where are you guys getting your number from? You get a lot more than 175-200 million if you win the jackpot

For instance I live in wisconsin, if I won and took the cash payout of 548m it would get taxed as income by both federal and state. federal got lowered to 37% and my state's tax would be 7.65% for a total of 44.65% that includes the 25% tax. The government automatically collects that 25% when you win, but it is counted towards the 37% that you owe, not in addition to it. So my personal payout would be 358 million. a far cry from 970m sure, but if I take 8 million for personal expenditures and play money and invest the rest expecting modest returns averaging 5% after 30 years (the time it takes to pay out on the larger amount) you could have 1.5 billion. even if you decide to take out some once in a while you can still get to a billion easy enough once you have that kind of cash to start.

The chances of winning both the mega millions and the powerball are insanely small (1 in some quintillion or something crazy). We are using just the number if you win the 600 mill mega millions portion (which is basically the best possible option) and even then we are saying ONLY you win, which is statistically extremely unlikely.

The payout is about half (a bit more then half but whatever)..or at least that is what it said on a website that talked about it, perhaps it has changed a bit (think someone said the payout was actually more now), then your taxes (yeah you can get it down to only 45% or so), means that an original 600mill ends up being around or under 200 mill.

And again with a number this high it's VERY likely there will be more then one winner. Meanwhile the point was that even if it was only you, you could still never buy every possible number and come out anywhere near ahead (you would be way behind) and the more people that win, the worse off you would be.

Basically it's just throwing money away for million and millions of people with the very very very small chance that you will be the one to get a portion of that money back. Everyone would be way better off just putting all the money into a pot and having a random SS# drawn that gets the money (if they put money in the pot only). That would work out way better AND all the money would go to a person. In addition, you could have it be set up as a gift (Everyone is gifting the winner) which would help with taxes as well.

So your 0.0000000000000000001% chance to win is now 0.0000000000000000002%

Wowee!!

Omg. I'm practically spending my money already cha-ching!

but why wouldn't you turn religious? the odds were astronomical

Why would I

aren't the odds like 400 mil to 1? you have millions times chances higher of being struck by lightning

the jackpot winning ratio is on the back of the ticket. I want to say it's around 1 and 353 million. but some one wins it. it's most likely not going to be win you, but it still could be you if you play.

people have spent more money on loot boxes or xp booster or loan money to a friend. it's $2 for a chance of not worrying ever again. don't get me wrong if you spend $50+ on every lottery day it's wasting your money. But then again people spend $1000 on pokemon go a month.

It would actually be taxed as prize money, not income. There's a bit of a difference there. Prize money and bonuses are automatically taxed at the highest tax bracket regardless of whether your actual income is in a lower bracket.

I get paid a quarterly bonus at my job. That bonus is taxed much more heavily than my regular income. My net bonus ends up being barely more than half my gross bonus.

Til, thanks.

Sorry wolfy, I think we are talking about 2 different things. I am only talking about the 970m prize from megamillions which has a cash option of 548m. But even if you win in New York the worst state to win it in it would still be 297m so I am not sure how you are getting less than 200.

That said, I am not talking about the likelihood of winning. If you buy a ticket you should expect to lose, but 2-10 bucks (depending on how many draws it takes to win when it is this high)every months isn't going to break most people.

but...why? Is $358 million really not enough for the rest of your life and probably most of the rest of your family/friends' lives? With that, I could give all the people close to me 1-2 million and I would still have more than enough to last the rest of my life.

I do feel like you're talking more about just getting to the amount of money you were actually supposed to win since taxes on these things are stupid.

I would go Brewster's millions on the prize money. You are right I just meant that in response to the people complaining you don't get the 900 million so it's not worth it.

With that amount you could also give 5-10 family members 5 million and not have to worry about giving away too much.

But you won't.

You can pretty much group your odds of winning with your odds of dying violently at like 1/10000, and then 1/1000000 for winning the lottery.

You might hit that 1/10000, but you have a 1/100 survival rate anyway at that point anyway.

Just because you can find something that is an even more ridiculous expense does not justify it. I don't waste money just because some rich assholes drop like 20 grand in one casino gambling binge. I don't smoke and I could easily justify almost any expense with how much some waste on cigarettes.

Haven't looked it up but doesn't the increase each time represent a portion of the money received the previous time?

So basically over 600 million tickets were purchased and nobody won.

Not sure what the percentage is, but man, I wish private citizens could set up lotteries like this. Come on everyone give me a $1 and you'll have a chance to win the entire pot (minus just 10% for my efforts!!!).

I knew a guy who ran a Football picking league. He charged $250 a person and you had to pick every winner of every game throughout the season. Whoever ended up with the longest streak won the pot. It was usually $300,000+. He didnt take a percentage, but a tip was appreciated. He made 6 figures doing that, by driving from New York to Florida selling it every year.

How the fuck wasn't he caught yet the other guy was?

It was literally the only thing he did. And he had been doing it a long time at the time. So it was probably word of mouth build up.

Plus, it was probably mob related.
