Less drunk driving incidents when the age is 21 vs. 18:

Not that I agree with it anyways, but unless you can change that it is going to remain 21.

Like its hard to get ahold of alcohol before 21 in this country.

Ive had people on my car complaining they couldnt go out with their friends because they had multiple fake IDs taken at bars.

Usually the same bar they had the first one taken.

They just order more.

Unfortunatly this. My (then)underage friends had a whole fridge of alcohol.

I'd say it isn't because of the fact that the legal driving age is already 14-17, depending on where you live. The two would come too close to converging. New drinkers and new drivers...scary!

Yep, the push by MADD years ago back in the 70s and 80s, is why all states today have the drinking age at 21. It's stupid and I'd rather have that age at 18, but that's just my opinion. Puerto Rico interestingly enough for a US territory, still has their drinking age at 18. That really surprised me, when once I randomly looked that up on wikipedia.

imo drinking age needs to be either removed completely (so it's normalized and people don't lose their minds as soon as they're able to drink) or moved to 25.

It's 18 in Alberta. I don't think there is a noticeable difference in drunk driving rates because of that. If anything, it's because of stupid redneck culture.

18 year olds that will drink and drive are probably also the ones that wouldn't care what the drinking age is.

Lower the drinking age, raise the consequences.

Immediately suspend license for minimum one year, regardless of age.

People should not be allowed to die for the country at age 18 and not be allowed to decide if they can drink alcohol or not.

Or raise the minimum draft age to 21.

The draft hasn't actually been used in over 30 years. Men register at 18 (because sexism), but nobody has been called.

How would raising the age of involuntary service save lives when involuntary service isn't used in the first place and enlistment costs remain the same no matter when you register somebody? >_>

Why should they be the same? There's no logical justification for it. It might make sense for voting and military service because both are citizenship issues, but health issues are unrelated.

It's crazy how many people drive without licenses already. Making things more illegal is probably not going to help much at all. Lowering the age and making things less illegal might make a difference but probably not a positive one sadly.

No easy solution here, but perhaps something that tested BAL at bars, where you can't drink more then x without showing a pre-paid ticket to take you home or something....not making it illegal to drink, just illegal to serve to anyone who is past a certain point.

Getting that passed would be almost impossible though.

Should be a way to make it safer for everyone and then drop the legal age as part of it, but real thought and effort would have to be made, and also.....our prison system is for profit quite often, and you would be AMAZED at how many people are actually in there due to alcohol in one way or another. If something actually makes the people in power money, it's probably not going to change, even if it ends up costing many people their lives, their freedom etc.

I feel like that's a bit of an oversimplified correlation. There have been a whole lot of pushes against drunk driving besides just changing the drinking age,. It might help, but getting rid of drunk driving is much more of a cultural thing than anything that can rely entirely on trying to keep younger adults away from booze.

Personally, I think the whole absolute prohibition idea is fundamentally flawed. It'd make a whole lot more sense to allow drinking at younger ages (such as 16) with parental supervision (or supervision by a parentally-appointed proxy). Minors are going to drink no matter what the law is, so you might as well get them drinking in a controlled environment rather than having them hide away somewhere with only their peers to guide them. That's a much healthier way to learn about alcohol, even if you keep the current drinking age as the minimum for solo drinking.

Given that people ALREADY drink underage and drunk driving is still an issue later in life, that suggestion makes no fucking sense.
