Well that was quite the write up for mine. And defying expectations once again, I thought Gummy would last longer than BagBak for my rap/hip hop songs.

Shout out to Childish Gambino and RIP. That's not one I would expect you to know considering it was on a mixtape and not one of his actual albums!

Never knew that one was considered obscure. Like I said, it was nominated at someone else's ranking topic, so I never had any real context for where it came from.

Nominator: Dragon66116 (12/15)

I like Joey Bada$$'s portion of the song; I'm not crazy about Raury's part on the song and I'm not entirely sure why it's even here. If we're looking into Joey's mind and seeing the price of fame, then...uhh...why's the other guy here?

Are you even allowed to sing about how fame has cost you all of your friends and then have someone else sing the final verse? Isn't Raury a friend? If not, why is he in your song to begin with? And as far as I can tell, the two of them don't seem to directly interact with each other during the song or even really reference each other's verses. It feels like a second song stapled on for no reason I've been able to decipher.

This is probably a failure on my part and it's probable that I just don't have the experience with the genre or the artists involved to get what's happening here, but it is what it is.

[FINAL NOTES: Nothing to add here.]

I'm a knife
Knifin' around
Cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut
cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut

NORMAL WRITE-UP

If someone ever starts referring to themselves as a knife, or any sort of weapon, run. It never ends well.

I'll give it credit for being unique and it's interesting how her sister sings an inverted version of the lyrics (He's a Hot Knife/I'm a Hot Knife), but the lyrics are way too repetitive for me to actually get into the song.

Also, I don't usually enjoy drumming, so having such a....loud & intense drum as one of the main points of the song certainly doesn't do it any favors.

[FINAL NOTES: Ehhh....nah, I feel like leaving the write-up(s) there.]

Song Origin: Janelle Monae
Song Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_WhE7mBwK8" data-time="

Nominator: TheArkOfTurus (8/10)

The song feels too old-fashioned for much of it. It does pick up at around the three minute mark, but until then, it's just too...natural for me to get into it. Add in the fact that it deals with topics I'm ill-equipped to discuss and does so in such a blunt way, you have a song that is about as far from my comfort zone as possible. Which is a good thing, but... I dunno.

If you want an example of a vaguely similar song I love, then I'd cite "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman. I actually nominated it over at Se7en's topic, though I didn't have any prepared comments for it--just some basic comments about how I love the song, but really can't discuss the reality of generational poverty or how difficult it must have been for her to try breaking into folk music, when that genre was (and presumably still is) dominated almost exclusively by white men.

Which...yeah, those are topics that should be discussed, but not by me and not in the context of a message board game. But something about Tracy Chapman's voice and message really resonates with me, in a way this nomination just doesn't.

I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone....

That line in particular is just so perfect...

Well, anyway, this certainly isn't a bad song and it's one I should keep listening to because it's not my kind of thing... but I like a lot of other songs on this list more, so I'm sticking with dropping it here.

[FINAL NOTES: What is with that outro? After the song fades out at 4:41-ish, there's this faint futuristic bit that comes in for a few seconds before quickly fading back out. I like that part.]

I wish they used some vocal distortion effects during the actual song. Only using it for the last 22 seconds seems like a waste. Why even bother trying to be experimental if it's only for a few seconds after the song is already fading out?

Not bad, just disappointing that they offer something I want in the song and then end it as soon as it was getting interesting.

[FINAL NOTES: I like the intro before they start singing and I like the outro, but don't care too much about the main part of the song. Apparently this is how far that can get you.]

Black Panther was awesome.

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Oh, how to do this without getting this post modded... let's see...

The chorus or hook or whatever is pretty catchy and gets stuck in my head occasionally.

I like the interlude. It's different and unexpected, that sort of thing is right up my alley.

I'm pretty far left, so... the choice of words is not exactly what I'd go with for a protest song, but I think I can appreciate the general sentiment.

Ranking things again, I'd probably bump this up... to anywhere from 137 to 139, probably? Not a big jump, but I feel like I want this to be marginally higher than it is.]

This song isn't from the 70s? Seriously? This would fit right in with any 70s disco playlist.

.....Unfortunately, it doesn't really do enough to distinguish it from the type of songs I'd hear on said 70s stations, which hurts it quite a bit. Certainly not the fault of the song itself, but I still want something that feels more unique.

[Edit: Mind you, I'm sure you can point out plenty of ways this differs from songs that were actually released in the 70s. I just don't know enough about music to hear anything other than disco, so none of that would mean anything to me.]

Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9aF9_mZDyY" data-time="

Nominator: Se7enthrust (7/10)

Like "Supper's Ready", this song feels like it was filling out a checklist of things I like.

80s pop music? Check.

Obscure references? Check

Fictional Bands? Check

Fiction within fiction? Well, I doubt this band exists in Blood Dragon, so...yeah, I'll list this as a check.

Cheesy songs about friendship? Check.

Distorted electric guitar? Check.

The difference is that while Supper's Ready's checklist resulted in an over twenty minute long odyssey of total insanity unlike anything I'd ever heard before, this song is generic enough that I feel like I've heard it a thousand times before. And it feels so ridiculously on the nose in terms of appealing to me that it kinda loops around to being mildly annoying.

It's pretty, but it feels like the type of soft rock song that I already listen to. Nothing in the music or the lyrics really grabs me as being a "new" experience. it's hard for me to recommend specific songs as i'm not that great at ranking stuff myself. but if you're interested my favorite albums would be their first two and a funk odyssey.

one thing you wouldn't know about them if you've only heard canned heat is that their music is quite diverse. they're NOT a '70s disco pastiche band, though a few of their other songs do sound a lot like canned heat.

It varies from song to song. This one was a bit different in that the only attempt at a translation I could find was someone else singing English lyrics over top of the song... which I can't verify as being even remotely accurate, but considered likely close enough for me to have the basic gist of the song's meaning.

There are one or two songs that I had to resort to Google Translate on because there was no trace of anything anywhere, but I'm not immediately sure if either of those were nominated by you; I'll say that I know two of your nominations had incredibly in depth translations available:

The one about Hong Kong had a full line-by-line breakdown of what was being said and the significance of it. This helped the song a fair amount because I knew absolutely nothing about Hong Kong and the lyrics were completely inscrutable without some additional help.

And the Sam Hui song had a good debate on how the lyrics should be translated, what they would literally be translated as, and what not:

Song: Ironsword Theme
Origin: Ironsword: Wizards and Warriors II
Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbIJM1xAjNY" data-time="

Nominator: Se7enthrust (6/10)

This song gets a pretty large boost by being the only NES track here, but it's a long way from being one of my favorite NES songs... and obviously it's even further down the list if we factor in games from other systems. (my favorites in no particular order: Anything from Chrono Cross, Undertale, MM8, or anything composed by Tim Follin ; also the GameBoy theme from Robocop, which doesn't fit any of the above criteria but is arguably better than any of them)

((Those of course just being favorite non-vocal songs. Vocally I'd take...just about anything from a Sonic game, any of Transistor's lyrical songs, or possibly "Walk On Vanity Ruins" from Silent Hill 3 as an oddball choice. No one else liked that song, but it was so unlike anything else that I heard, that it may actually have been my favorite song from that Reverse Ranking topic.))

There are parts of this song that I enjoy--the brief outro is particularly Tim Follin-esque--but too much of the song is ruined by the loud, monotone beeping. BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP, all spaced exactly the same distance apart. They make it impossible to focus on anything else during those segments, give me a headache, and come close to completely tanking the song's ranking... but I can't hate anything that's this unique or even vaguely reminds me of Tim Follin, so it winds up here.

[FINAL NOTES: I should probably listen to more music from games published by Ocean. The games suck, but the Robocop Theme and Unusued Song 2 from The Flintstones movie game are both amazing, and I've heard Ocean games described as "terrible gameplay, amazing music". I should probably give more songs by them a choice.]

Should have gone with Boyz II Men if you wanted a good boy band; if you wanted to go with something ironic, then we all know that "Hangin' Tough" by the Backstreet Boys is the obvious decision.

I have no complaints about the song itself, but it feels...ordinary? It's a nice, catchy, completely generic & inoffensive pop song. The type of thing that I would already have on a playlist or two. Nothing wrong with that, but there's also nothing worth saying about it or the band.

Chopin - Polonaise, Op. 53

Nominator: Seginustemple (5/10)

Well, I was going to go for another delusional fantasy sequence, but I should probably limit those to one per nominator at most. So, let's try giving as normal a write-up as I can, shall we?

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of Chopin, he is not much of an exception to my dislike of classical music, but he does have one thing going for him: Eternal Sonata. The story of a dying Chopin being transported to a generic JRPG fantasy realm. It was not a good game, but I certainly enjoyed laughing at it the whole way through.

Naturally as a game featuring Chopin, the game would pause at certain milestones to play some of his music and give a brief history lesson on the piece. This song would be unlocked if you cleared the optional dungeon, so I've actually heard this one before and have a vague memory on the song's significance. it gives this song an odd bit of nostalgia that catapaults it well beyond the ranks of the average classical song, even if it's still not something I'd go out of my way to listen to.

[FINAL NOTES: Putting classical music over Joey Fatone? WHAT HAVE I BECOME?!?]

I had to look at two websites to make sure I correctly understood the lyrics, that sure helped them make money! </sarcasm>

...that's not even an inconvenience. I always try to check two websites anyway, due to the problem of frequently misquoted lyrics and to see if anyone's providing information I should know in the comments sections. It accomplished nothing other than mild annoyance.

This isn't just greedy, but incompetent. Captain Planet villains would laugh at this. Verminous Skumm's plan to spread misinformation about HIV & AIDS to ruin a basketball playing Neil Patrick Harris' life may have been pointlessly evil, but you can kinda spin it into making sense... like if NPH life got so miserable that he ran away from home, perhaps he would have to live in the sewer with the mutant rats or something. Or maybe Skumm's trying to prove that he should be in charge of the Hate ring to summon Captain Pollution, by doing his best to embody the concept of Hate itself unlike that smug Dr. Blight. Or maybe the rat just really, really hates Neil Patrick Harris.

Either way, even Skumm would take one look at Universal Music Group North America's plan to censor one page of one website and laugh in their faces.

...

Yes, I did just connect a song about dysfunctional relationships to the Captain Planet AIDS episode. Just one of the many exciting things that may happen when you ask a deranged rabbit to comment on your song choices!

[FINAL NOTES: If it matters, that whole UMC tirade had no impact on the song's placement.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: I planned on saying that I regretted having this song so low, but looking at what's coming up, I... don't know that I'd take this over any of the songs dropping tomorrow, so this may actually be exactly where I want it to be.]

One of the only two mashups on the list, though both songs are so radically different that they can scarecly be considered the same genre. I wasn't a fan of this at first, but it's definitely been moving further up my rankings with each listen. If I had any nostalgia for DDR or knew much about Fate/Stay Night (my only knowledge of the latter comes from lurking in Mercs and Strongest Character Tournament topics), it may have risen even further.

[FINAL NOTES: I originally had this pegged near the bottom of the list (possibly bottom 20?), but after liking it more with each listen, it made a pretty big jump up the list. It's probably the second most improved song--the song with the largest gap between initial placement and final ranking still hasn't come up.]

that section in the Chopin piece starting from measure 129 is so juicy I gotta give it a shout out

I wish this was an instrumental. I love the music, but the singer & the lyrics drag it way down for me. It would likely be an easy Top 30 if we removed him.

Cats staring out the window, taking over the town
Hovering like vultures with frantic wings

That mixed metaphor bothers me. People that are like cats that are like vultures?

...if I believed for half a second that he meant literal cats taking over the town, this song would probably jump into the top 30. Bonus points if said cats were cosplaying as Marvel's Vulture at the time.

[FINAL NOTES: And now the other entrant with only three songs enters the Danger Zone with only one song remaining.]

This is so far removed from the other nominated song by this band that I can barely believe they're from the same group. This certainly isn't a happy song, but... well in comparison to that other song...

[FINAL NOTES: The singer's voice gets a bit too high-pitched for my tastes in a few places. It knocks the song down several pegs.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Everything about this song--from the intensity of the lyrics to the way they are sung--is heavily toned down from Ningen wo Kaburu. I didn't even notice it was the same band on my first trip through the nominations.]

Well, this brought back memories, but that's as specific as I'm willing to get.

[FINAL-ER NOTES: It's interesting that I associate this show with a very specific time and place. There were a lot of games and shows I played and watched around that time (Final Fantasy Adventure, Tiny Toon Adventures (NES), Battletoads, Dr. Wily's Revenge ; the Carmen Sandiego game show), but none trigger the flood of memories like this.

It's likely because I haven't seen this show since then. The games I've played at least a few times over the years (I never got anywhere in Dr. Wily's Revenge until around '07), I knew Carmen Sandiego from the Master System game before the show, so those aren't as associated with any one specific moment.

...of course, like that first song about suicide, the memories this stirs are not good ones; but... well, there is some value in music capable of triggering such strong flashbacks, even if they are things I don't wish to remember.]

Song Origin: The Main Drag

Nominator: mcflubbin (11/15)

1: The short, rapid drumming reminds me of a gun firing a three-shot burst. It feels wasted on this song; I keep waiting for it to turn incredibly dark and violent, but no one ever gets shot. It's...oddly stressful, even though I know it shouldn't be and that's just my own fault.

2: You really should have nominated the music video version of this song, which would have jumped the song into the top 30 at least.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuG_jxi37RM" data-time="

A: Having a goofy, fun video helps take the edge off the drumming. Like, if they're cosplaying as Calvin and Hobbes without any guns around, it eases my mind enough to actually focus on the song.

B: I am the bad type of furry. Do you know how jealous I am that he both has a tiger outfit and is confident enough to pull it off?!

C: The additional guitar playing improves the song quite a bit over the album version. The album one feels like an unfinished demo in comparison ; not that some demos aren't better than the final product (the demo version of "Doctor My Eyes" would never have seen the success of the studio release, but I think it may be better), but...uhh...this one isn't?

...man forget top 30, listening to the video version again, it's definitely in the top 20. Unfortunately that's not the version I'm supposed to be ranking, so here we are.

[FINAL NOTES: I was so tempted to disqualify this version of the song and just replace it with the good one myself, but that would be cheating. This joins the Jeopardy Theme as being the wrong version of an otherwise high scoring song.]

Song: Gamecube Startup Logo
Origin: Nintendo Gamecube
Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksZh-FHuKpk" data-time="

Nominator: Se7enthrust (4/10)

I never really cared about the Gamecube, so there's no nostalgia here. That probably helps its ranking, since if I did have a lot of nostalgia for it, it might have dropped back at the "block of songs I already liked" part of the list.

While it's only five seconds long, it's absolutely perfect for what it is. I can think of no better jingle to accompany the little startup animation, it's catchy, and it's unlike anything else on the list. That's enough to carry it further than I expected when I first saw the nomination.

And now to ramble about a different system startup, just because I want to:

It would have lost points for being something I already loved, but I was obsessed with the Sega CD BIOS when the system was new:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmoQOpd6VJc" data-time="

No idea why, but that song alone was enough to sell me on the system. I had to have a Sega CD, just so I could listen to this song. That was really stupid as the system had very few things worth playing, but I still enjoy the music. Someone actually converted the startup screen to a MUGEN stage and I still use it on a regular basis just for the song... though after over two decades of loving it, I'm not nearly as into it as I once was.

Not related to anything, but since I'm talking about Sega CDs, let's look at some hidden tracks that you could find by trying to play the games like music CDs. First, a message that scared me so much that I had trouble sleeping for days:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZjk5VYL7XE" data-time="

Of course, back then I had no idea what backmasking was, much less a way to reverse it to hear the hidden message. All I knew was that if you pushed the wrong buttons when turning that game on, someone would receive a call from hell as monstrous demons chant ominously. EVIL GAME! EVIL!!!!

And second, Sega's standard warning message, which is ridiculously awesome:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhoiGZ2Kg9I" data-time="

That distorted electric guitar... ohh, you have no idea how I wish this led into an entire song or even an entire album. Truthfully, I'm not sure what would have happened if you tried nominating Sega CD Warning--it's incredibly nostalgic and has A+++ instrumentation, but is incredibly short and not really a song, so I think I would have imploded.

...Perhaps we should be thankful you didn't nominate it then.

[FINAL NOTES: I think that covered everything I wanted to cover.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Between the arguments for this song coming in last place and getting a very high placement, I think I may have inadvertantly placed this song in a spot that pleases no one. </.<]

Another song that seems to just stop in the middle of a note. As I knew absolutely nothing about Hong Kong or its history, this song was basically impossible to decipher even with a translation of the lyrics...eventually I found a guide that explained the lines of the song in addition to offering a translation, which helped quite a bit.

Though before this explanation I don't think I'd even heard that Hong Kong was once a British colony, so there's only so much history an explanation of a pop song can cram into one page. Still, I am grateful for it.

...oof, I probably should have done a bit more research on that song. Besides tragic irony, the fact that it was (according to Wikipedia) a tribute to Nelson Mandela would have helped it dramatically. Its too late to do anything now, but I do regret this placement now.
