What has been the game of the decade so far?(2010-2018)

For me, even though it was released in 2009, it has to be League of Legends. It has had the greatest impact on the decade, was the most influential. Really was the game that thrust esports into the mainstream, you even see Esports ads and highlights on ESPN now.

in terms of influence on the industry, i'd put minecraft and demon's/dark souls up there

But RDR is the best Rockstar game ever unquestionably.

I've been trying to tackle the top 100 of this top 1000 list I found; I find there are quite a few obvious picks there that are missing in this poll.

I think all 15 of these are worthy to varying levels, though I'd probably skip over the ones that are obviously revisiting old formulas when discussing the one 'big' game. (And Minecraft is in this weird zone of really being from 2009 but officially released in 2011 or something...)

To me, the ones that have left the biggest impact (as far as influencing future game design) seem to be Dark Souls and The Walking Dead, perhaps Journey. But I think the latter two are key examples of having more impact than truly being great games in themselves, as I'd easily argue that they have been outdone by their followers (Life is Strange and Edith Finch, for example).

So, for me, the answer is likely Dark Souls. While it's following Demon's Souls' formula, it did it to greater success and wider discussion. To be an era-defining work, something has to be both boundary-pushing and at the top of its field, and I think Dark Souls is the clearest example. A lot of the rest are just varying takes on the idea of 'open world,' which makes it harder to really narrow down to just one.

I dont think its even top 3.... but its god damn in the running (and definitely better than anything GTA ever did).

One thing right off the bat is last gen was pretty damn horrible for Nintendo. And thats something that ALWAYS has something high for best game of the gen easy, many times outright winning it. The amount of amazing games on SNES, N64, GCN, is staggering, and while the Wii didnt have tons, the ones it did have (Galaxy) are some of the best games ever made. Last gen their best game was a handheld in Link Between Worlds. And their best console game was probably Tropical Freeze. It should be obvious that that isnt winning game of gen any time soon. And filling that hole N left.... shitty Indy games....

So yeah, its easy to see why RDR is considered one of if not the best. Its going against terrible shit like Undertale and that stupid game where you sweep dust...

GTA V is very good but your mileage varies based on each character like Franklin is nowhere near as good as Michael or Trevor

But RDR I find John Marston to be better than all of them and the story was great from beginning to end with one of the best endings ever

The ENDING of RDR is better than literally every moment combined of 3, Vice City, San Andreas, IV and V.

RDR just kills it.

RDR is in this weird position for me where I feel like I didn't adore it as much in the process of playing it, but I think about it in retrospect a lot more than a lot of other, similar games?

It probably is just what I said above, by the time I played RDR, no matter how great it was, I had the same type of experience many times before. So even if I can recognize it as one of the best open world games, that doesn't hit me as hard as something like Dark Souls which feels entirely fresh.

Same thing with FPS games when I look through that list for the 2000s. Halo 2 and 3 being there just feels excessive, even if they clearly were both huge and had a lot of impact on their own.

Halo 2 being on any top 100 list that isnt top 100 worst is certainly excessive.

Halo 2 is a bad game. Please understand, Im not saying Halo 2 wasnt a good game, nor am I saying Halo the series is bad. I am saying its an ACTUAL bad game. Not mediocre, not disappointing, bad. Combat Evolved is one of the best (maybe the best) FPS ever and 3 was a very very good game in its own right.

2 is shit.

If I want to play a story-driven game, I'm not looking at Rockstar to deliver on that. RDR is definitely the best story they've ever told, but the bar for that is not set high.

I play Rockstar games to fuck around with the world, and RDR is....... decent with that? I recall having a blast lassoing people and dragging them around on my horse a lot. Beyond that, the stuff I remember most fondly is that guy on youtube that kept getting glitched people in his game, like that amazing donkey lady video.

In GTA5, I spent a good hour one time walking down the sidewalk, then jumping into moving cars in front of cops so they would pull the driver out and kill them. I loved hijacking bulldozers and picking up other people's cars and driving them down the road. There's just so much you can do to fuck with the rules of that game's world. I spent mutliple full days doing stupid shit that didn't make me any money or progress anything in the game whatsoever, just to make myself laugh, and it was a blast. And you could do a lot of that stuff online with friends.

When I look back on both games, I tend to remember the story in RDR as my favorite part, but I didn't have as much fun with that as I did with all my favorite parts of any of the GTA games.
