Beyrl the War Cleric

Genasi (half Djinni, half Desert Giant)

Beryl is currently 15 years old which is very young for a Genasi,
and still a child for a Desert Giant.

At 13 Desert Giant children are allowed to first try to ride one of
the Desert Animals by themselves, it is a rite of passage that occurs
around the time of puberty. Beryl was always small even as a baby
compared to other Desert Giants, but by the age of 9 the difference was...giant.

There was no way for Beryl to ride even a Giant Scorpion at the age of 13 which
crushed him. His parents Brock and Cyenna comforted him and supported him, but
they used the opportunity to send him away, to Waterdeep. In Waterdeep was a
friend of the family, a Goliath named Blue. Blue was a blacksmith and he had a
daughter around Beryls age, and Beryls parents told him about her in order to
encourage him to travel.

Beryl believed they were embarresed by him, and that he would never be a Desert
Giant. He was too small, and puny. In reality, his parents had heard from the
sands and stone that an attack was on it's way, and that they, and the other
Desert Giants, would not survive. The only hope for their son, was to send
him away.

Beryl left, saddened, but hopeful for the future. He has a natural positive and
happy nature that is almost impossible to keep down. He traveled toward Waterdeep
and along the way he started to hear whispers from the stones as he traveled. Beryl
knew what this meant as his mother, Cyenna was the High priestess of Skoraeus Stonebones.
She had often mentioned the stones and sand talking to her, and he had witnessed her many
powers over the years.

One night, he had a terrible dream, it was full of violence and death, but he could not
remember any specifics after he woke. His body was hot, and his head was pounding
but he felt something was different as well. The stones were not as loud, but they
had more meaning and he felt a new strength flowing through him. He listened and
spent days almost in meditation, listening and learning. He found he could call
water from the stone, and even heal small wounds with a word.

This new power made him feel strong and fierce and he continued to listen and learn
as he made his way towards Waterdeep. A few days later, he was attacked by a group
of 3 goblins (very stupid goblins). They were small compared to him, but there was
three of them and they had ranged weapons. All he had was a wooden club to defend
himself with, and very little training in combat.

The goblins shot arrows at him, hitting him in the arm and thigh and Beryl screamed
in pain and anger. He heard the stones whispering though and recited the healing
word while rushing at the goblins...and most of the damage went away.

As he approached the goblins two things happened, first he felt a surge of sound
and new words appeared in his head. He recited them and felt the stone seaping
into his limbs, imbuing him with knowledge and skill he did not normally have.
This was amazing enough but in a brief flash of light, his club transformed.
Before it had been a simple (but quite large) wooden club, but as he charged
it changed, and when the light cleared, he held a large warhammer, with a wooden
shaft (though it may have been the same wood as the club, it was hardened and
covered in runes) and a heavy metal head. It was quite a bit heavier then his
club, but Beryl didn't slow and swung it at the first Goblin he reached.

THWACK!!! The warhammer connected solidly with the goblins quite hard head, but
the head was not quite hard enough as it shattered under the blow. The goblin
dropped dead at Beryl's feat. The two other goblins let out a cry and quickly
tried to run away, but Beryl felt a power running through him, an urge to fight,
and before they got even a few feet away, Beryl slammed his warhammer into the
skull of a second goblin.

THWACK!!!!

Much like the first, the second goblin collapsed, dead in one blow.
Now the whispers were roaring in Bery's ear, and he let them out.
Releasing them toward the last goblin as it ran. There was a loud sound, much
like a bell tolling, and the Goblin spun in a circle, clutched it's head and
collapsed.

The whispering quited and Beryl caught his breathe, pulled the arrows out and
then used another word of healing on himself. He felt good. This was his first
fight, but he felt like he was made for it. Much of the tension and worry left
him as he did not feel so alone anymore.

Beryl rested and then continued onward, eventually reaching Waterdeep.
Having never been to a city, let alone a huge one the size of Waterdeep,
Beryl was confused and overwhelmed, but he got directions to where most
of the smiths were and went looking for Blue.

When he got to the traders district and asked around, he found that Blue
had moved on, left the city, and nobody knew exactly where he went. Beryl
was at a loss, this was where he was supposed to go, what should he do now?

He decided to go get some food and headed to a local tavern. Inside, he ordered
some food and found himself listening to a lovely young Bard named Eerie.
She was looking for a bodyguard as she was going to be traveling and had an
aversion to getting blood on her maps (other then for decoration). Beryl was
intruiged by her knowledge and wisdom, her enthusiasm for mapping and the
obvious fact that she had a clear plan and purpose.

So Beryl approached her, asking her if he could join her for a drink. He related
his experiences and asked if she would consider him as her bodyguard and was
quite happy when she accepted. He did not think to ask about pay, but was glad
to have a companion, someone to travel with with more experience and direction.

Beryl and Eerie went on a few adventures and quests together, eventually both grew
more powerful. Beryl felt learned more spells from the stones and gained more
skill at combat. He felt stronger and more resilient. He found he liked traveling
with Eerie, he was learning alot and was never bored or felt alone. He worried
about his people though, and suggested that they head back to his homeland soon.
Eerie, did not know of many maps of the area, so agreed quickly.

As it would happen, a means of getting there quite fast happened along.

General things about Beryl that I would like.

First he is very young, I would like to play it that he has normal saving throws
from wisdom, but for any lore, or wisdom based skill check, he gets a -2 penalty
do to his age and inexperience. This could be balanced out at the DM's discretion
by a +2 to any such checks that involve anything stone related or information that
may be obtainable from the stone around him (such as a search for a secret
passage in a stone tunnel, or the qualities of a certain stone etc).

Second, he currently has no knowledge at all that his family and tribe
has been obliterated. The tribes name was The Anakim Sandriders, and his
mother was their high priestess. This could be incorporated at the will of
the DM, but it would not be widely known. They were nomadic and travled all
over, but were very rarely seen by others. Beryl would have a very hard
time finding them, and it wouldn't happen quickly.

He is currently 7"10 and about 340 pounds. He might grow about another each, but
he has pretty much fully matured physically.

Beryl's Warhammer is magical, but currently only equivalent to a normal warhammer.
If would like to have it....morph....as he levels up a bit if possible.
Instead of him getting a magical item randomly or something, the item gets
stored (not physically in the game world, but basically in the DM's piggy bank)
and the bonus is applied when Beryl levels up.

If most characters will have a +1 level by level 4 for instance, when Beryl
increases in level to 4, there is a special flash of light and the Warhammer
alters slightly, becoming a Warhammer +1. Other changes can happen as well,
elemental damage bonuses, larger size then normal (you do versatile damage 1d10
with one hand..or basically a +1 damage modifier..but for theme it would just be
that the warhammer grows to fit Beryl's larger size and strength perfectly).

Could be a way to make his weapon special and unique, and I would like eventually
(some time in the future) for him to discover it was his mothers weapon before him.
After he discovers they are all dead of course!

That is my basic background and ideas for Beryl, let me know if you would like
any other information or if there is anything else I should do. Other then that
I am ready for Sunday (well, I don't know where we are actually meeting lol, but
besides that).

That actually is not very in tune with the spirit of D&D and something you really need to discuss with your DM if you want anything like it. Funny thing is, I did offer something like that to my party, involving a ring that came with a direct contract to a specific god, but they all said no.

Gifts to specific party members are extremely difficult to do well, especially when mechanically they would be just as useful to others.

Yeah, you're asking for a magic weapon at level 1.
Which is fine, but you should ask for that.

Also, be aware that if you write your character as any kind of "chosen one" the DM will have all kinds of fun with that.

For example, in one of our campaigns we have a Goliath that claims he is "The Legend". Over the course of the campaign we have already come across 3 similar looking Goliaths, listening to the same given name and calling themselves "the Legend". Not to mention, upto a certain point their memories are identical.

Yeah you might want to tone it down a bit. When I was writing my 40k characters long backstory I realized I was making her too cool but she wasnt even a soldier yet. So I had to go back and level down the shit she was doing. The only thing I hope materializes is a magazine fed double barrel shotgun I made up. I still laugh about that

Yeah, the weapon is magical, but just acts as a normal weapon for now, and until the DM feels like I should get a better weapon basically. I know this DM though, and he is very loose with magical weapons (you can basically buy a +1 magical weapon with your starting gold as soon as you hit any town)...so it's actually more of a limitation for my character then a bonus. Warhammers are his gods chosen weapon though, and I'm playing it as him inheriting his mothers weapon since she (and her people) were slaughtered.

He isn't chosen though, or even a high priest etc, just this was my way of describing him coming into his powers and becoming a cleric. Hearing/listening to the stones is the way he prays and receives his spells.

Also, the group (not just the DM, it's a Coalition of 5 or 6 dnd groups run by different DMs in a same campaign and over all theme) have crazy rules for rolling your char so they are all very powerful. I'm limiting that at least a bit by taking penalties to my int/wis rolls based on his age.

The warhammer is for theme, not for a combat advantage, and I'll make sure the DM knows that. I'm also going to probably restrict the armor he can wear, requiring him to have it made specially or upgrading his current scale male (which he got from his people before leaving). This prevents him from getting full AC bonus from his dex now, and later, from getting +1 etc armor while the other players can easily do that.

He still does have avenues of advancement with eq though, as he will use a shield (so he can get magical shields), and he can get amulets/rings etc like everyone else (may have to wear only 2 rings max, on his pinkies though hehe...maybe on his baby toe and cna wear 4 that way?).

His AC (with his shield) isn't horrid at 18, but...again, I know this DM and he often has enemies that hit AC 20 fairly easy, even in the low levels (compensates for high stat characters with high AC and to hit enemies).

Should be a challenge, but he does have healing word and shield of faith, along with automatically getting divine favor (from war domain). He also gets 2 chances to attack twice a round per long rest with a bonus action). This gives him some oomph early on. He could for instance use shield of faith as his bonus action and attack the first round, then use divine favor and attack the second round, then use his ability to attack twice in a round (both getting the divine favor bonus damage) two times in a row if needed. He can always use healing word as a bonus action instead if someone needs it badly as well.

So basically he has a use for his bonus actions for quite a few rounds, making him fairly effective. He can buff any of his companions skill rolls unlimited times with a cantrip, and cast pass without trace on the party (bumping their stealth significantly) as well.

His Bio mainly was to flush out his backstory and make him unique and not just another random cleric:)

Which part is? I know the player based the character on something, but the DM separately came up with the multiple Legends, even allowing a separate party to kill one during a one-shot. (This one was more evil and the player was low-key freaking out about that, as this was before we learned out of character about the multiple Legends)

I basically linked to it.

In The Bard's Tale, the Bard keeps coming across people (mostly dead people) who were apparently told they were the Chosen One, and who then dropped everything and went off to rescue a beautiful princess (and basically got violently killed). Every time a bunch of little goblins come out and sing a song about it (a reference to the Oompa Loompa songs in Willy Wonka), singing about how much the Chosen Ones suck. And the Bard usually makes snarky comments about how stupid they are (and then loots their corpses).

The flip-twist in the end is that the Bard has essentially been the only real "Chosen One" the entire time, in spite of the fact that he hates the idea and doesn't want to be. Doubled down on when it turns out the princess he's supposed to be rescuing is actually a demon, and freeing her will basically doom the world, so being "Chosen" is pretty much the worst thing ever.

That being said, because The Bard's Tale is such a sarcastic, cynical parody sort of game, the Bard has the option in the end to free her anyway and doom the world, but basically getting rewarded for it in the end. While if he does the "right" thing, he saves the world but absolutely no one gives a shit, he gains absolutely nothing from it, and from his perspective the entire game has basically just been a pointless waste of his time.

Or he can go get drunk with some zombies and give up all pretense of being responsible for making the choice at all.

But yeah, basically I was referring to the idea that someone who is absolutely convinced that they're the "Chosen One" just keep meeting other "Chosen Ones" who are all equally convinced, kind of undermining the entire concept of being a "Chosen One" at all.

In broad strokes, that is exactly what it is yes. At first it was simply hilarious and then sometime later we came to the conclusion (out-of-character) that some cave is periodically spitting out new iterations of the same "Legend", it is a brilliant plot hook.
