I only nominated that because it was the most cliched horror thing I could think of. If I'd remembered cat jump scares at the time, I'd have used it instead.

Luckily I love discussing tropes and the history of it like this!

Dead of Winter is one of those games that looks like a lot of fun but I'd never really end up playing it

I've had the Game of Thrones board game at my apartment for like 3 years now but getting a group of like 4-6 people to sit and play a 4+ hour game is difficult

My thoughts exactly, even worse is when you actually do start and everyone taps out after like half an hour. Happened to me twice with the Resident Evil Deck Building Game.

61. Hereditary (film) (18 points)
Nominated by: GANON1025 (4/5 remaining)

Importance: 5

Hereditary was a weird film experience for me. As the most hyped horror film of the year, its attention grabbing trailer made the most of strange imagery, stressed-looking characters, an awesome score, and one particular mouth-popping little girl. I honestly have not seen a trailer for a horror film that good in a long time, and I really mean that. It was the type of trailer that really did not spoil or reveal anything but instead captured the mood and vision of what you would eventually see. More trailers like this would make the world a better place.

I did not see this on initial release in theaters, it was a couple of months after actually, and I think that really helped me form a better, honest opinion about it. I was happy everyone loved it and was excited to see it, but I didn't want to be influenced by the hype. I have many conflicting feelings about the film. The performances are rock-solid and capture a family in pure depression and disdain for one another, and I can still remember how Toni Collette yelled her heart out at the family dinner table or Alex Wolff's look of pure emptiness after his sister gets accidentally decapitated on the road back from a party. This type of horror is one that's tangible and you can feel it crawl throughout your skin.

Plot-wise however, it loses me a little. Its deep underlying cult aspect feels ripped from and done better in Rosemary's Baby, with a really cliche "older lady" friend plot line that to me just detracts from the strengths of the family drama. Even some of the more straightforward horror moments late in the film almost feel like they come straight out of an Insidious or Conjuring movie. Maybe I just expected something more psychological here, although the ending is creepy and uniquely ambiguous which slightly makes up for the more tried & true tropes found in the film. I wouldn't say these are done bad, and some even magnify the family tribulations, but I've seen many horror films this decade that feel more special in their execution.

I can definitely see the importance of this film rising in future years, remembered as a classic of its era. I would recommended it to anyone even remotely interested in horror, and one plus I would give its common horror elements is that they can definitely ease viewers in before hitting them with the hard stuff. I can even see it growing more and more on me too with multiple viewings in the future.

If you hear three deep, bumping sounds, you are warned that Hachishakusama is coming for you. This eight foot tall woman has been compared to the Creepypasta legend Slender Man, due to her penchant for abducting children, but I think she may even be a lot creepier than the infamous tall guy in the nice suit. Her horror roots are firmly planted in the realm of J-horror, and as such, Hachishakusama lives in the realm of curses and psychological torture; her appearance means a three-day limit on your life, much like Sadako's 7 day curse. She is usually drawn with a white dress and long black hair that covers her face, further cementing the Sadako comparison. Where she differs though is her abnormal height, towering over her victims and usually appearing out of place in small rural villages of Japan. This sense of misplacement can make her victims feel insignificant and powerless even before her curse settles into the dark recesses of the mind. Hachishakusama's unique calling card, a deep voice that goes "Po, po, po" like deep thudding sounds, can also be quite haunting. Overall, a fun urban legend that may have you jumping at any similar sounds late at night.

Okay, I have one very important question: when the hell is she getting her own movie?! Seriously, this girl is amazing. I suppose each one of her performances becomes a mini horror film anyway, with even the judges fulfilling particular roles, like Anggun's frightened and cursed protagonist and David's laidback and disbelieving character that would probably get him killed first. I really love her imaginary friend performance the most I think, because it really shows off Riana's chops for tension and horror theatrics. Appearing in a Polaroid photo though or even performing an honest-to-god jumpscare on Anggun are also both incredible too and such are classic horror elements that it's impossible not to love when you seem them performed live like that. The sheer devotion to her craft and character astounds me, and she nails every aspect of the J-horror tropes so well, right down to the twitchy movements, sense of dress, the long black hair, even her soul-piercing gaze, and she combines them light Western horror elements too such as the Ouija and demonic possession and haunting.

She ended up winning the Asia competation but went out in the quarterfinals of America's Got Talent, which probably means all the judges and all who didn't vote for her there are cursed now. I know I'm safe anyway! Riana is a great character and horror creation that just may just make you a believer in the dark side of this world.

58. Undertale Genocide Route (18 points)
Nominated by: trdl23 (2/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-tAQHP_zCU" data-time="

Importance: 4
Fear: 6
Snake: 8

The capacity for video games to make us feel like monsters can vary from title to title and the tone can be different too. We probably don't really feel much slaughtering 1000s of unnamed NPCs in a GTA game, yet one Little Sister sacrifice in BioShock can make us feel dirty and even a little sick. Undertale on the other hands combines the two and makes every character in the game matter. Playing Undertale through the genocide route will make you feel things you thought you never would, especially if under the right circumstances. Playing through a pacifist route your first time will get you nice and acquainted with the game's entire charming cast, from its dungeon-crawling monsters to heavy hitters like Sans, Papyrus, and Undyne. Genocide route will then task you with killing all your favorite characters, everyone from Napstablook to Lesser Dog, absolutely no one is spared and you will feel terrible for doing it. No exceptions. Even if you do Genocide first, playthroughs for Pacifist and the game in general become irrevocably broken to always remind the player of their horrible misdeeds. Many games are meant to bring happiness and relief, or to pass the time, but Undertale destines itself to be something more and pry emotions out of the player they may not want to experience.

I feel like fear might be a little too high on that one. It's like, you feel grief and guilt, but there's nothing that... haunting in a fearful sense to me. It's not like the monsters you killed represent things going forward. The only thing truly scary in Undertale... isn't in Genocide.

You might have fear a little bit differently judged though, just my 2 cents.

Genocide is more creepy to me especially as towns get deserted and the in-game messages get more murderous.

As for Riana, I do think her quarter final act was the weakest out of her Got Talent performances (and it was weirdly cut short, creating assumptions that there was a technical mishap) so...yeah. And maybe her brand of horror more easily resonances with Asian audience.

Man, we're still in the bottom half and there are already a few movies and games I want to experience myself. Perfect for October, but I'm a bit short on time these couple months.

Whilst Pet Sematary doesn't stand on the same legs as great american novels like The Stand or It, there's a lot to be gleaned from this creepy tale that still keeps up people late at night to this day. Pet Sematary deals with death in various creepy and interesting ways, even including the death of Gage, a two-year old toddler, which of course devastates his family. Rachel, who fears and greatly hates the concept of death, also has experience with it from when she was young with her ill sister Zelda, who died from spinal meningitis. Rachel hates admitting it to herself, but she feared her sister more and more by the day thanks to a monstrous appearance that worsened by the day. Of course, there's also the titular Pet Sematary, which in reality is an ancient burial ground with cursed powers of resurrection. I particularly love how the Sematary looms over the entire book, and how no character who even sets their eyes on it can escape its reach and unholy power. Even Louis by the end of the book learns nothing from using the Sematary on Gage and tries to resurrect his wife with it to a fate we can only assume was the same as his son. Pet Sematary is regarded by even King himself as one of his darkest and most hopeless books, and the way it deals with such heavy topics makes the book a chilling read from front to back.

Importance: 6
Fear: 5
Snake: 7.5

The Man They Could Not Hang may not be that well-known in the mainstream Karloff canon but to horror aficionados it's a very enjoyable part of it with a few neat trivia facts to its name to really cement its horror legacy. It is the first of three films with similar plots all starring Karloff and each directed by Nick Grinde, lightly based on the story of John "Babbacombe" Lee who survived three separate hanging attempts. In the film, Karloff portrays a mad scientist obsessed with resurrection (sound familiar?) but is hung when his assistant's girlfriend finds out about his twisted experiments. Karloff vows revenge on everyone who sentenced him and is brought back to life using his experiment and Karloff executes his murder plot. The plot is simple, but the real draw here anyway is Karloff's performance. One very interesting thing about this film is that Karloff builds a machine very similar to the basis for open-heart surgery, as a science-fiction concept became reality. At only an hour, it's sure worth a watch for yet another great Karloff performance.

55. This scene from Shutter (18.5 points)
Nominated by: jcgamer107 (1/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmRxFSW3euM" data-time="

Importance: 3
Fear: 7
Snake: 8.5

This scene is absolute proof not all jumpscares are created equal. It's arguably the most memorable scene in Shutter and it's perfectly crafted in many ways to scare you at any moment. Note the quietness of the scene and the safety of both Jane at Tun's side and the general symbolic nature of beds and sleep. It slows builds up tension, with the pulling of Tun's blanket seemingly lasting an eternity before it hits with the jump, BAM! Most movies would be content to stop there, but Natre continues to be aggressive, turning the jumpscare now into real, tangible danger for the protagonist as he desperately tries to wake Jane up. Suddenly, however, it's all over. Under the bed? Nothing. Around the room? Nothing. Perhaps we can finally breath now. Shutter though continues its assault on the senses though, with one last jump violating the safety of where Jane should be positioned and coming as a true shock to the senses.

This scene is so good! We feel fear at many points here because the danger of Natre is haunting and omnipresent as the film continually pounds your senses with scare after scare and tension ratcheted up to 11. You're supposed to be afraid of Natre, and the film makes plenty sure of that. That's all you can really ask for in a horror film.

Glad you like that scene :) the idea of something hiding at the foot of my bed freaks me out, in part because of that set piece. you're absolutely right that it's extra effective because they don't just stop at her appearing at the edge of the bed - the terror remains and is possibly even cranked up as she crawls up the bed towards Tun. It's a solid scare in one of the best Asian ghost stories put to film. Also good is Natre running on the ceiling of the hospital towards Tun, and climbing down the rope toward him. She's a great ghost.

Importance: 4.5

In just a few short days, Momo sprung up and disappeared as quick as she arrived. And yet, it's hard to get her face out of my head. The first time you lay your eyes on Momo you will undoubtedly be at least a little freaked. Her giant eyes and horrid grin seem out of place in such a realistic image, and you may even think to yourself, "Could this be a real monster or even a person?" Then you dig a little deeper and learn of Momo's cursed phone number on WhatsApp and the suicide game associated with it. It all adds up to a little urban legend perfect for late night storytelling amongst friends. I really quite enjoy stuff like this, and I try to ignore a lot of the bullshit that also comes with it. YouTube clickbait runs rampant with Momo even today, as people try and use her image for cheap scares, fake pranks, and even faker calls. A lot of the fear factor with Momo gets greatly diminished not only by these dime store videos, but when I saw Momo's chicken legs, I laughed at the sheer absurdity of the entire thing. In reality, Momo is an art sculpture designed by Link Factory, which is cool, but makes Momo more of an absurdist statement rather than a fearsome icon of horror.

Whether you love her or hate her, the short story of Momo was also undoubtedly an interesting one either way.

53. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Series) (19 points)
Nominated by: Anagram (3/6 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCJoKDHRbDc" data-time="

Importance: 8
Fear: 4.5
Snake: 7.5

When the original 1992 film came out, the world perhaps wasn't ready for its subversive take on the horror genre. As its script was altered and changed, Whedon's vision wouldn't be fully realized and the film suffered as a result. Luckily, the satirical Scream came along in 1996, changing the face of horror forever, giving Buffy and Whedon the second chance they so desperately deserved. The series stars Sarah Michelle Gellar in her career defining role as Buffy Summers, a typical high school student who's life is turned upside down when it's revealed she's the last in line of a series of vampire slayers. Buffy subsequently tries to balance her normal life with her destiny, battling supernatural forces whilst trying out for the cheerleading team or going on dates. Buffy was specifically created as a subversion of the final girl, and is in the inverse in almost every way: blonde, promiscuous, and having a strong fighting spirit in her.

Buffy presents itself primarily as a comedy-drama series, but it could be damn scary when it wanted to be, rivaling the X-Files in memorable monsters of the week, such as the Queller, Der Kindestod, and arguably the scariest and most well-known, The Gentlemen. The fact that Buffy was able to bring significant chills to the table definitely helped separate the series from similar teen dramas, opening up accessibility to several different types of audiences. Buffy's strong and memorable cast also helped the series maintain relevancy. Characters like Willow resounded with early audiences as a loner, outcast, and vulnerable young woman, before developing into a stronger and more confident adult with latent magical powers and a relationship with Tara Maclay, bringing to television one of the first lesbian relationships. Fan-favorite vampire Spike started off the series as a one-off villain, but his Billy Idol-inspired look and complex emotions that defied the typical heartless vampire made Spike a permanent fixture of the series. Angel is another vampire cursed with a human soul, and his complicated relationship with Buffy as he's torn between two worlds is extremely compelling. Angel even ended up getting his own spin-off series.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer continues to endure and gain new fans even after the series has long since ended. It was creative, experimental, hilarious, emotional, and wasn't afraid to be scary when it needed to be. It came along at a perfect time in horror history where teen slashers ruled and a resurgence of vampire flicks rose to popularity, as Buffy challenged all sorts of long-standing horror tropes and created something new and memorable out of those tools.

Importance: 4
Fear: 7
Snake: 8

If the name of the first volume didn't already clue in you in to what you're getting yourself into, Locke & Key is a heavily Lovecraft inspired comic series with plenty of its own originality to go around. Written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodrguez, it details the story of the Keyhouse, which below it is a portal to another dimension filled with demons. The comic initially follows a very simple haunted house ghost story, as a family moves into the Keyhouse after the recent death of their father. The youngest, Bode Locke, finds the ghost door, separating his spirit from his body, and from there the insanity only grows worse & worse. In true Lovecraftian fashion, Locke & Key deals with the concepts of cosmicism and insanity and the hopelessness that nothing you do really matters in the end. However, some of the artwork and focus on children can feel light-hearted at times but it really makes the horror stand out a lot more when they really start breaking out the cosmic monsters. There are 6 volumes to the series and 1 collection of one-shots, and it's not a very long read. Several attempts have been made to adapt the series into a TV show or film, and right now it's in the hands of Netflix. Maybe one day something will come of it.

Following in the footsteps of the cult classic Fatal Frame 2 is no easy feat, but Fatal Frame 3 brings with enough enough quality-of-life improvements that makes it a very worthy sequel to its predecessor. Like previous titles, Fatal Frame III's main combat operation is the Camera Obscura, which can capture ghosts on film. The combat feels a lot more smooth and fluid compared to the somewhat clunky nature of previous titles but to compensate the ghosts feel faster too. This time around, Fatal Frame III follows the story of freelance photographer Rei Kurosawa, who ends up seeing her dead fiance in one of her photographs. Rei rivals Mio Amakura as my favorite protagonist in the series, thanks to her emotional storyline and overhang of grief that plagues every aspect of her mental state, showing in the game through Rei's dreams and through the game's antagonist, Reika, who contains other people's sadness in tattoos on her body. In a series full of depressing storylines, Fatal Frame 3 seriously goes the extra mile in showing us the torment Rei goes through daily. Some characters from previous games also return, and gameplay even varies depending on who you're playing as. If you love the previous Fatal Frames, you'll love this one too! It's the most solid gameplay wise, and its dark storyline makes you want to see through it to the end.

Have you ever had a near-death experience? Have you ever felt you like didn't belong somewhere? Have you ever thought you could disappear and it wouldn't matter one bit? The Twilight Zone's existentially chilling episode "And When The Sky Was Opened" dares to explore these questions, pushing human sanity to its breaking points, asking the question, "what does it really mean to exist?" In the episode, three astronauts, Colonel Clegg Forbes, Major William Gart, & Colonel Ed Harrington, crash their experimental spacecraft in the desert after blacking out and disappearing for four hours. Things are relatively fine at first, but Harrington starts to feel ill at a bar with Forbes, and after calling his parents, it's shockingly revealed that his folks deny even having a son at all. Harrington then disappears completely, and no one in the bar besides Forbes remember his existence despite him having a beer there only moments ago. This terrifying turn of events drives Forbes crazy, and even fellow astronaut Major Gart doesn't remember Harrington. Forbes himself starts to experience the disturbing feeling of simply vanishing, and in a blink disappears right outside of Gart's hospital room. Gart experiences the same thing Forbes was going through, with no one remembering Forbes, until Gart himself is gone next.

The mystery here has no explanation and your theories to what happened are endless. Was it Death correcting his mistake? Did it have something to do with their spacecraft? Perhaps they reappeared in another reality where they never existed? The fact that we don't know makes this just as scary to us as it does to the characters in the episode. Each of the actors, especially Rod Taylor and Charles Aidman, encapsulate both the euphoric and horrifying feelings of experiencing such an occurrence. There is arguably nothing more human than feeling like you matter in the world and having meaningful connections to the people around you. Take that away, and our sanity becomes fractured, as the three astronauts in this episode of The Twilight Zone found out all too well.

49. Clock Tower 3 (Game) (19 points)

Up until Clock Tower 3, the Clock Tower games were niche point-and-click survival horror adventures that relied heavily on established horror tropes, placing you as the final girl in a slasher film. With multiple endings, a memorable villain, and scary cinema-like scenes, the games built up a devoted fanbase that carried across two sequels. A flawed Clock Tower: Ghost Head, followed by Human Entertainment going out of business in 2000, seemed like a death knell for the series, but Capcom scooped up the licence along with Sunsoft and announced Clock Tower 3 in 2001. Whereas Clock Tower deliberately deviated from mainstream survival horror games like Resident Evil, Clock Tower 3 embraced a new direction, dropping the point-and-click affair for a fully 3D fixed-camera horror adventure. Along with this gameplay change came a new direction in tone as well, and the game became less slasher film and more experimental and original, with a time-hopping adventure and elements taken from anime including a magical girl transformation, comedic elements, and over-the-top exaggerated characters. While this may sound like a mess to some, the core gameplay here is still strictly Clock Tower, as each area has its own pursuer and you must hide and avoid them at all costs. The game still manages to be scary thanks to this, making the lighter elements more easy to swallow and providing a lot of fun to the overall narrative. Although the game remains a cult classic, Capcom's attempt to modernize an antiquated series from slasher cliches to batshit-insane originality still stands as one of the best sequels in a horror game franchise ever.

I don't think it even reached 100,000 overall sales if I remember correctly. It's a pretty rare title though not as rare as Haunting Ground or Rule of Rose.

Speaking of Haunting Ground, that is technically a Clock Tower spin-off, otherwise there's only been spiritual successors like NightCry and this year's Remothered.

Ellen Ripley remains one of the most famous movie characters ever and for good reason. She's a hardened final girl with a strong fighting spirit, but with deep issues and personality flaws that gave her character depth, challenging gender roles at a time when sci-fi and horror genres were filled with cliche and shallow female characters that were perceived as purely innocent or weak. Generally, Ripley is presented as level-headed and tough, and she fights back against the Xenomorph threat with smarts and ingenuity. Despite this, Ripley can be strict, cynical, and sarcastic, and her crew can find it tough to get along with her. Especially after her encounters with the Xenomorphs and being the last surviving member of her crew, these traits only amplify along with intense feelings of PTSD, but she never loses her tough spirit or heroic tendencies. That she can overcome multiple Xenomorph incidents and intense trauma only shows the great power of human determination. Deservedly, Sigourney Weaver's career-defining role changed the face of women in genre films forever, garnering multiple awards and nominations and living on as one of the greatest movie characters ever.

I've also played Maiden of Black Water which I would put between 2 and 3.

As the first X-Files monster of the week, Tooms started an intense and terrifying legacy of X-Files episodes that made the series as memorable as it was, saving the show from just being known as "that alien series". With his powers to "squeeze", elongate, and contort, Tooms proved a horror monster format could work on the small screen and be just as terrifying as a feature length film. The effects used to make Tooms do his squeezing magic are great for the time, and Tooms' slimy appearance makes scenes like the vent attack on Scully claustrophobic, disgusting, and of course, super creepy. Tooms is one of the only recurring monsters in the entire series, being released from confinement in his second appearance. Coming back even more hungry and dirty, it avoided retreading earlier scenes for even more impact scares before his eventual demise. This reappearance would not have worked for every monster which is why the series did it sparingly, but I think it further cemented Tooms' legacy and place in the series as proof the series wasn't afraid to get dark and absolutely frightening.

It seems like every genre and era of horror has its own parody or satire that comes along at the perfect time to magnify genre tropes and take them down a notch. Zombie films have Shaun of the Dead, slashers got Scream, and Young Frankenstein represented the first wave of horror, the Universal Monsters. Like every good parody should, Young Frankenstein shows much love for the genre, with a healthy does of cynicism to go along with it. The film is made almost exactly like a 1930s classic, including a black-&-white shoot, the style of opening credits used, and other techniques like fades to black and wipes. As the title would suggest, the film is primarily based on Frankenstein, but it's not about Victor this time, it's about his grandson Frederick Frankenstein, who inherits his grandfather's Transylvanian estate. This is one of Gene Wilder's all time great performances, portraying Frederick with the sort of manic that would make Colin Clive proud, but also imbuing his character with humor and neuroticism that makes him distinct from the classic mad scientist. My favorite part of the film though has to be Marty Feldman's Igor, an absolute riot who breaks-the-fourth wall constantly, probably has a fake hunchback, and has hilarious scenes, like when he stands in for dead heads, or how he insists on his name being pronounced EYE-gor. Frederick's relationship with the creature here is also unique, as he actually cares about his creation, even sacrificing some of his mental capacity to make the monster normal. To me, this seems like the perfect commentary on the name confusion between Frankenstein and the monster, especially since names are a heavy source of jokes throughout the film. To describe every hilarious thing in this movie would be doing it a great disservice, go watch it for yourself and immerse yourself into the one of the most fun and affectionate parodies ever made.

Seeming more like an X-Files monster than something out of Doctor Who, the Weeping Angels are terrifying statues who only move when they're not being looked at. Looking into them more closely, you will see they are filled to the brim with scary elements that are verily associated with tense horror sensations crafting some of the most honest to god scary moments I've ever seen in a TV show, especially one not typically known for horror. The Weeping Angels can even go so far as to possess TV screens as anything with the image of an angel starts to possess the qualities of said angel. Security cam footage can even cause the Angel to jump from screen to screen with ease before closing in on a victim. Weeping Angels used to be slightly more benevolent beings who's touch would merely send you back in time, with the time traveled being used as an energy source for them, until they discovered death was a far more wealthy source of energy. One really frightening possibility is for them to even become famous statues, like the Statue of Liberty. These guys work similarly to SCP-173, and in fact they were created around the same time. While The Sculpture is scary, they pale in comparison to the Weeping Angels just for the sheer potential number of them. Remember, don't blink!

The Yomawari Duology are two of the most creative and scary survival horror games I've played in a long time. Night Alone starts off with the one of the most shocking and cruel events in a video game ever, followed by a little girl's nightmares and anxieties come to life. Going back to the themes of kid-friendly horror, the cute but twisted graphical style of these games almost seem like kid's drawings of monsters that have become reality. In a Silent Hill fashion, the Yomawari games serve as allegories for mortality, loneliness, and guilt, as our little girl protagonist has to come to terms that her dearly loved companion has moved on to a better place, or in the case of Midnight Shadows, two friends being forced to reunite in a dark and isolated place. The Yomawari games have amazing art direction, like Lovecraft seen through a child's perspective which makes it all the more terrifying to look at. Midnight Shadows has some particularly great designs, like Mr. Kotowari and Malice. Gameplay is similar to something like Outlast with a hiding mechanic, but incorporates some aspects of Silent Hill including a semi-open world area. When you're hiding, there's this cool heartbeat mechanic that lets you know when it's safe, and adds a great layer of tension to otherwise rote hide-and-seek. However, it's the strong themes and twisted monster design that really make the Yomawari games truly something worth checking out.

What do you mean?

The Weeping Angels' gimmick is that they only move when no one looks at them. There was a cute little fourth wall thing where the audience only sees the Angels when the characters do, so we never see them move. In later episodes, the camera shows the Angels when the characters don't see them, so the audience can see the Angels moving around. I felt that took something away from them.

I don't think there's any denying at this point that Leon has become the face of the Resident Evil series. Just look at the massive applause Leon got for his appearance in the Resident Evil 2 remake trailer. He has become an instantly recognizable gaming icon with appeal for nearly all-audiences, whether you enjoy the vulnerable and unsure rookie cop of RE2 or the bonafide wise-cracking badass in RE4 and beyond. His character growth throughout the series feels tangible and real, as is his relationship with other characters in the series. His ongoing love saga with Ada Wong is the one true romantic subplot we have in the series, as the two get only closer and closer ever game despite their often conflicting goals. Similarly, Leon grows in confidence over each appearance, from a rookie to a professional, learning from his experiences in Raccoon City and with mentor figure Jack Krauser. Even RE4 shows Leon has some things left to learn, as he strikes out with women across the board and more seriously, becomes a little more cynical after betrayals from Krauser and losing several friends along the way. Skipping ahead a bit, that's when we arrive at last year's animated film Resident Evil: Vendetta, which shows Leon down and depressed, even suffering from alcoholism as the many biohazards he has faced wear down on him. Sure, this is the same movie where Leon also rides a motorcycle down a highway and blows up several innocent cars while fighting a pack of Cerberus, but the depth in Leon's character here proves his stories aren't anywhere close to done. I love Leon just as much for his corny jokes and badass scenes in RE4 as i do for all his character growth throughout the series.

And, as we go back to the beginning next year, back to Resident Evil 2, it's the best time to reflect on how we got to this point, from Leon's humble beginnings as a rookie cop who had the worst first day of all time, and revel in the origins of one of my favorite characters of all time.
