4. Outlast (video game) (27.5 points)
Nominated by: BetrayedTangy (0/5 remaining)

Importance: 8
Fear: 9.5
Snake: 10

God damn I love this game so much. I can end up getting pretty tired of all the first-person horror/stealth hybrids that come out these days, but Outlast mixes some old-school sensibilities in with the new-school of survival horror, and is capped off by a superb graphics engine and a polish rarely seen in indie horror (for example, I've never seen a single glitch in this game and I've played through multiple times). Outlast compels from the starting gate, with an outstanding presentation and direction, beginning with a late-night drive up to Mount Massive Asylum, which can be seen looming in the background throughout the drive. You grab your camera, and take a deep breath, because you just know nothing good is going to happen once you head in there. Everything about this scene is gorgeously scary, not only lit to maximize tension, but underscored by music that's in your face and chaotic. Upon entering the asylum, you can already feel a presence stalking you, and you appear to have come just as a massacre has ended, with gruesome leftovers placed all over the main hall of the asylum. Everything about the introduction brilliantly ramps up the tension until your first Variant encounter, and it's one of my favorite intros to a video game ever.

Outlast succeeds not just because of its atmosphere, however. Its found-footage camcorder mechanic makes the game feel personal. You truly feel like you're an investigative journalist, documenting the sick situations you end up in, and I don't just mean the scripted ones either. I often found myself zooming in on things you're not necessarily required to, just to maybe get a better glimpse of the horrors I was encountering. There's a part in the game where you drop your camera, and you best believe you feel pretty damn naked without it. It's like losing your security blanket and puts you a horrifying disadvantage, as the camcorder is your only source of illumination. It's like your light going out in Toluca Prison in Silent Hill 2. The game wants you to know this isn't some rinky-dink haunted house amusement ride; it is a grimy, filthy mental asylum filled with dangerous individuals and camera or no camera, you are not safe as long as you're here.

Speaking of dangerous individuals, Outlast has some of the most memorable antagonists of the decade. Chris Walker is my personal favorite, and the first you encounter (the first of many anyway). His hulking appearance and massive strength makes him a terrifying wake-up call to first time players. Doctor Trager on the other-hand conjures up memories of Clock Tower's scissorman, and his affable personality makes him stand out amongst the other lunatics of the asylum, mocking you relentlessly as you hide from his scissor's slicing grasp. Then there's The Twins, who are calm but dangerous, often closing in on your position in a pincer tactic and can repulse the player with their completely nude appearance. Each of these Variants make the experience memorable and nerve-wracking, and I think it's also something similar games in this vein lack.

If you haven't played Outlast you are definitely missing out on a superb horror experience. It's one of the most immersive examples in its genre and a game that always manages to be scary in a new way just as you're getting used to things. If you're generally iffy about these types of games, Outlast just might make you a believer.

3. 1984 (28 points)
Nominated by: handsomeboy2012 (0/5 remaining)
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/326569/1984-by-george-orwell/9780735234611/excerpt

Importance: 10
Fear: 9
Snake: 9

It's common to hear people say over and over that "1984 was ahead of its time", but you know what, it's because it's so true. It's right in the title of the book, a terrifying future that Orwell felt could become a reality. This tale of censorship, surveillance, and totalitarianism feels totally relevant in our modern day times, as we our tracked everywhere, whether online, on our phones, in store's using our credit cards, or even in our cars. The FCC and governments try repeatedly to throttle and limit our online experience (and is already a reality in many countries), while Youtube demonetizes videos with cursing, viewpoints that don't align with their own, or for any other reason that may be deemed "offensive". Our society often feels over-commercialized, over-sanitized, and over-regulated. This brings us to 1984 and the world of Oceania. Oceania is a superstate governed with total power by "Big Brother", with constant reminders everywhere that Big Brother is watching you. The list of keeps Big Brother in this position is seemingly endless. Everyone has screens in their homes that monitor your every action, work days are long and exhausting and boring, and you must do your "Physical Jerks" to ensure you don't even make the wrong facial expression at the wrong time. You may not even think, and I mean literally think, anything negative about Big Brother, or else the Thought Police will make you an "unperson", by altering your records and making everyone forget about you, either that or they will torture you into becoming an undying supporter of Big Brother. Big Brother is built on misdirection, and will fabricate any lie necessary to keep its people in check and obedient. One of its biggest means of control is called "Newspeak" which eliminates any words from human lexicon relating to freedom of thought.

Our main protagonist is Winston Smith, a perfect everyman avatar for the reader to attach to. He works for the Ministry of Truth (the ultimate of misnomers), rewriting historical documents to match party belief. Winston buys a diary to secretly write hateful thoughts about Big Brother, knowingly creating a downward spiral for his life, as his rebellious actions grow ever more dangerous. Winston isn't inherently rebellious, but he thinks of himself as nonexistant in the world, which triggers his desire to strike out against Big Brother and not care whether he gets caught or not. Winston eventually enters a forbidden relationship with Julia, a more naturally inclined rebel, but one who's smarter about the way she goes about it. Winston also strikes up a relationship with O'Brien, a high ranking party member who appears to be in opposition to it. In reality, everything Winston does to "rebel" just plays into the hands of Big Brother. O'Brien isn't a member of some idealistic rival to Big Brother, he's a member of the Thought Police and always had been. Julia, despite her rebellious tendencies and dirty-mindedness, immediately sells out Winston without a second thought, and though Winston lasts several months longer, even he caves to the pressure after being confronted with his worst fear, rats. In the world of Oceania, no one escapes Big Brother, and it now fills the loveless void Julia and Winston both have within them now. Orwell perfectly captures how hopeless such a society as this one is here, and you can never really be sure if your actions are truly your own, or just part of some deviously orchestrated plot.

Even as 1984 inches closer and closer to becoming reality, I don't think a world that controlling is really sustainable. History shows again and again, whether in Nazi Germany or the Stalinist Soviet Union, that these "totalitarianism" nations are built on shaky foundations and doomed to crumble. It's naturally in the human spirit to rebel and defy, and as long as there is that spark, we can keep Oceania from becoming a true reality. 1984 serves as a warning to us, and if we heed it correctly, we may continue to be free and uncompromised from the watchful eyes of power.

That's why I like to expand my definition of horror as much as I do. Just because something isn't about a big serial killer, or a vampire, or zombie, or a demon, doesn't make it any less scary. 1984 definitely scares because of its huge implications on society which can be a scarier reality than any physical threat out there.

I think the most tense and scary scene in a movie of any sort for me is in All the President's Men (coincidentally, the director passed away today). There's a scene where Robert Redford is confronting Deep Throat in a parking garage, and Deep Throat hears a noise. Even knowing the end of the true story of Watergate, I still always have this ominous, pulse-pounding fear of a shadowy, amoral governmental organization thinking it will stop at nothing to protect its secrets. And here's Redford, alone in a remote, dimly lit, abandoned building with no protection and a host of reasons why someone might want to take him out.

2. Candyman (Candyman) (28 points)
Nominated by: Pirate_Harris (0/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOcPVmS2-_4" data-time="

Importance: 8.5
Fear: 9.5
Snake: 10

As a child, Candyman was one of my top three most feared horror villains. I think it's why to this day I have a slight aversion to mirrors, and I used to always be afraid to try out the Candyman challenge for myself. Everything about Candyman is frightening to the imagination; his hook, his chest serving as a hive for bees, his long coat, and of course, his intimating stature and voice that could only ever be provided by the incomparable Tony Todd. In the original film, Candyman is an urban legend being investigated by Helen Lyle, a graduate student working on a thesis about the topic. Of course, Candyman proves to be anything but, and as Helen starts to discredit and attempts to prove the legend to be false, Candyman makes his presence known to continue his existence, as belief is what gives him the power he has. Being young, Candyman was scary because of his ability to strike almost anywhere and the quick way he dispatched people with a hook slice. Older now, Candyman scares for different reasons. He serves as a commentary on slavery and mistreatment of marginalized African-Americans, as he was killed for having a relationship with a white woman in the late 1800s. Much of Candyman takes place in the real-life CabriniGreen area of Chicago, reflecting the realities of the time, and the people who live there cope with their living conditions by invoking the legend, with even gang leaders taking on the persona of Candyman to increase their fear over the populace. The real Candyman feeds off this, and one of the other most frightening aspects of Candyman is how relentless and omnipresent he is. Candyman appears in broad daylight, and can only be see by Helen, making everyone think she's crazy and a murderer as friends and residents of Cabrini-Green die around her (for those who have seen it, the bloody crib is pure nightmare fuel). Candyman's potential for violence and psychological warfare makes him one of the top villains in horror, and provides an in-depth analysis of racial issues rarely ever tackled in a mainstream slasher, making Candyman a unique stand-out amongst his peers of Michael and Jason.

Tony Todd had a cameo in Hell Fest, which was cool (pretty decent movie, too).

Outlast is pretty solid. That horror game style where you have no weapons and can only hide was getting a little stale by that point, but the game's done well and there's some very cool monsters and settings.

The Elisa Lam thing is especially messed up if you've seen/know the synopsis of Dark Water, which came out like 8 years before this happened.

1. Stephen King (28 points)
Nominated by: Inviso (0/6 remaining)
https://imgur.com/gallery/DBVpM

Importance: 10
Fear: 8
Snake: 10

Stephen King is the definitive and most influential guiding hand in horror of the late 20th and 21st centuries. He's one of the best-selling authors in the world, with over 30 of his books getting a number one spot on the best-sellers list, despite some critical difficulties. The stories range from the straight-forward (Misery) to the ambitious (the epic Dark Tower series), and novels like The Stand, IT, The Shining, and Misery are considered modern-day classics. One of the best parts of King's work is their inter-connectivity, both in theming and in the more literal sense. King repeatedly draws on his own life experiences, and typically writes about outcasts, children coming-of-age, and authors. The fears he portrays are often psychological in nature, and focus on the human mind more so than they do the monsters. The books are often rooted in small-town traps and have an illusion of normalcy separated by a thin line with the fantastical. King makes you believe his stories could really happen, because the horror always come from a very human place and invokes a pathos that's inside all of us. However, with a few exceptions, King always provides hope and a way out of the personal traps we all create for ourselves.

There's a crap-ton of adaptations of his books and short stories, ranging from the hilariously bad (Sleepwalkers) to horror landmarks (Carrie, The Shining) to a film considered by some to be the best of all time (The Shawshank Redemption). King's work has parodied, satired, and homaged to in everything from The Simpsons to Friends, and one of the best homages is the smash-hit Stranger Things, and you can see King's hands all over it from its slick opening credits to small-town darkness. King has been there since the beginning for me; the first horror-related thing I ever remember experiencing is the 1990 IT miniseries when I was 6. It scared me silly, but it also ignited the spark that made me a horror fan for life. I'm absolutely indebted to King and his novels and films and miniseries and overall he could very well be my favorite horror creator ever. With a story for everyone, King is the perfect gateway drug to becoming a budding horror fan, and the landscape of horror would look pretty different right now if not for his outstanding influence, and that's something that creates legacy and an indisputable place in pop culture history.
