The entire hour long premeir was such an absolute nothing waste of time other than getting to see all the old characters be cool in GGO for 2 minutes. I don't think I'm a diehard SAO fan, for the record. I almost didn't continue the series after season 1, and I still never watched either of the movies which frankly I don't care about at all. I have significant problems with large stretches of the show, and I wasn't particularly excited by the prospect of getting 48 more episodes of SAO (though it's turning out good so far!). It was more just like "oh so there's more SAO I guess we'll watch it and see how it turns out".

My brother and people I know who read the manga said the first half of S3 ends right at the end of an arc in the manga.
