing I'd choose to listen to.

[FINAL NOTES: Nothing else to add. The song remains as okay as it was the first three times I heard it.]

====================================================

[EDIT: Oh, if it matters, I have played most KH games released in English. I've missed re:Coded and any cell phone games, but gone through all of the others, often multiple times. I'm not sure I've really noticed the non-Disney Movie music in any of them and as much as I love the series, I'm not really inspired to discuss the games or Xemnas.]

Probably not much of a surprise after Allegro Con Fuoco's ranking. It's nice enough and I like the brief bit that focuses on the xylophone, if only because xylophone music is uncommon, but... that's about it, I can't even think of anything to say for the write-up.

[FINAL NOTES: Perhaps ironically, that write-up is both longer and more on topic than the vast majority of write-ups to come in this topic. #ILearnedNothingFromWordCrimes ]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: This was originally much closer to ACF's placement, hence the direct reference. Upon realizing that I did like parts of this, it jumped up a few places at the last minute.]

Third, don't expect quality write-ups. Multiple songs only get one word and those with longer write-ups tend to only be tangently related to whatever the original topic was. For example, at the Mega Man Song Ranking Topic, one write-up for a Classic Mega Man song devolved into a "why I hate Thin Lizzy and their fans frighten me" speech and I have no idea how I got onto that topic. It seemed to make sense at the time?

...not that you should expect write-ups to go that random either. There are no standards or quality control, nor any attempt to force random insanity. I just typed whatever I wanted to. *shrugs*

No.

[FINAL NOTES: ...Still no.]

[EVEN MORE FINAL NOTE: It's just a coincidence this song got ranked immediately after Conception, but I am amused by the result of the shortest write-up following the self-deprecating note that shorter write-ups were coming up. </.<]

[FINAL-EST NOTE: If I must talk about the song itself, I fear this is another one that loses something without context. I get that this is a much improved version of Kuze's theme because PLOT, but I have only the vaguest grasp on who that is and have no particular interest in learning anything further about the series. And while the song is pretty enough, it's too...normal/traditional and doesn't do enough to escape my bias against it. And while I'd probably move it higher if I were being objective, I'm not, and here we are.]

Song name - Lady Maria
Song origin - Bloodborne DLC OST
Song link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mByDcrNSV0" data-time="

Nominator: Murphiroth (12/15)

Never played Bloodborne, much less its DLC, so I have no idea who Maria is. Unfortunately, the chanting just feels like generic "RPG trying too hard to be epic" battle music, that it feels like something I've heard a thousand times before. It does nothing to excite me or distinguish itself as a unique experience. It just adds itself to the pile of assorted background songs I've heard before, fading from my memory before the song even ends.

[FINAL NOTES: Wow, that was overly harsh. The song isn't my thing, but I don't have any particularly negative feelings about it.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: ...Though in retrospect, I do think I have this about four places higher than I'd like it.]

====================================================

Four songs in a row is a bit much, but I'm just going to get the more deranged write-up out of the way and quickly follow it with a normal one, as I pretend the write-up to song #186 never happened.

You are advised to equally pretend the following didn't happen.

No it isn't. </topic>

Time passes.

You have the distinct feeling that you should just stop reading the post now and move on to the next ranking; for starters, it's doubtful she has anything of relevance to say. Also, the fact that she's slipped into a second person narration is likely not a good sign. Normal people don't narrate the thoughts and actions of people in their topic, like it suddenly turned into a horrible CYOA or RP session.

Time continues to pass. Something inside you warns you that this is probably your last chance to get away from the insanity and that you should definitely be running away.

...As you wait for something to happen, you find yourself starting to lose consciousness.

"You're still here? Seriously?"

As you regain your focus, you quickly notice that everything has changed. You are now standing in a generic, grassy field at night. The only illumination comes from the full moon overhead, and a suspiciously out-of-place desktop computer off to the side.

Directly in front of you, there's an...anthropomorphic bunny dressed in a bright red ninja outfit? She's quite small, though you obviously have no frame of refence on how large humanoid rabbits should be.

"The NES Ninja Gaiden had a great intro cutscene, didn't it! Though I'm not entirely sure why we're here... I've never really had any interest in dressing as a ninja, in this world or any other."

As you question how it's possible for her to not understand what's going on in her own fantasy world, you deeply regret not having left when you had the chance.

"Either way, I think you should watch the video on that computer! We're not going to be able to discuss my thoughts on the song I'm ranking if you don't have the proper context."

Glancing over at the computer, you notice that a certain YouTube video is already loaded and waiting for you to play it. You realize that, for the first time this topic, the bunny is waiting for your decision and actually offering you some choices.

Go watch the video...

"It's an extended version of a song from the first Bill & Ted Movie!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upWj-RrKnIQ" data-time="

"Ya see, I think this song does, well, everything better than "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" to be quite frank with you. They're both cheesy songs about how things will be fine, but...

One: This extended version is clearly a labor of love. The version in the movie had a guitar intro that wasn't part of any released version of the song, so a dedicated fan spent forever studying the scene to try and perfectly recreate it. This version of the song is something you can't get anywhere else, being better than the commerically released version.

Two: It doesn't repeat "everything's gonna be alright" nearly as often. It does repeat the sentiment quite a bit, yes, but the nominated song might actually be even more repetitive than "Coming Down".

Three: It doesn't drag on for seven and a half minutes. "Everything's Gonna Be Alright"'s final verse ends at around 2:50, leaving the vast majority of the song as a repetitive outro that feels like it will never end.

The bunny has to pause for a minute and divide this into multiple posts due to GameFAQs limitations...

Continue watching the video...

Four: I know everyone is going to hate me for this, but shouting "Killing us dead, Black lives don't matter" kinda negates any hypothetical good feelings of the song. It's like "don't worry about all the problems of the world, everything's fine... BLACK PEOPLE ARE BEING SLAUGHTERED BY THE POLICE AND YOU AREN'T HELPING... seriously though everything's fine, tee hee!" ; is the song supposed to be ironic? One of those that makes you think it's a happy song, then you finally notice the lyrics and realize how incredibly soul-crushing it actually was?

I do support the movement, I acknowledge that this is a problem that needs to be discussed, and I'm horrified by all the attempts on the right to portray "stop murdering black people" as a controversial stance. I can even kinda see the point of adding it to this sort of song (you wanted to be happy and have fun without worrying about the reality of police brutality? Yeah, about that...), but it renders it unable to function as a Feel Good song.

Five: This is just way too serious of a topic to deal with in this topic. I...don't know if I'd call it more serious than all the songs about suicide that was nominated (seriously, I'm now worried about some of you), but my write-ups tend to be goofy and weird. I can't really do that with this sort of topic..."

She looks around at the bizarre environment and sighs

"At least, I wasn't supposed to... that's not to say there are no serious songs that I like, but it's rather arbitrary which ones I connect with and I don't have time in this write-up to get into it, considering how wildly off-track this has already gotten.

Six: Bill & Ted are awesome and references to Bill & Ted are also awesome.

So... yeah. Like I said in "Coming Down"'s miniscule write-up, I'm very hard-pressed to enjoy any song that just endlessly repeats itself. And I don't want to have these type of serious discussions. And frankly, I'm pretty sure you don't want me to have these discussions either. Has anything in this write-up given you the impression that I'm normal enough to have an opinion worth considering on this topic?

Well, whatever. It's a song I would have never heard without this topic, so I appreciate the chance to listen to it. Enjoy the rest of your day!"

You find yourself returning to the real world, safe from all this stupidity.

"Oh, by the way... don't click the other option! It doesn't end well..."

Refuse to watch the video...

Song Name: Good Girl
Song Origin: Carrie Underwood
Song Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-uothzTaaQ" data-time="

Nominator: Snake5555555555 (13/15)

I've actually heard quite a few Carrie Underwood songs. I'm not entirely sure why, but I briefly made an attempt to follow the careers of a few American Idol contestants (her, Adam Lambert, some other guy...Josh something-or-other, I don't even care to look him up as he was basically just a second-rate Adam Lambert.)

Honestly, I'm not sure why I listened to her. I can't actually name a song of hers that I highly enjoy (Blown Away is mildly amusing as I do like a good revenge song, but the child abuse makes it difficult to laugh about using a natural disaster as a murder weapon).

Anyway, I've always been bothered by the first verse of this song:

I bet you I can tell you
What youre thinkin' about
You'll see a good boy
Gonna give you the world
But hes gonna leave you cryin'
With your heart in the dirt

So the "good girl" is only thinking about seeing a boy? So Carrie Underwood is determined to destroy a hypothetical relationship? I'm probably missing something, but then, I don't like this song enough to look into it any further.

[FINAL NOTES: James Durbin is who I was trying to think of, not Josh anyone. Apparently James is now the lead singer of Quiet Riot, so I guess things are working out rather well for him.]

[FINAL NOTES: I'm not sure what the cut off is on a song repeating the same line before I tune out. Evidently it is less than this song's 16 times. I may want to see something else by this band, eventually; I'm amused that one of the attempts to explain the lyrics declares that they are "predictably convoluted" and it's not like anything about the song is bad, but this particular song does nothing for me.

First off, I kinda wish you went with one of the more modern versions of the intro, like this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNkvxqGmscY" data-time="

The extra instruments and what not improve the song so drastically that it's not even fair to compare them. ...also, unrelated, but YouTube just started playing an incredibly amazing remix of the Jepoardy Theme:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSLyrOtm9FE" data-time="

It's just different enough to be exciting and new, while still being very familiar. I actually want to hear more of this person' work (and actually did stop writing this to go play a couple tracks).

Which, I suppose says everything. With barely any effort at all, I've found multiple versions of the Jeopardy theme that utterly destroy this one, rendering it rather irrelevant. I guess it works if you're nostalgic for a very specific timeframe where this was the music used, but... well, long story short, I'm not.

[FINAL THOUGHTS: That Jeopardy remix would have had a decent shot at reaching the top 20... I'm unsure how far the modern version of the theme would have gotten; not anywhere near that high, but several steps beyond this.]

"if you kept [the song] exactly the same but changed the instrumentation... it's a post hardcore song."

OH COME ON. Is there anything on this planet that is NOT post hardcore? I feel like I could turn on a randomly selected 50s pop song and find some commentor explaining that it really set the foundation for post hardcore music.

....I'm not even sure I'm exagerating anymore.

*decides to Google "50s Pop Songs" and check a YouTube video of whatever the fourth listed song is.*

"Standing On The Corner" by The Four Lads.

...Well, I was happier before listening to that, but no one has tried finding any way to connect it to hardcore anything, so that's...something.

*coughs*

Anyway, this song isn't bad and I wouldn't mind hearing a bit more of her work. YouTube started playing "Anything" automatically and I have no real complaints about it--bit too repetitive, but I love whatever that...beep-y instrument is in the background, so I can't complain about it. I'm not sure how far it would have gone. My first instinct is "about the same as this song", but having only heard it once and without trying to have a strong opinion on it, I may be undervaluing it.

[FINAL NOTES: The problem with typing up thoughts and then shuffling songs around is that you wind up with write-ups like this. The running gag of "Post Hardcore" had been going on for a while by the time I did this write-up, but this song kept falling down the rankings... so now you get the rage against Post Hardcore music before hearing what song started the whole joke.]

====================================================

(Prom, continued)

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Okay, a few extra notes.

1.While "post hardcore" becomes a gag, at no point does the joke impact any song's placement for better or worse, and it's intentionally exagerated for comedic effect. Though there is some truth in the frustration that it felt like every single band I'd look up would suddenly be post hardcore, no matter how different they all were, as though that were the only genre that ever existed.

2.What this song falls victim to are two things that other songs on this list also get hit by: I feel it repeats itself too often ("a little bit" comes up 12 times during the song, particularly six times in rapid succession during each pre-chorus) and the artist was too honest in explaining what things meant.

There was a good theory that the song was called Prom because it was a Broken Promise. Ya know, symbolism and what not. But she set the record straight:

"Iss called prom cus I ain't have no friends in high school so I went to Miami w my mama for prom instead . Lol"

At which point, I no longer cared about the song. If the artist herself is going to dismiss the concept of any symbolism or meaning with a "Lol", then I'm going to be equally dismissive of the song.

I know it's difficult, but sometimes you have to leave some mystery to your art; I talk a bit more about this subject at the next song to suffer in the rankings due to it, but take American Pie.

"When asked what "American Pie" meant, McLean jokingly replied, "It means I don't ever have to work again if I don't want to." Later, he stated, "You will find many interpretations of my lyrics but none of them by me ... Sorry to leave you all on your own like this but long ago I realized that songwriters should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence.""

The mystery and debate surrounding the song has led to it still being discussed over four decades later. He understood that the best thing he could do for the music was to step away and let it take on a life of its own. And you'll probably argue that she only ruined the title of her song, not all of the lyrics, which...yeah, that's probably fair, but I will always argue that it was still a bad move on her part.]

Also too repetitive, but I vastly prefer her voice over the singers of "Break Thru" & "Coming Down".

[FINAL NOTES: Ouch, that was just mean and she didn't deserve that. Even so, this song just barely fails to escape being in the bottom 10%.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: While repeating "I can't rewind" 17 times put this song at a large disadvantage, it's not like many other songs on the list... I think it should have gotten a bonus for being unique and bumped up to... somewhere between 166 and 170. Not a tremendous boost, but enough that it would have escaped the bottom 10% by a decent amount.

Alas, I stopped arranging songs after the fourth trip through the entire list, so it stays down here.]

Iceman & CPU are in the best position, having 15 nominations and all of them remaining in play.

While neither of his songs have dropped, azuarc is in the most vulnerable position, having only two songs to his name.

Murphiroth is currently not doing too well, losing four similar VGMs in rapid succession. Perhaps thankfully for him, none of his remaining nominations are similar to the eliminated songs, so there's still a chance to turn things around.

Se7en was sure the GameCube intro would be his worst song; Murphiroth was sure the Goblins would have fallen by now. There's a lesson in there about the futility of trying to predict my thought processes.

Yes, yes I do. I blame a horrible song (most likely from the 50s or 60s) that I'm pretty sure only had the lyrics "I love you".

I love you
You
You~
You~
You~
You~
You~
You~

You~
You~
You~
You~

And that song would play constantly, just echoing the same word, over and over and over again. For years. An unending repetition from which there was no escape.

...I've had a fairly low tolerance for repetition since then.

A good attempt, but Toonami Midnight Run played a lot of Daft Punk songs and I have quite a bit of nostalgia for that brief predecessor to Adult Swim. It certainly wouldnt have done well, but all the positive memories associated with Daft Punk might have carried it further than youd think.

Multiple people comment that this feels like a 60s song, but I'm not hearing it. This feels like a current song, which it is; I guess I could see a song like this coming from the 90s, but even that's pushing it.

Song is alright, but it feels too much like a standard pop-ish song to hold my attention for long.

[FINAL NOTES: I have nothing further to add.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: I don't know why, but this is somehow one of the hardest songs for me to remember. If I don't have a note, lyric, or image from the video to jog my memory, then there's just nothing there when I try to recall the song; even after six listens, it has failed to leave any impressions. Just now, when I tried to remember it so I could type up more thoughts, I thought of:

Two unrelated songs from this ranking that haven't been eliminated yet and will go unnamed
Prom, which was already eliminated and clearly not right
Fabulous from High School Musical 2
Shiny from Moana

And while I knew I was getting progressively further from the actual song, I honestly had no clue what it was. As soon as I clicked the video and saw the hotel, it all came back, but I still needed something to help me.

Not to say it isn't a good song, it obviously is, but it's apparently not for me at all.]

I want to like this, but I feel like it should be....crazier. The title invokes holes in the fabric of reality itself, but nothing in the song conjures up those sorts of images. In fact, I think "Hell By Any Other Name" would work better with this name ; it just feels more ominous and chaotic, and appropriate, than the song we actually have here.

...I mean, I'm not actually going to drop its ranking for not being as good as Hell, but it certainly doesn't help its placement.

[FINAL NOTES: Sorry, but this is yet another song that I just don't get. I've tried quite a few times, but I just don't.]

Well thats exactly what you said it was alright. I think it would almost definitely be somewhere in the bottom five, but theres always the off chance that it would grow on me after repeated listens or that a combination of being unique & nostalgic would get it slightly higher.

you'd probably like justice better than daft punk. they're like daft punk if daft punk wouldn't beat a motif into the ground for 7 consecutive minutes.

They seem like they have potential. Briefly skimmed them on YouTube; Genesis wasn't bad--not great, but it did a few things I liked. Wasn't as into DVNO, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had a song I loved if I tried listening to some more.

But for now, let's crush some more dreams.

On the one hand, it is definitely different and I give it a lot of credit for that.

On the other hand, when the first translation of the lyrics I find contains the line "Slutty full-blown suicide", I'm just....not gonna listen to the song voluntarily. Like, ever.

The second translation offered was "Ultimate, chaotic suicide" which is better, but still a bit much for my taste. Add in a video that's too disturbing to be shown uncensored and I'd be content never seeing this again... but it certainly is different, so I'm quite grateful for the nomination itself.

[FINAL NOTES: I had this ranked about 15 spaces higher originally by virtue of being different, then decided that if I truly never wanted to hear or see anything related to this song ever again, that it should probably be lower than it was. It's not at the absolute bottom as uniqueness gives it some boost, just not as much as I had given it on the first two drafts of the list.]

Oops, wrong song. </.<

I'm afraid I have no reaction to the actual song at all. It's not bad. a thousand times better than "Little Red Wagon" and a fair bit better than "Good Girl", but there's nothing in the music or lyrics to overcome my natural bias against the genre.

[FINAL NOTES: At the time this was written, I was quite positive Wagon was going to come in last place. I think there's onw other write-up that directly references Little Red Wagon as being the worst song, obviously written before I started laughing at it and moving it back up the list.

I am a bit surprised I didn't connect to this song at all. I do like a good vengeance song and the last verse has some great lines, but the anti-country bias was evidently too strong for this song to get very far.

...Also, I'm slightly angry that whoever set up her bandcamp page for this song decided to compare her to Johnny Cash. The song is tagged with "dark country", "gothic country", "johnny cash"... seriously, come on.]

[FINAL-ER NOTE: I believe that marks the first Community reference? I'm not sure how many of them I wound up making throughout the entire list.]
