I don't understand. Back in the day, games used to be <650MB, and before that, maybe 16 or 32MB. Even now, there are games that (I think) are like 5 or 10 GB. Why do we need games that are 100 GB or more? What is actually IN these games? Is it just put towards extremely detailed, and therefore memory intensive, textures, and 4K graphics?

It seems that only Nintendo has good compression technology among the big name devs these days. The others need to start investing more money in compression technologies (you know essential R&D) over microtransactions and loot boxes.

The biggest culprit is uncompressed audio.
That said, textures are more detailed and takes up more space, especially 4K textures.
Models are also more detailed, using more polygons which makes them bigger in size, but the difference is not that big.

The cut scenes and audio have a lot to do with it. Compression would help too.

High resolution textures, audio. Even compressed they take up a shitload of space.

Lack of compression. They could totally fit these things on CDs if they needed to.

That would hurt their external storage sales.

Also lack of compression.

Games are compressed.
Killzone: Shadow Fall is 290 GB uncompressed and they compress it down to 40 GB.
There is no reason for them to compress it harder once it fits on a disc.

Good on them. Clearly not every modern game is uncompressed but there's a lot less focus on compression compared to years ago. Now they dump the responsibility of having enough HDD space onto the consumer.
