Day of the Dead is a fun movie, especially with Joseph Pilato.

Halloween 3 has also become a cult classic for many people, even though I personally don't care for it.

Friday the 13th has the first Jason hockey mask appearance, so it has that going for it.

voted Saw III because Saw is one of the few way-too-long-running horror movies that started its steep decline AFTER the third entry

I mean Saw III wasn't as good as the first two but it was WAY better than 4, 5, and 7

106. Universal's Dark Universe (7 points)
Nominated by: scarletspeed7 (4/5 remaining)
http://digitalspyuk.cdnds.net/17/21/980x490/landscape-1495474879-dark-universe.jpg

Importance: 5
Fear: 1
Snake: 1

I really think that picture up above explains a lot. A bunch of boring people in dark boring suits standing around in a dark boring room. Compare that with any group picture of the classic Universal Monsters; despite literally lacking any sort of color, the Monster Squad jumps off the screen with vibrant personalities and unique, memorable flairs that clue you in instantly to what they are all about. I don't know who's who in the Dark Universe group; you could tell me any one of them were Dracula and I'd believe you.

This is the core problem of the Dark Universe: it's not about the monsters. It's about Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe phoning in laughable performances while some lady tangentially named "The Mummy" wreaks havoc around London like some MCU villain. Not like Thanos or even the Chitauri either; I'm talking Malekith the Dark Elf here.

I get that maybe audiences don't want cliche corpses in bandages hobbling around anymore, but is it really that hard to ask for at least an attempt at a more horror-themed movie, instead of some generic action schlock? A little craft, care, and suspense can go a long way towards me letting Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Fury's House of Universal Monster Easter Eggs (trademarked) slide a little.

The Dark Universe will be an example of what not to do with your cinematic universe for years to come. Don't say your starting your universe with a film and then go "hehe, just kidding guys". Don't completely drain your main selling points of any discernible characteristics that actually make them interesting. Don't make bland action-adventures that make little to no use of an actor who doesn't want to be there.

Dark Universe was simply and undeniably a flop before it even left the planning stages. The complete bomb that was The Mummy made sure of this. Will this franchise continue? Probably. Will it correct its past mistakes? Anything is possible, but me, I just can't see it at the current state its in right now, sadly. Luckily, the Universal Monsters already have their own successful shared universe, and it started over 80 years ago.

The best part of that image is that the actors are photoshopped to be there. They were clearly never in the same room.

On a serious note, though, it's astonishing how badly they screwed it up after they restarted after Dracula Untold.

So true! Russel Crowe looks particularly awkward, it almost looks like he's supposed to be resting his hand on the Invisible Man or something but Johnny Depp is in the picture so that's out of the window.

105. Luigis Mansion Game Over (7 points)
Nominated: Pirate_Harris (4/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFbZZizNij4" data-time="

Importance: 1
Fear: 1.5
Snake: 4.5

Luigi's Mansion is a great little game that surprisingly takes the Super Mario universe and makes a cool atmospheric title out of it whilst still retaining that kid-friendly charm. It reminds me a lot of great films like The Witches, The Gate, or Coraline, movies that can introduce kids to horror in a more gradual fashion, with elements of comedy and light-heartedness that can take a lot of the pressure off or ease you into the scarier elements of the films.

The "Good Night" screen fits right into the survival horror-lite gameplay Luigi's Mansion portrays. It's not the terrifyingly bloody "You Died" of Resident Evil; "Good Night" implies a less lethal game over, a mere fainting from the shock of ghostly apparitions as Luigi simply can't take the fear anymore. Still, it's a different game over from what other Mario games show. It's a bit more concrete and real seeing Luigi lying helpless on the floor for a few moments than just seeing Mario fall down a pit.

It's just a good detail that contributes to the overall experience.

103. Scooby-Doo and the Cyberchase (8 points)
Nominated by: NFUN (4/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDOGtjGmD3k" data-time="

Importance: 3.5
Fear: 1.5
Snake: 3

Scooby-Doo and the Cyberchase is the 4th direct-to-video Scooby-Doo movie and in terms of the franchise, was a series of lasts for the Mystery, Inc. Gang. It was the last Scooby production to be produced by Hanna-Barbera, the last time Scott Innes voiced Shaggy and Scooby-Doo, and the last film B. J. Ward voiced Velma. If you're a big Scooby-Doo fan, this would be a drastic shift for your favorite franchise for sure.

I do appreciate Scooby-Doo as a franchise for what it accomplishes, but personally I've never really been into it. Cyberchase is a serviceable but forgettable extended Scooby-Doo episode, backed up with a gimmicky "video game level" set-up, which I kind of remember a lot of shows doing when I was a kid but I don't really have examples I can think of unfortunately. I'm sure a lot of people remember this movie for the villainous Phantom Virus, and I can see why he would stick out in people's minds. It was actually a trend for early Scooby-Doo video features to actually portray real supernatural threats instead of common criminals, in an attempt to garner a darker tone; Phantom Virus still errs on the lighter side of things, but I've seen a lot of people claim they got nightmares from him as a kid so he does have some horror weight to him.

Cyberchase won't be winning any awards but as an end of an era for Scooby-Doo and with at least a somewhat remembered antagonist, it can still stick out in the Scooby-Doo canon for many a fan.

102. Getting hyped for Halloween in July (concept) (10 points)
Nominated by: BetrayedTangy (4/5 remaining)

Importance: 3
Fear: 1
Snake: 6

Now this may be something I'm just making up and I'm crazy for, but I see more and more people getting hyped for Halloween earlier and earlier. It's not as crazy as the premature Christmas rush, but for horror fanatics and the like, Halloween is like our Christmas. As horror movies increasingly become one of the hottest, most profitable genres, our collective love for Halloween and the month of horror also grows. This year, I definitely found myself looking forward to these rankings earlier than ever, because they're just so damn fun and I get to experience new things I've never really heard of before. I even worked out which movies I wanted to watch come October.

Let's face it, Halloween is slowly becoming our domineering force and holiday, bolstered by an atmosphere that chases away the dog days of summer with a chilly breeze, darkening days that welcome cozy indoor horror viewing, and trick 'r treating nights that reminds us of all the joys of childhood.

Importance: 1
Fear: 1
Snake: 8.5

I absolutely love this track from Koudelka, a hybrid tactical RPG/survival horror game that's actually the precursor to the Shadow Hearts series. Waterfall is a battle theme, one of four featured in the game, and it starts out exuding a calming, concentrated atmosphere, that's upbeat but at the same time feels reserved and cautious. I like how at 3 minutes though it switches tones, becoming a lot more frantic and panicked, as the battle becomes more intense. Yet, it winds down back to a familiar groove, giving off hope yet again. I love the percussion in the track which is kind of tense, whilst it's offset by the strings and wind instruments giving an open-aired feeling of freedom, like being, as the title implies, by a waterfall.

Anyway, it's a cool, underappreciated track that's relaxing to listen to whilst also being an appropriate battle theme for the atmosphere Koudelka portrays.

12 years on, and the pumpkin dance still remains as one of the most enduring and comical internet memes around. There is so much Halloween love put behind this interpretive dance routine, from the classic Halloween party hit "Ghostbusters" to the cemetery background set right out of a low-budget 50s horror movie, to a pumpkin mask that invokes Halloween 3. It's impossible to watch and not at least smile a little bit, serving as a great reminder that Halloween can be just as often a spot of goofy fun as much as a straight-up horror holiday. The dance moves may be bad, but this video is anything but.

Importance: 3
Fear: 4
Snake: 5

Pokemon is usually pretty outstanding with the lore behind their ghost-type Pokemon, and to me, Mimikyu is no exception to this rule. Mimikyu is a Pokemon that yearns to be as popular as the world-famous Pikachu, disguising itself in a crude rag vaguely resembling the more popular mouse in its attempts to fool people. It's kind of sad actually, as Mimikyu seemingly lives its whole life under these rags, just waiting for someone to love it as much as any other Pokemon, but time after time other trainers see through its cheap disguise and attack it, breaking the illusion.

Now, there's more to Mimikyu too. There's a legend around Pokemon lore that actually seeing its true form will inflict serious illness on to the viewer. The "Ultra" Pokedex entries suggest a more violent side to Mimikyu too, with Ultra Moon even going so far as to suggest that the lonely Pokemon will seek revenge on any trainer who attacks it.

I think like any good urban legend, there's grains of truth hidden in the story, but ultimately Mimikyu is a very sympathetic Pokemon who just wants a true companion for itself. Mimikyu's plight is relatable, as there are many people shunned by society who put on masks just to be accepted by others. Mimikyu's ghost-sheet styled costume also invokes the masquerade side of Halloween, and the inherent mystery in not being able to concretely identify who somebody is.

A very intriguing Pokemon indeed, and perhaps the best Pokemon introduced in Generation VII, with horror touches that really come naturally to the franchise for whatever reason.

I feel like Mimikyu's importance rank might rise over time. Depends how much it stands the test of time among the most popular Pokemon

Hey snake, I'm probably the only one to ever notice this, but your Mimikyu link doesn't work. You'd better fix it in the three minutes you have left.

98. The Fear (Metal Gear Solid 3) (12 points)
Nominated by: Pirate_Harris (3/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASqRGmxlBds" data-time="

Importance: 3
Fear: 4
Snake: 5

Despite having all the ingredients for a surefire success, The Fear has never really been one of my favorite boss fights in the series. Whilst slow-paced like the fight against The End, it doesn't match up to the tense game of cat-and-mouse that jungle sniper duel has going for it. It's a bit too easy to cheese on first playthroughs with the thermal goggles, and though there are some cool ways to make the fight easier, it's not really enough for me to place it in a high tier.

Not all is lost however. The Fear's spider-like mannerisms are definitely freaky, living up to the emotion he carries into battle. Some of his features, like double-jointed limbs and a snake-like tongue come from extensive surgeries to further his quest to be the most fearsome man on the planet and satisfy his obsession with fear. Other aspects of The Fear, including his stealth camo and lethal poison arrows, further his persona even more, surely fueling his opponents' paranoia and worsening their mental states.

I wish that came forward a little more in gameplay however. I've never found it to be a "scary" or psychological fight, which previous boss fights like Psycho Mantis or Vamp accomplished to varying degrees. When the boss fight standards of your series are of the highest caliber, you kind of expect a little bit more out of it.

But hey, I do like when The Fear dies and you hear the sound of "feaaaarrrr!" echo throughout the forest whilst arrows shoot everywhere.

I've never beaten The Fear without cheesing him with the goggles. I've also never outsniped The End. I always just sneak around and shotgun him in the back.
