This was the one I went to several times, but was put off by having to "report" to the reception desk first, not knowing quite what it would entail.

Anyway. I went to the desk, and the young girl there gave me a form to fill out. I had to give my name, full address (this really was quite a comprehensive section), and a few other things. She also listed a number of rules to observe, some of which I didn't really catch, but one was no photographs, and you're only to use pencils "once inside", not pens. I wondered what kind of top secret organisation they were running at this point. I thought that was it, but then there was also a well hidden button that opened the door to the centre proper, which the girl explained to me.

And then I was in! What did I see once I got inside? Mostly rows and rows of reference books on the area I live in (which is basically what the centre is for), along with microfilm viewers (go on Wikipedia if you don't know what this Stone Age technology is), and various PCs, although I'm not sure if they had something specific on them, or just for using the internet.

That was it. A bunch of reference material, when I could probably find a ton of similar stuff on the internet at home. I mean, it was comprehensive, lots of detailed stuff from religion in the local area to other things, but they treat it like it's really secret, and also, that it's of intense interest to me. And that's the thing - there were 10 or 15 people in there, hunched over various books, transcribing who knows what. Wtf. Who are these people? Are they all working on their history PhDs or something? There were also at least 2 people behind the main desk, so this centre obviously expected a lot of use.

I looked around for about 10 minutes, then signed the fuck out. What is this place? I love obscure knowledge about pointless things, but even I didn't really see the value in this centre.

Two_Dee, this is serious business.

I think that must be the most pointless building on the planet, and that includes the museum for the history of cement.

But I can get a bunch of articles about almost any subject from the internet? Why would I need that fucking stupid heritage centre, which you have to spend 5 years and several background checks getting access to?

Not everything is on the internet. How old is your town? If you need special access it could be very old and specialized information

I dunno. Very old, it's in Britain.

But it's not just the pointlessness of the centre, or even that combined with the security measures. I saw 10 or 15 people in there, doing research or whatever. I couldn't believe it. I suppose some may have been doing education courses where they needed specific research, but many were middle-aged, and presumably were just people with WAY too much time on their hands (like me, but with less access to fun things).

What a waste of a building. And it's huge. It could clearly be put to much more productive use. Come to think of it, over half the building wasn't even available to the public, so that's stupid. Must be where they keep the materials relating to UFO crash sites in the area I live in.

I know you live in Britain. Doesnt necessarily mean the town is old. And theres different levels of old too.

The older people could very well be researchers or scholars, and not just hobbyists.

I mean some real human history has happened in Britain that I feel has been undiscovered. Like really old stuff. You dont think its good that people are looking into that?

Well, I sorta agree with what you are saying.

But that whole place is just kinda...I don't know. Also, another sad little thing I didn't mention, it's way out from the town centre. If you live in the centre, it's about a 25 minute walk, and if you live on the far side of town, it's about a 50 minute walk. And yet, clearly people in that room cared enough to travel all that way.

The actually like the museum that's also in my town. Lots of fun little things to do, and the various parts of it are much more user-friendly, rather than just rows of books. That's how an historical building should be, you know? Plus, it's inside a former castle. :D How cool is that?

The fact that there were people actively using this place means it probably has more reason to exist than Sunhawk does tbqh

You know, I remembered something extra.

One of the stupid rules they imposed on me. I don't think they even allow you to take bags in there. So you don't steal their stupid 2-bit books, I guess. The person didn't actually say you couldn't take bags in, but said something like "You haven't got a bag, so that's okay".

Stupid heritage centre! I should spend some time trying to get it shut down.
