We call all mac and cheese "kraft dinner"

all tissues are kleenex, all adhesive bandages are bandaids, etc

...

Now, this SEEMS like a universal thing, people just not caring about specificity - but I heard TWICE this last week that this is a mostly Canadian thing so IDK, I'm asking.

I never heard the "kraft dinner" thing, but kleenex and bandaids are very common in the US. It is calling things by their brand name rather then their actual product name. It is pretty common everywhere.

i refer to tissues as Kleenex, bandages as Bandaids. But this US born gal assumes all mac & cheese is Kraft (the king of mac & cheese as a kid. Blue box with school bus yellow or go away).

I refer to medicines like ibuprofen as Advil, even generic. I'll just say 'generic advil'.

As a military kid, I think of the 'generic' brands as the black and white boxes, labels and containers from the base commissaries!

and homemade mac & cheese isn't mac & cheese, it's macaroni bake. (and yuck, except my sister's recipe)

Aspirin was originally a brand name, as was Heroin.

Escalator, Cellophane, Kerosene, Hovercraft, Laundromat, Linoleum, Videotape, Dry Ice, Trampoline, Thermos, Dumpster, Yo-Yo, Zipper, Touch-tone, App and App Store all used to be trademarked.

Jacuzzi, Zamboni, Frisbee, Lava lamp, Onesies, Popsicle, Scotch tape, Styrofoam, Tarmac, Taser, Velcro, Wite-Out, Super Glue, Rollerblade, Realtor, Memory Stick, Jet Ski, Hula Hoop, Hacky Sack, Freon, Comic-Con, Bubble Wrap, AstroTurf, Aqua-lung, Adrenalin are all still trademarks.

KD is KD, not all mac and cheese is KD.

Saying "Kraft Dinner" in Canada is like saying "Mac and Cheese" in the states. Both are the same products by the same company (Macaroni and Cheese dinner).

Also extremely cheap and disgusting. You reach a point in life where you can't eat certain foods anymore because they make you want to throw up and appreciate better foods.

But which items you use which brand names to define IS at least somewhat regional.

Like how, in the US, people in the South will refer to all soda (and screw you, it's not pop) as "Coke", even when it isn't Coca-Cola.

I think by this point Kleenex and Band-Aid has become pretty universal, but "Kraft Dinner" is definitely a thing localized in some parts of Canada. And I'd hazard a guess that there's at least a few other regional terms from other places in the same vein.

There's no Kraft Dinner in the UK but most people I know call all vacuum cleaners "Hoovers" and I have heard "Kleenex" as a generic term for tissues, as well. Though that second one might be from American TV.

Edit: We also don't have Band-Aids in England so we just call them plasters.

But that's not a thing here anywhere that I've encountered. Even your town. That's two more people using that terminology in Alberta than I've ever met, and I've met and heard a lot of drink orders in food service

The prairies may prefer coke a bit but coke is not an interchangeably used term for other pop

it depends what you mean here. soft drinks in general are "pop" not "coke", but that's not really what you said anyway.

it's true that if you don't know whether a place is sponsored by Coke or Pepsi, then you'd just ask for a "Coke" if you wanted a cola. But then, I'd assume you'd ask for what you personally prefer. no one who preferred pepsi would default to asking for coke.

I dont know about Canada, but parts of the southern US are like this as well.

everyone i know here in florida that's native to florida calls it soda, but if they want a certain variety "Coke" "Pepsi" or "Publix Cola".
But in restaurants, if you ask for Pepsi to drink and they have Coca Cola vendor, they'll say so. Fun watching people get huffy over Coke vs Pepsi. especially since I haven't drank a single soda in over a decade.

snowbirds and their kin call it pop usually.

I don't think that is the case anywhere.

As another Canadian on the prairie, I can also confirm that this is not the case. I have literally never heard anybody ask for a "coke" and not mean a "coke." They would probably accept a "Pepsi" but if you brought a Sprite, they'd be all, like, "wtf, breh?"
