On the one hand, it is definitely different and I give it a lot of credit for that.

On the other hand, when the first translation of the lyrics I find contains the line "Slutty full-blown suicide", I'm just....not gonna listen to the song voluntarily. Like, ever.

The second translation offered was "Ultimate, chaotic suicide" which is better, but still a bit much for my taste. Add in a video that's too disturbing to be shown uncensored and I'd be content never seeing this again... but it certainly is different, so I'm quite grateful for the nomination itself.

[FINAL NOTES: I had this ranked about 15 spaces higher originally by virtue of being different, then decided that if I truly never wanted to hear or see anything related to this song ever again, that it should probably be lower than it was. It's not at the absolute bottom as uniqueness gives it some boost, just not as much as I had given it on the first two drafts of the list.]

Huh, didn't think this would be the lowest ranked out of my nominations.

And oddly enough this isn't even the most graphic video or song from this band!

I don't have too much experience with SNK fighting games. I remember playing a Fatal Fury on the Genesis, KoF 99 on the Dreamcast briefly (not much single player content), two Samurai Shodown games, the crossovers with Capcom, and most games released for the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Yes, I actually owned an NGPC and quite a few games for it. That machine was AMAZING. The thumb stick was perfectly designed for fighting games and even 360 motions were a snap to pull off. There were hardly any games, but what they did have had a lot of heart put into them. Their SNK VS Capcom game was simply beautiful: A lot of characters, several minigames, multiple modes of fighting (1-on-1, Tag Battles, and KoF-style team battles)... they pushed that little system as far as they possibly could and I still love it.

The King of Fighters R2 was pretty interesting too. A single-player mode with a plot, cutscenes, and you could equip items & skills on your character? You just don't see that type of thing in many fighting games. Unfortunately, I can't find the intro cutscene to the single player mode, as I remember it being hilariously Engrish-y.

Either way, I don't have much nostalgia for the King of Fighters series itself. Having only played one title in the main series, and only briefly, I'm not too familiar with it. And while this song is nice enough, it's not really amazing or doing much to elevate itself beyond the category of "random fighting background music".

[FINAL NOTES: Actually it is better than I seem to be giving it credit for.]

And one song, in which I talk about everything except the song I'm supposed to talk about.

====================================================

175:

Song: Garfield and Friends Theme Song
Origin: Garfield and Friends
Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIPRFitgIc4" data-time="

Nominator: Se7enthrust (8/10)

A unique choice. I praise the attempt to get some cartoon animals into this, but wonder how you wound up at this one; the obvious choice is anything Disney related: Besides the obvious Disney Afternoon themes, most of which actually have full versions, Gummi Bears is also an interesting optiton.

Moving beyond Disney, the original Ninja Turtles is...well, too obvious of a choice, and typically impossible to find on YouTube (though you can find links elsewhere without much effort), but still classic ; anything Care Bears or Chipmunks related would be terrific--I think I may have actually heard more Chipmunks & Chipettes albums than albums by every other artist combined and I'm not joking.

And if we really had to go with a fat orange cat, then Heathcliff is obviously superior musically. Not in terms of show quality, good lord is Heathcliff boring as heck, but it's almost worth watching for the intro alone.

But if we truly had to go with Garfield, then why not the more obscure "Friends Are There" intro?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQllBwL8gZc" data-time="

The cheesy lyrics about friendship pair well with your other friendship song, the "Just Say No" joke at the end synergizes with the Trivial Pursuit theme, and it has a few slightly clever bits.

Friends are there
I don't care
But friends will care for youuu~

Is kinda funny. Also the way the singers struggle to hold the final u until the end of the song, practically screaming when Booker finally rushes off-screen so they can relax? Also mildly amusing.

...well it probably wouldn't have been enough to get the song any higher on the rankings, but it at least provides more talking points.

*coughs*

So, Garfield. I'm not really a fan of actual Garfield. "Garfield Minus Garfield" was funny for a while, Square Root of Minus Garfield can be funny at times (though it has made me regret never trying a pudding pop in my life), but official Garfield comics & cartoons? Ehhh....not so much.

[FINAL NOTES: Whoa, I never knew there was a third intro song used for the seventh season:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8myPFO8yd4E" data-time="

"Double rabble babble, he's a cat and I know that."

That is one of the worst cartoon theme songs I have ever heard. And I've seen the intro to Pickle and Peanut.]

[EVEN MORE FINAL NOTES: Well now you've done it. Now that I've heard three Garfield songs, YouTube is convinced that I must hear them all and my suggested videos are hell. It just gave me "The Garfield Rap":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKUXNEYg6g4" data-time="

That may be my new pick for worst song in existence. And I've heard "Whip My Hair" from the third live-action Chipmunks film*. And even though it's my fault for clicking so many Garfield related videos, I blame you.

*...actually I'm not sure I can ever truly hate any song about wagging your tail, but I'm under the impression that the song is quite exquisitely painful to normals.]

I feel really bad for not liking this song much. A supportive song about loving yourself? What kind of monster would criticize a song like that? It's just not a song for me and I can't award bonus points because the song helps other people through tough times.

She's got a tremendous voice, but nothing about the music or lyrics really interests or excites me. If I rank based entirely on her voice, it might be like a 9? ; in terms of interest in the song itself, it's probably a 2. ...maybe a 1.5, honestly.

Video is amusing, but a car in space is not enough to give any bonus points. Considering her voice, there's a chance there's an unbelievably amazing first place song by her... but not this one, sorry.

Next update is going to be a bit later (won't be able to get one in during the morning hours), but here's two more short ones to end the night:

====================================================

172:

Nominator: Anagram (3/3)

The Good: There is a bear.

The Bad: Only one line of the song is about the bear.

The Terrible: The song has almost two minutes of dead air, where the song ends and the video just keeps playing without any audio.

[FINAL NOTES: There is something unsettling about the army standing under the shining banner of EA.]

====================================================

====================================================

171:

Song Name: Serpent Eating the Ground
Song Origin: Bravely Default
Song Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLBTIUzPpEQ" data-time="

Nominator: NFUN (8/9)

It's impressive, but not really my thing at the moment.

[FINAL NOTES: After hearing about what happens in the first game, I decided I wouldn't have the patience to deal with it and have refused to even try the game. Bravely Second might be better, but it's been pretty low on the list of RPGs I'd like to try. Octopath Traveler was great though.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Well considering how many times I've complained about modern RPG games trying to sound too epic with their music, you had to figure this was likely dropping sooner rather than later.]

====================================================

With Anagram losing his first song, he now ties azuarc as the most vulnerable player, with two songs remaining.

Ah. Considering my love of cartoon animals, I assumed you were making a gamble on a combination of nostalgia and cuteness in hopes of getting an overly high ranking & it just didn't quite pay off.

And on a note of high quality modern VGMs that I don't connect with, it's only appropriate that the last song be followed with this:

====================================================

170:

Song Name: Baba Yetu
Song Origin: Christopher Tin
Song Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJiHDmyhE1A" data-time="

Nominator: handsomeboy2012 (13/15)

Another song that my opinion of fluctuates wildly. The first time I heard it, I absolutely despised everything about it; an old-fashioned song quoting the Lord's Prayer? That's just gathering a bunch of traits I hate and throwing them together.

The second time, I went into the song expecting to hate it... but now that I knew what I was in for, I could better appreciate its beauty. Still not really my thing, but beautiful and I should be more open-minded and try new things and blah blah blah.

Third time, I...didn't care as much. I'd already burned through every possible emotion related to the song and its subject matter, leaving only indifference.

Not sure if I feel like this is too high or too low for the song's placement, but after bouncing between the bottom three and the top 50%, it seems to have wound up here.

[FINAL NOTES: I do see the appeal, but definitely not my type of thing, no. Coincidentally, that's how I feel about the Civilization series too: I'm not into the 4x genre (or any form of strategy game, excepting for Japanese Strategy RPGs), but I can vaguely appreciate the brilliance of the series.]

And while it wasn't intentional and I hadn't noticed it before, there is something oddly appropriate with the timing of the next song. Red Sam was cut for being too religious and dealing with suicide, now we're eliminating songs dealing with religion and suicide in back-to-back eliminations.

I think I've done like five different write-ups to this and have wound up deleting all of them. They've ranged from being somewhat goofy (not as goofy as some write-ups, but still sillier and more off-topic than the subject matter warrants), to pleading with you to not make me do this write-up at all, to being concerned about if I should consider this nomination a bit of a warning sign and getting physically ill worrying about you, to very serious notes about people I've known who killed themselves.

I've disregarded all of those for various reasons.

As for the song itself... well, if I ever want to feel sad and reminisce about the dead, this song certainly accomplishes that. I have to give it some credit for all the emotions and memories it was able to spark.

Song Origin: ...One of the Pokemon Movies, dunno the artist.
Song Link:

Nominator: IhatethisCPU (14/15)

This feels like a song I should love. It's almost impossible for a song to be too childish or cheesy for me, I like Pokemon (well... the designs of several Pokemon & some of the Mysterious Dungeon spin-offs), I really need something cheerful and happy to counterbalance some of the other songs on this list...

...but I dunno. Perhaps it's too similar to songs I already listen to? Since I want new experiences, a few songs were hit hard for not being new enough... but then I usually know that's what the problem is and that explanation feels incomplete here.

....Well whatever, I've sat here and listened to the song two more times in full in search of an answer, and I'm not getting any closer to an answer. We'll just have to be content not knowing the full details and just stick with the incomplete explanation.

[FINAL NOTES: Nope, I've still got nothing.]

Song Name: UFO
Song Origin: Bacamarte
Song Link:

Nominator: TheArkOfTurus (9/10)

Another day, another technically brilliant instrumental track that I don't connect with in any meaningful way. I think I like how the song changes; the part at 1:30 is like generic RPG town music, and I like...whatever that instrument is that starts around 2:17? I don't really know anything about music, like, at all.

Unfortunately, the parts of it that I really like only comprise a small part of the song, which hurts it a bit.

[FINAL NOTES: This is a progressive rock song recorded in '78? I don't think I would have ever predicted that genre or time frame.]

====================================================

====================================================

166:

Daughters - The Reason They Hate Me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqa4_YuQQV8" data-time="

Remove the singer and I probably enjoy this a lot more. I like the harshness of the instruments and this comes really close to being amazing, but I'm not sure I could care any less about the lead singer or the lyrics.

[FINAL NOTES: That was a harsh write-up, but I stand by it.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Decided to Google the band, expecting this to be another example of Post Hardcore , only to find that they are "Mathcore".

There are plenty of anime openings & endings that I love (anything Gundam or Inuyasha ; the Real Folk Blues is also a beloved classic for very good reasons), but this isn't one of them. I like Pokemon, but something about this singer's voice rubs me the wrong way.

Letting YouTube autoplay go, it started playing "Together" (first intro of Diamond and Pearl) as the next song and that song would have done better. The singer doesn't bother me as much (though she's not exactly my favorite), the references to assorted Pokemon attacks are worth a chuckle, and the refrains of "Yay yay yay yay!" are infectiously cheerful. It's cute and works for what it is.

Saikou... just isn't as cute. frankly.

[FINAL NOTES: I enjoy it more now than I did on the first three listens. Previously, this song was in 189th place, so it made a pretty decent leap.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Actually this has gotten stuck in my head quite a bit since this topic started and I'd like to move it up a bit (my first instinct is probably #159), but like I said on the last song I wanted to move up, I'm standing by keeping the list as it is now.]

Well, I did want to hear more metal songs so I initially had this much higher... but I'm not feeling it right now. Such is the problem with taking multiple trips through the list: On my first listen, I really wanted to listen to a song like this ; on the last trip through, I didn't. And since there is no scoring system and only my final opinion actually counts for anything... yeah...

...on the plus side, try getting me to listen to this on a different day, and it may shoot up another 40 places or so.

[FINAL NOTES: Judged completely on its own, this probably gets a higher score... the problem is, there are a lot of metal and metal-esque songs on this list that are better, which leaves this one coming off as redundant in comparison to them.]

The Isley Brothers - Between the Sheets

Nominator: Seginustemple (8/10)

Short version: I'm asexual and don't have any use for this type of song, though it sounds pretty great.

Long Version: I'm always up for finding some 80s pop songs that I've never heard before, and kinda surprised this song feels new to me. Especially since it was featured in a GTA game--unsurprisingly I just stuck to the classic rock station, so there are a lot of songs on that soundtrack I never heard.

Love the vocals, the song is...smoother than anything else on this list? That feels like an adjective I've heard used to describe R&B/Soul music before. I think. I'd like to hear more music of this style.

Problem is, well, I really can't connect to the lyrics. They're sung perfectly, sure, but when you have absolutely no interest in sex.... well, it's catchy enough to be worth listening to anyway, but it's never going to be one of my favorites.

[FINAL NOTES: Whoa, whoa, whoa, this is the same group that did Shout?!

Christ, I haven't heard this version of the song in YEARS. The Rod Stewart version (featuring Ronald Isley) still gets played, but the original just dropped off the radio completely once Rod's version started getting played. Such nostalgia...

...well that makes me appreciate them as a band much more, as it's truly impressive that they had a career spanning four or five decades and their biggest hits sound so different, it doesn't really help this specific song.]

I don't think the singers' voices or the upbeat nature of the music works very well with the lyrics. Most of the band just don't have enough edge to their voices to really sell the story ; whoever starts singing at 1:48 actually does and I like his part of the song, but the rest of the song is just too peppy for me (in this context, at any rate.)

It feels kinda like taking "Poison" by Alice Cooper, and then having a random boyband like *NSYNC bouncing along and overtaking the song for 2/3rds of it.

...now I kinda wonder if there are any mash-ups of Alice Cooper with random boybands. Also, I kinda wanna go listen to some more Alice Cooper at some point--I think I only know four songs of his (School's Out, Feed My Frankenstein, Poison, and No More Mr. Nice Guy), but I rather enjoy all four of those... kinda odd that I haven't ever tried finding a fifth song. Not that that's even remotely related to the topic, but I did warn everyone that these were steam of consciousness write-ups.

[FINAL NOTES: I need to start making a list of every artist this topic made me want to look into. While it's odd this song sparked an interest in Alice Cooper, that's still the start of...ZA'LIST.]

[[ZA'LIST:

1.Alice Cooper]]

====================================================

ZA'LIST eventually grows into a list of artists and albums I plan on seeking out after the topic ends. I've already gone back and edited in "A random song or two by a "Math Rock" artist" and "A couple more songs by "Justice"." onto the final version of ZA'LIST, so that I don't forget about them.

...In theory, anyway.

.....and yes, some of the things added to said list are actually inspired by what I'm listening to. Though there are a few other songs to come that succeeded in sparking an interest in things completely unrelated...

I wouldn't call Daughters 'math' anything, they're not about rhythmic complexity so much as just making their guitars sound like old windshield wipers and construction sites and such

I like the idea of heavily distorted guitars like that. Like, I hear guitar sounds like a construction site and my reaction is a Liz Lemon-like I want to go to there.

Just listened to that Isley Brothers song, it doesnt sound familiar. Is good though.

What this song falls victim to are two things that other songs on this list also get hit by: I feel it repeats itself too often ("a little bit" comes up 12 times during the song, particularly six times in rapid succession during each pre-chorus) and the artist was too honest in explaining what things meant.

There was a good theory that the song was called Prom because it was a Broken Promise. Ya know, symbolism and what not. But she set the record straight:

"Iss called prom cus I ain't have no friends in high school so I went to Miami w my mama for prom instead . Lol"

At which point, I no longer cared about the song. If the artist herself is going to dismiss the concept of any symbolism or meaning with a "Lol", then I'm going to be equally dismissive of the song.

And you'll probably argue that she only ruined the title of her song, not all of the lyrics, which...yeah, that's probably fair, but I will always argue that it was still a bad move on her part.]

i don't think repetition is inherently bad! it's a commonly used rhetorical device to convey emphasis and while the repetition in some works could be criticized as lazy or whatnot, i wouldn't exactly say that's the case here. this is by far the catchiest song on the album and in addition to playing into that smooth accessible vibe, the repetition here emphasizes the speaker's need for the "it pourin" in the previous line to be "just a little bit." The pressure of being an adult and the responsibilities that come with it are overwhelming the speaker and she needs it to only be "just a little bit" because she doesn't want to (or can't) take it all at once and the need for the (inevitable?) acceptance to come gradually is evident.

i wasn't aware of the promise theory and i didn't know about that answer the artist gave on the title of the song but if anything, that answer does give the title symbolic significance because the song isn't about an actual prom. the title reflects the feelings of carefree indulgence and finality of adolescence that is associated with the event which are present in the song.

I don't think I ever said repetition was inherently bad (and apologize if I did so), I just meant that I personally don't like it when I feel like a song has repeated something too many times. It's an entirely subjective bias that may not have any basis on reality. And I'm sure there are several songs that I like that are more repetitive from an objective standpoint.

And I'd be more inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt on that point, if she didn't immediately add the following:

https://twitter.com/sza/status/919848924302553088

"Aww that's jus the title love not the breakdown lol . My titles usually have more to do w the beat than the song . 2 many words for twitter"

And while she did say "usually", it was specifically said in regards to this song's title. She didn't just laugh at that one specific interpretation of the title, she laughed at the concept of her titles ever having any significance.

Lot of possible justifications: She was just being self-deprecating, she couldn't properly explain what she meant in so few characters, this song is one of the exceptions regardless of the timing of her statement, any number of things. To say nothing of the "you can't blame the song for what the artist said about the song" argument (not that such things have stopped me before, or will in the future).

It's just... I was never a big fan of the song anyway. It falls into the "objectively good, but not my kinda thing" category, like... well almost every song at this area of the list, outside of Garfield. I don't know that it even got moved down any; it had a low ranking, I tried to see if I was missing something, and saw her laughing at the very concept of symbolism and felt I saw all I needed to see. If she didn't have a Twitter account, I don't think the song goes up any further in the rankings anyway.

I was a bit surprised to learn that this song is from 1990, because it feels more like something from the 70s. Like I could turn on the usual Classic Rock stations and hear something very similar. And while I do enjoy it, I was hoping for something further from my comfort zone, so it drops earlier than it probably should have.

Another of the songs that I was at least reasonably familiar with before starting this ranking. It's also significantly better than I remembered it being--or perhaps I've just heard it often enough that it's now too familiar to actually hate.

Track gets a lot of bonus points for the "I don't believe in getting even, but giving what you deserve" line. It's not really a revenge song, but that line alone is close enough that it grabs my interest.

You're one bridge I'd like to burn
Bottle up the ashes, smash the urn

...I know I'm being too literal, but that line never made sense to me. If you gathered up the ashes and then immediately smashed the urn, you'd just be scattering them back onto the ground you picked the ashes up from in the first place. As far as desecrating remains go, it feels like an utter waste of time.

Nominator: Murphiroth (11/15)

Of course, modern instruments aren't a guarantee of a high score either. I'd say this is world's beyond "Allegro Con Fuoco", but it doesn't click for me either. It feels like it's trying too hard to be "X-TREME BADASSERY TO DA MAX, YO!!!!" and almost feels like a parody to me. And while it's certainly not bad, I don't think the song needs to be even half as long as it is. After the song starts to fade out and cuts to an ominous heartbeat, it should have stopped... instead that only marks the halfway point of the song and it decides to kick back in at full force, at which point I just want to close the video and do something else.

I like the concept, I like the distorted almost banshee-like wailing at points, I like the ominous heartbeat, but... it just doesn't know when to end. And don't take that as me not enjoying long songs, there are some I love, but this track doesn't really do anything with the added length.

Of course, after typing out everything I liked about it, the song jumped up another ten spots in the ranking.

[FINAL NOTES: Originally, I had this song only one place higher than that classical song, which is why the write-up so directly references it. The write-up did help me realize that there was a lot on this track that I did enjoy and it ultimately wound up moving up around 40 spots, but it's still too long for what it is and can't go any further than this.]

I thought I hated this song. It's so overplayed that even I know the bloody chorus by heart, I'm not really a fan of Sia (not that I really have enough experience with her work to have a valid opinion), and that pulsating sound after the chorus comes close to giving me a headache... but it's actually starting to grow on me a fair bit. I was always upset that Doraemon 64 wasn't translated. A game like Mario 64, only with a robot cat?! Oh, how I wanted it... alas, I never got the opportunity to play it. Which is probably just as well. Looking at YouTube videos, the game doesn't seem to be very good. But in my mind, I kept hyping it up as this amazing thing, with Doraemon being an almost mystical figure. A legendary robot cat that would always be beyond my reach...

...and here he is again, now dressed as a wizard and with a song about samurai or something. I haven't spent much effort to find lyric translations or understand the image, as I'm sure it's better without knowing the details. Best to let Doraemon be a forbidden mystery than to look too closely and destroy the mystique.

The worst VGM I've ever heard (and yes, I'm including Crazy Bus) is, by far, Vanguard Bandits Opening Parody:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=er1vEkWx1pw" data-time="

Written and sung by someone who felt the height of comedy was saying "fart". I need you to understand something: I did not nominate that song for your ranking topic. I could have, I had a lot of nominations, but I didn't. Because I'm not a monster.

Is Trivial Pursuit Interactive Multimedia Game's Credits Theme good? No. But it is mildly amusing as a novelty song. It's something I can listen to, say, once a year or so and have a light chuckle at.

I was mostly shocked that I couldn't find this song on YouTube. I had to try to record and upload it myself, which gives me a bit more attachment to the song... but I was really hoping for new songs, or at least songs I knew and had never spent much time thinking about, which keeps this song from rising any further. In fact, let's just eliminate three more songs I knew way too well before this topic started.

[FINAL NOTES: After "The Garfield Rap", I was rethinking my decision to call that Parody thing the worst song I'd ever heard... but I only said it was the worst VGM, so I can stand by that and not have to endure the misery of trying to directly compare Garfield Rap to Opening Parody.

On an unrelated note, does anyone else remember when Garfield used to say "[Group of People] should be drug out onto the street and shot" as one of his catchphrases?]

Nominator: NFUN (6/9)

Should have gone with one of the Space Jam mashups, honestly. Slam of the Northstar might have scored decently, between my intense nostalgia for Fist of the North Star & the fact that I hadn't heard the song until I started looking for Space Jam mashups to use as an example in this write-up.

The ordinary version of Space Jam seems kinda boring these days. It's not bad, obviously, but I've heard it hundreds of times. After Shut Up & Jam Gaiden, I added the song to all my mp3 players and playlists, out of fondness for the game and because the song wasn't like anything else I had at the time. Now, there are so many mashups, that if I ever want to hear the song then I'll pick one of those at random to put a new spin on it.

...also I never liked the Space Jam movie (or the terrible Space Jam game that was somehow more primitive and limited than Looney Tunes B-Ball) and Shut Up & Jam Gaiden nostalgia can only carry a song so far.

[FINAL NOTES: Seriously, a Playstation era sports game with only two teams? That was embarrassing, even by licensed game standards.

I've actually never seen the Fist of the North Star anime or read the manga, but somehow the games have managed to always be part of my life. Some of my earliest gaming memories are playing Black Belt on the Master System and I still go back to that game on a regular basis; I didn't know it at the time, obviously, but that was actually an edited version of a FotNS game and my earliest introduction the series.

A few years after that, I ran into a drugstore that rented Game Boy games. They actually had a copy of a Fist of the North Star fighting game; it was the first fighting game I ever played and my first experience with something that actually had the FotNS name.

And other stories too, blah blah blah, I really just wanted to think about how weird it was that there was a drug store that rented Game Boy games. That doesn't really feel like a thing, but I remember it quite clearly.]

Nominator: handsomeboy2012 (11/15)

It's probably a coincidence, but this is one of the many songs I nominated over at Se7en's ranking topic. Which makes it the exact opposite of what I was looking for. </.<

This song was a big enough deal that I remember seeing actual commercials for it during American Idol, advertising it as being exclusively on iTunes. The song was so great that I just had to have it; I listened to it so many times, looked up all the theories on who the song was about (Napoleon was the lead theory at the time, though I haven't checked in years), and was slightly obsessed with the song.

Not obsessed enough to ever listen to another Coldplay song because I'm quite happy with just the one, but still about as obsessed as I had ever been with a song.

Now, it's still a great song, but one I know too well. I'd never avoid listening to it, but it's nothing I'd ever go out of my way to listen to either.

Also, in the unlikely event you were trying to pick a song I had nominated, you made an error. This would probably be the lowest scoring song I nominated at Se7en's topic; I've freely admitted that it was between "The Stand (Man or Machine)" or "Lady Stardust" for favorite song I submitted for that ranking, but also, I didn't...honestly expect to get this one nominated successfully.

I was in a hurry to submit nominations, spent many hours trying to find any song from the decade to nominate, and threw this one out expecting it to be disqualified. An award winning song that was big enough that commercials were created to hype it up? I figured it would just buy me a day or two while I waited for the rejection.

....then it got in and is well on its way to being the highest ranked song I nominated over there, which...okay, sure, I'll take it. It is a song I like and super popular, which is one of the judging criteria over there, so sure. I don't regret nominating it. But...uhh...if you were trying to pick songs you already knew I liked, you could do a lot better than the one that was sort-of an accident!

[FINAL NOTES: Of course, there are some songs I knew quite well that got better rankings than this. The problem with this song, and the one ranked above it, is that I already loved it to death; after you've obsessed over a song for several years straight, it's kinda lame to run into the song again when you're looking for something different.

The trick is to find a song that's familiar enough to be nostalgic, without being something I've heard thousands of times. "This Old Heart of Mine" would have done incredibly well because while it's a great song that I heard a lot, I hadn't heard it in so long that I was incredibly excited to hear it again.

Ooh, now that YouTube is on a 60s kick, it just hit me with "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted"!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQywZYoGB1g" data-time="

She sighs contentedly while wagging her tail

Now see, that's how you do nostalgia. I can't be nostalgic for Viva la Vida because it never left. It's on all my computers, mp3 players, playlists, and pops up on the radio periodically. It's omnipresent.]

Nominator: NBIceman (15/15)

And one more for the songs I knew way too well before this started series. I first encountered this song while researching the Dark Champion boss fight from the Sega CD Eternal Champions. I wanted to compare the in game boss fight to the MUGEN version and, being completely incapable of playing Eternal Champions, had to find someone else that actually could beat him and watch their video.

They were unable to record audio and just played seemingly arbitrary music over the fighting, including this song. It was completely mindblowing; as someone who never listened to metal, I never knew "symphonic metal" could be a thing. It opened my mind to new possibilities in a way that very few songs ever did.

I quickly bought a copy of the song from Amazon, studied everything about the concept album and its story so I could fully appreciate the lyrics, and hyped the song up as the greatest thing ever to anyone who would listen.

For the longest time, I refused to listen to any other songs by Kamelot. This one track was special, unique. It was like nothing I had ever heard of and I feared adding other, similar songs would ruin the mystique. These days, I've grown a bit tired of it; It's been too many years and I now want something new. I've skimmed some of their other work--I'm a fan of Veritas, as I'm a sucker for villain songs and it's basically the most JRPG Final Boss-esque song in existence.

If I could forget that I'd heard this song before and fall in love with it again, this would easily take first place. But I can't and it didn't.

[FINAL NOTES: I feel bad with this song getting a low placement in both my topic and Se7en's, especially since it was one of my favorite songs for so long... but like Viva la Vida, I'm burned out on the song and want something different. I'll always love it, but I...don't want it to be on this ranking at all, so it just barely escapes the bottom 50.]

I like the idea (actually, I like anything that involves people dressing up as non-humans; Goblins aren't really my thing, but they're not human, so I'll take it) and the lyrics, but there are better scream-y metal songs on this list alone.

I initially had this about 20 or 30 spaces higher due to the sheer novelty of the song, but it drops a few pegs each time I listen to it. I fear that if I let this song loop any more times, it'll drop all the way to the bottom of the list.

It probably won't surprise you to hear that rap is the genre of music that I have the absolute least experience with. I never heard a single song growing up and even when I got older, it wasn't really represented on the stations I ever listened to.

One 80s station I used to listen to did have three technical examples:

"Rapture" by Blondie, which is hilarious, but barely counts as it's a nonsensical "disco, funk, hip hop, rap" oddity (though it is a guilty pleasure of mine) ... also, forgive the ignorance, but I'm not really clear on the distinction between hip hop & rap.

"Parents Just Don't Understand" by Will Smith, which was amusing (I was too old for the song, but I do love I Dream of Jeannie references)... until I noticed the whole 'overly sexualizing a 12-year old' part of the song and got unbelievably squicked out.

"Funky Cold Medina", which is so terrible that I'd be tempted to avoid the entire genre just to make sure I never heard that song or anything like it ever again.

Skip forward several years to someone else's music ranking topic and I encountered the first rap song that I actually loved unironically: "R.I.P". by Childish Gambino. Like The Haunting below, it was truly mind blowing.

I loved the audio skipping effect and enjoyed it enough to seek out the original song it was sampling (Nightcall, which I also loved) and...some other rap song that also sampled it, that wasn't even half as good, but it was quite interesting to see how all three of them took the same base song and made something completely different.

Skip forward again to Se7en's ranking topic and I also got into MC Frontalot, slightly. Stoop Sale wasn't bad (the puppets helped), but "I'll Form The Head" was the real standout. I've never been a fan of Voltron (though I haven't seen the Netflix series), but that was brilliant.

So, there are a couple songs that I'm a big fan of and I do want to listen to more (I was honestly hoping for more rap to be nominated, but didn't want to skew the nominations by openly pushing for it), but... well, honestly, this song is a bit too hardcore for me at the moment?

I'll admit, I'm not really in the best position to judge the song presently. Perhaps in another year or two, when the number of songs of this genre I've heard has reached the double digits, I'll be able to better appreciate it.

...also bonus points for the video including a llama.

*GUMMY Continued*

[FINAL NOTES: Right, "Funky Cold Medina", that was the worst song in existence. I think I'd take a mashup of Garfield Rap & Parody Opening over that abomination.

Also, I forgot that I did have one "legally defined as a rap song" that I picked up around 2005: The Chipmunks' version of the Men in Black theme, but "cartoon animals singing about popular movie characters" seems rather cheating. [And yes, I know Men in Black was technically a comic first, but considering the song was written for the film and the film took so many liberties with the source material, I feel justified referring to it as a movie in this context.]

...and I guess there was that "Bedrock Hop" album, but I don't think there was any actual rapping on it? Been a while since I listened to the whole album though, Disco Dino was the only song that I actually kept on my playlists.

*shudders*

God, that album was...something. The last song features a pair of toddlers attempting to sing the Flintstones theme, while some guy plays random voice clips from the cast. I will never forget the horror: Fred shouting "SHAKE YOUR BOOTY, WILMA!!" in a threatening tone just before a chorus of damned children sing the theme song while Barney laughs...I had almost blocked that travesty from my memory.

...still better than Medina. Garfield Rap & Parody Opening it's harder to say, but the Flintstones song is at least laughably terrible, so I'd probably take it over them.]

Put the DOOM 2016 song in the context of sprinting around Mars/Hell as the Doom Slayer murdering thousands of demons and it makes a lot more sense why it's so over the top.

As for Nekrogoblikon...it's hard for me to say no to a band with their own hype goblin. Helps that they don't take themselves very seriously at all.
