Short Review Valkyria Chronicles 4 is often highly ambitious in its storytelling. But it's also highly cliche in other areas. The characters are more like VC2's than VC1's in that - even though it's not set in a school - all the characters feel like tropes. In fact, pretty much all the classes have just two models per gender, which leads to some pretty obvious palette swaps. Squad E isn't fit to lick the boots of Squad 7, to be honest. There's no Vyse here. There's not even a Jan. But I guess we take what we can get to avoid stuff like Valkyria Revolution.

A lot has been made about the game's sexism - It's basically true that this game feels like it was written by virgins. The males are stupid and the females are into cute stuff and getting married. I'm not saying all narratives have to feature strong, progressive characters, but they shouldn't only be generic waifus. VC1 was overall better in this regard though it admittedly wasn't a strong suit there either.

Why am I doing this? I dunno, it's contest season.

38. Fleuret - Shocktrooper - Blonde with a French accent and into swords. Voice is super annoying. Has a potential where she SOMETIMES WON'T SHOOT WHEN YOU TELL HER TO. Oh yeah VC4 has these. You can sometimes get rid of them by doing their side missions. Not a bad idea, but holy crap, potentials in this game are even more broken.

37. Mabel - Sniper - A "tough girl" secretly into cute things. Yawn. Next.

36. Neige - Sniper - Girl next door type openly into cute things. Why is this fifteen year old girl a sniper?

35. Leonhardt - Sniper - Typical "upper class noble" schtick (see Suikoden 1 & 2 for the only good examples of these characters)

34. Nico - Scout - Blonde girl/boy who's super religious. Another character with a super annoying voice.

33. Rebecca - Engineer - Fairly generic character with a potential where she will sometimes refuse to heal a character.

32. Vancey - Shocktrooper - Alcoholic with flashbacks. YO PEOPLE, PTSD AND ALCOHOLISM AREN'T FUNNY, stop playing them for laughs.

31. Godwin - Scout - Ugly as hell. Not sure what else to say here. Kind of a bad dude.

30. Millennia - Scout - Maiden in search of her MIA fiance. Snooze.

29. Jimmy - Lancer - Literally the most boring character ever made, but purposefully so? It's kind of funny how the game makes jokes about how he's a walking death flag but yeah, that's basically it.

28. Rosetta - Scout - "Presents as Female." I'm not going to even get into how problematically lazy this character is but suffice it to say she is not a model for trans characters in videogames.
