You do make a good point about Pikachu. Most of Pika's popularity comes from the anime, not the games.

But then you have characters like Captain Falcon, who's more known for Smash Bros than his original games. Let's face it: nobody votes for him because they're an F-Zero fan. It may still be games, but it's also in that same "betrayal" of his origins.

About Geralt, wasn't his first appearance in English-language media one of the video games? That's a big difference compared to most non-game characters. But then if we're going by English-language debut, Pikachu shouldn't be allowed (anime came out first in the US), so yeah.

Finally finished listening to The Show.

Definitely some good points about Link. Link in a 1v1 match backed up by BotW and double GameFAQs votes is a scary force. Does Cloud even break 40% on him this year? Does Snake? Even if a rally rolls down everything else, Link is going to be on a whole nother level. Still not sure that's going to be enough, but throw in the Loser's Bracket too and it might be. The Loser's Bracket could be a major momentum killer for a rally; if they beat Link they have to get people to vote in "the same match" a second time, whereas if they lose to Link they lose a ton of support and probably lose their next match before even getting to the rematch.

However, it also sounds like it's a little clearer which rallies are likely to be successful this time. The DDLC subreddit is already linking to us, and Geralt just has to hang on for a bit until the Witcher devs notice. Both of them are also in joke fourpacks which helps a lot too. Sans is the only one I'm unsure of; I don't think that D Va or Draven or co. are going to amount to much really.

The ANH novelization doesn't count, since it was still based on the film being made at the time. Vader was created for a film.

I commented on these potential match-ups during the last Character Battle before. Back then, I said that I didn't want to see Link vs. Goku/Vegeta/Batman/Vader/Spider-Man because I didn't want any bonus matches to give us any information on the potential strength of these non-VG characters prior to their official contest debut. It will make for a far more interesting contest when we have no prior data on these non-VG characters and we have to speculate on their strength relative to known characters that have been in contests.

Link is still going to have his anti-voters, and those anti-voters are mostly registered users (who will get doubled votes). I still think Link is going to be stronger this contest compared to 2013, though.
