time for some personal villain rankings for the characters in this contest

Bowser >= Revolver Ocelot > Godot > The Boss > Sephiroth > Kefka > Dedede > K. Rool > Metal Sonic > GlaDOS > Monokuma > Master Hand > Ridley > Ganondorf

never played an RE game but D.C. Douglas is a top tier VA if nothing else

I didn't include villains who eventually become heroes or at least join your party or something (like Edgeworth, Donkey Kong, or Magus), but it's still a rather loose definition of "villain" since it includes Godot and The Boss

How can you love bowser and hate ganondorf.

I mean the average poster will either like both or hate them both because they have no complex writing or whatever.

Liking Bowser suggests you don't belong to the later group but then what is wrong with ganon.

I did, but Bowser is at best a funny lovable guy. He's not really that complex.

I mean I'd put him over Ganon but the gap feels too big.

Tbh I still need to play Bowser's Inside Story but I doubt it will change his personality that much.

I can't figure out why Jecht never became a bigger deal. Culturally I mean. Not enough screen time maybe (in X)?

To me the biggest problem with RPG Bowser is how Nintendo keeps framing him as dumb and ineffective.

And then you get Paper Mario where he actually gets to run the show... and he is amazing. Best villain. Best final level. Best final boss battle, with the best song.

We need more games with Bowser as the final villain. Granted Mario & Luigi 4 did that but only because he stole the show in the last second.

Eh, not really. They have a running gag in TTYD where he's always a step behind the action, but we got playable Bowser segments out of them that were amazing, so who cares.

You can personally help your bracket by pinging Stefanie Joosten on her Twitter or Instagram to get her to rally for Quiet since she's a gamer girl, and I feel pretty confident she'd do it.

I think whoever wins that match goes to the division finals, so it's not much of a jump to have Kefka/L-Block winning the finals, too.

I've got Big Boss though, but I'm fanboy picking.

I've got Quiet through round 1, was contemplating round 2 as well. I doubt I'd ever take her past that, but it's interesting to consider.

Jecht is good, but he's also... complicated. Like he's pretty sympathetic in a lot of ways but he's also emotionally abusive in how he treats Tidus. He's very human and he's a good character for sure IMO but his bad points are a bit too real for some people.

I think that makes it pretty hard for a character to catch onto unalloyed hype (like say Sephiroth gets). Even though the things Jecht does are less bad than most RPG villains, his behaviours hit home in a way that can cause a more visceral reaction. I've had conversations which have literally gone

"I really like Jecht, I think he's a fascinating character"
"Yeah, he might be a good character, but he reminds me of ____ and I personally can't stand him"
"Yep, that's totally fair"

Antagonists already face an uphill battle to become popular anyway, so...

Also for the record, I'm also totally with Leon on "Bowser > most > Ganondorf". Bowser is just really funny and effective in the Mario RPGs (Bowser's Inside Story in particular). If the only Bowser we ever saw was the played-serious one like in Galaxy he'd be low-tier, and that's what Ganondorf is in the games I've played (no Wind Waker here).

Additionally, Jecht's (meaningful) appearances in Final Fantasy X are almost all flashbacks and I don't think he ever gets to do anything particularly cool in them? Didn't get all the Jecht Spheres, admittedly.

Jecht is great because he's more human than most antagonistic characters you face, and it's kind of fascinating seeing your (and Tidus's) perception of him change as the game goes along.

Jecht is great but I confess I also never really viewed him as a villain or even as an antagonist. (Even if he probably does technically fit the definition of the latter?)

Well, he fits the definition pretty loosely since the stuff he does as Sin is against his will and nobody other than Tidus really views him as such.

I always considered Seymour to be the real antagonist of that game.
