.....and it will do that obnoxious "chirp" every 60 seconds or so.

Are these people deaf, dumb, or just have an extremely low standard of living?

I don't know about you guys, but if I had an extremely loud "CHIRP!" sound happen in my house/apartment every 60 seconds....it would become priority #1 to get it to stop. I would not be able to sleep. I would not be able to read a book. Play a video game. Eat a meal. Watch a movie. What kind of sick person would be able to do those things? I would get in my car right away and drive to the nearest place that sells batteries and I'd spend $5 to get a new 9 volt to fix the problem. Simple. Easy. Problem solved. Move on with life.

There's someone in the building next to me that has a dying smoke detector....and it's been doing it for almost a month now. I know for a fact that someone lives there, because when it's hot they open their windows, and you can hear the "chirp" even louder than usual.

But I feel like I'd look like a madman if I went from door-to-door, knocking to see who has the dying battery, and offer them a free 9 volt just to get it to stop.

Just one of those little annoying life things.

I'll also occasionally see a YouTube video of some random topic happening in someone's house.....and you'll hear that chirp in the background.

Could be a deaf person...probably is....or someone with severe hearing problems and a hearing aid or something, cause yeah....that'll drive anyone crazy in no time. Heck even neighbors. I'm surprised you all didn't get together with pitchforks by this point.

If you live in an apartment complex, call the office/maintanence and tell em about it and they will handle it. It's eventually a fire hazard anyway...so they pretty much have to. It won't stop for a VERY long time and by then...well.....you'll all be axe murderers pretty much. (those of you who are not already that is).

Yup, that's pretty damn annoying. During the day I might be able to ignore it with my games on. At night, I'd be insane after 5 minutes. And if they're going to 'fail' it's ALWAYS at night.

When I worked for [major mobile phone company], most of the people calling in had not changed the batteries. Most of them were depressingly stupid, too. People would argue for minutes on end that the iPhone didn't have a home button, or that because they paid the bill, they owned the account that was not attached to their name or SSN.

I have linked detectors, where if the batteries of one are going, they all beep, but in sequence starting with the one with the low batteries, then the others. Very handy. I use rechargeable batteries, so I always have some ready to pop in, and the near empty ones go in the charger. Not difficult, if even I can manage it.

Just pay attention to which window is open when it gets louder so you know which apartment to go to. Don't even knock, just tape a battery to their door with a bit that says "Hey dipshit, change the battery in your smoke detector"

My brother had a odd one he changed the batteries in his and it kept doing it would only do it if it got below a certain tempature though as turning the heat heat on would stop it or turning the ac off but not as quick.

But yeah it drives a person mad. He didn't even bother trying to fix it aside from changing batteries until I was spending a weekend over and I yelled loudly while everyone was sleeping that I would take a hammer to it.
