I have two computers and I'm looking to upgrade both of them. Due to trying to seem like I know what I'm talking about while actually having no clue, I have learned nothing and know nothing about what computers need or what parts to get or anything of the sort. I have no idea. What I'd like is to get them both upgraded so I can play Fallout 76 when it comes out. I'd like to get them both up to a point where they can run Overwatch and Fallout 4 without having to be on the worst graphics and without any lagging, screen freezing or graphical hiccups. Let me know what you need to know in order to help me find out how to cheaply nudge my older computers into being just good enough to play Fallout 76 on medium graphics. Thanks anyway.

First off, what's your budget? I know you said you want to do this cheaply, but a dollar figure will give me/us a better idea of what's possible.

What are your specs for each of the machines? If you don't know what that means or how to answer it, download this: https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy

Run it on each of your computers and post a screenshot of the summary screen it provides. That'll give all the info necessary to know what needs upgrading to play the games you want to play.

Hey thanks a bunch.

I'm not really sure, I can get this stuff one at a time. In my mind a single one of these 'new parts' or graphic card or whatever I would need would be around 70-120$? Is that too cheap? I just don't want to end up spending a lot of money but I could if I had to.

Thanks so much! Something like that is exactly what I was looking for.

Both systems pretty much need full part replacements. You can technically get away with like min requirements updating the stuff in the second PC but that's not something I'd suggest doing.

Ballparking $650 per a machine given the current state of PC parts right now if you just want to play at med settings. (My estimate does not include a chassis which you might need depending on the ones you have now).

Yeah sorry to say it, but Kokoro's assessment is on the money. Neither one of these machines is really within upgrade range for what you're looking for. If you want to play those games with mid settings, you're looking at an all-new build.

But don't worry! A fresh build doesn't necessarily have to be super expensive, and the parts list FBike just linked to is a fantastic example. With those parts, you could slap together a machine significantly more powerful than a PS4 or Xbone for just about $500.

If you're at all nervous about building your own computer - don't be! It's actually quite easy to learn and do, and there are a ton of guides on how to do it. Plus I'm sure many folks on this board would be willing to help, myself included when I have time to post.

Wow dang, I thought it was bad but I didn't know I'd need to basically scrap both computers. The second PC is way newer, but it didn't stay good for as long as I thought it should.

Thanks so much for your help. This build called 'The Crusher" will run Fallout 76 perfectly fine? I'll have to work on getting the parts to build two of them. I am super nervous about building a PC, I'm worried that I'll end up with just a both of useless parts. But I'll get started on gathering the pieces necessary. Thanks again. You guys have been a big help.

Consider something like this

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/KokoroAkechi/saved/GtHpGX

This is more comparable to "The Exterminator" variants.

Part choice reasons

CPU: The Ryzen 5 series is a top notch midrange option.

MoBo: The Asrock fatality series is a good budget board that can do some of everything you need. You're not breaking any record for anything but it's probably the best value for the price point.

Ram: Team is a relatively unknown budget brand that makes quality ram. The timings on this are not amazing but they offer life time warranties (as all ram should come with).

GPU: The 580 8GB is one of the best graphics cards for the price. You'll be able to run modern games at 1080p pretty easily with this even at higher qualities as long as the game is properly optimized. It's a lot better than the 1050ti for only marginally more.

Case: NZXT S340 has been the best case within the price range for a long time. You can get it on their website for 50 dollars for the white versions and 70 for the others. It's a mid size tower, which means easier cable management and is generally more forgiven to new builders over smaller mini itx types.

Power Supply: The supernova series is one of the most reliable PSU lines I can think of. The 550w comes with a massive 7 year warranty. Not only that but it's fully modular (which means all cables are detachable) so you only need to use the ones that actually do something for your system.

ALSO

Don't pay attention to what it says in the crusher info. Base consoles (at this point base ps4 and xbox one S) are really old now and a lot cheaper. It's much fairer to compare them to the comparatively priced PS4 Pro and X Box 1 X, which will have graphically performance that is as good or better in a lot of cases.

The truth is console power has never been closer to PC price points as they are now.
