And just like game 2, Jeffress loses it for us. Hes never going to say he fucked up though, hell claim it was luck again. Take responsibility for how useless you are and own it, use that to improve instead of making bullshit excuses.

How many times has a relief pitcher received the loss twice in a playoff series?

Counsell should have realized that Jeffress needs 3 days of rest right now to not self destruct. He just pitched last night, so of course hes going to give up a huge home run and lose the game.

So apparently the Brewers had 2.8 million people in attendance, and that was good for 10th in the league even though theyre the smallest market.

My only hope is that Attansio realizes that he can make a lot more money by filling the stadium all year instead of just during the big run near the end, so he tells Stearns to try and plug a few more holes in the offseason. We have some great, young starting pitchers in Burnes, Woodruff, and Peralta, and the hopeful return of Jimmy Nelson.

We can sit here and complain about the pitching all we want. It was the offense that let us down, again. Brewers just got 1 run of an early home run. Our offense couldn't get it done. Game 2 and Game 4 were games we could not afford to lose. If we just win one of those, we win the series.

If it wasnt for Jeffress, we win game 2 and arent playing tonight even with an offense that would rather strike out instead of putting the ball in play with runners on. The offense definitely shares in the blame, but Jeffress shoulders most of it. The worst thing is he wont even own up to it. He just says its all luck and nothing to do with him. Cant get better if you wont own up to your mistakes.

Of course, all that means is that we lose to the Red Sox even if Jeffress doesnt suck, but it would have been nice to see them playing in the World Series.

Too bad the Brewers making it there for the first time since 1982 isnt a compelling story like the Dodgers not winning one since 1988.

So, I'm late to this, but I want to voice my opinion on the whole salary cap thing.

I would argue that the main benefit of a salary cap isn't that you get competitive balance immediately, it's that you get competitive balance in the long term. The idea of the cap is so that it rewards timing hitting your draft picks with the talent you can acquire with your other cap space in order to be a complete team. You aren't supposed to be able to break away from the pack any given year unless you:

A) Are utilizing players who are vastly underpaid, either willingly, or because they're either on their rookie contract and/or are having a breakout-type year when their previous performance hasn't warranted that kind of money.
B) Spend out the wazoo on free agents/renegotiated or renewed contracts

Once you hit that state of being, where you're one of the best teams in the league in all aspects of the game, you only have a couple of years, if that even, before those players who are in category A start clashing with those in category B. The cap is supposed to prevent a team from being able to be consistently good on both sides of the ball just by spending money, there's just not enough to go around. This year's Rams spent like crazy this offseason, but you know when it's going to start hurting? When Goff and Gurley, who are Category A players, have to get paid. The Ravens won a superbowl, and you know what caused their downfall? Paying Joe Flacco. If a team is consistently good, like the patriots, it's because when it comes time for those A players to become B players, they have already found new A players to replace the old ones. Yes, Tom Brady helps, but if what we saw with Peyton Manning in Indy a few years back is any indication, you cannot be one of the best with literally no one around you. There has to be some action on the front office to fill those gaps, and some teams simply do it better than others.

In terms of the yankees, as has been mentioned, they actually cut spending this year. For the most part they rode young guys like gleyber torres, aaron judge, and luke voit to success this year. A salary cap would help to curb the Yankees success in the long run, but it would do little to nothing to impede them this year or the next couple of years, it's when those guys need to get paid as well when they start hitting a roadblock.

I think it's really easy to look at the big market teams and go "lolbribing their way to victory yet again" when in some cases it's just not true. Of course, in some cases sure, there's that history with those big names like the yankees and the dodgers that can attract players, or a case like tom brady and the patriots, then those can grant certain situational advantages that other teams don't have, but they do not make up 100% of why that team is successful, this year's yankees being a prime example.

With all this being said, I would still be in favor of a salary cap for baseball.

Additionally,
The fact Tom Brady has taken a significant pay cut below what someone of that caliber should've been making is a big reason why the Patriots have had the success they do. The Players Association I believe isn't happy with him

The Yankees have flexible spending to spend as they please because they have so many great young players who aren't being paid huge amounts yet. But they actually still went and spent on other players. They didn't need to spend as much to be successful BUT they still needed to spend a lot.

Compare to the Mets who have a similar core of great young cheap players (pitchers plus guys like Nimmo and Conforto) yet they don't spend on their supporting pieces and suffer for it.

You are also looking way too small sample size. One year. The more you have to spend, the more flexibility you have to spend on better players. Having a young core helps that. Teams with more money to spend still have a significant advantage over those that didn't. The Yankees haven't needed to spend that much, only some and that's what they did. "Some" is still meaningful though. "Some" is still a lot of money.

Here is an interesting idea/thread a twitter dude I follow had:

The thing though, is that in a salary cap system, it's okay to spend lots. You just can't do it often. IE the rams this year.

And to muse on the patriots some more, in hindsight I really wish the pats hadn't traded garroppolo because he would have been the perfect example of the patriots "out with the old, in with the new" concept that I was talking about. If he had worked out for them and became their new starting QB of the future, that would be a prime example of why the pats are successful.

But now we'll have to wait till the next QB the pats draft to see exactly how much of their success was related to Brady. If the next guy comes in and the pats suck, well then it was mostly brady. If he comes in and they're good, well then brady only played a part of it.

i dont think NFL contracts match MLB very well. Pats have done a lot of contracts based on value, and the union probably doesnt worry about Brady because the majority of the league is measured by positions that dont get measured against the QB scale. I dont think any of that follows or applies to MLB.
