Seariously......

I went today to see the deals they had. Have a friend who needs a bed. All their beds are 60-70% off!!!

Good deal I think, I'll head over and see if they have any generators for me, and check beds for him.

This sears has no generators at all, so waste of time for that, but I head over to the bed section. There is a VERY bored girl standing there, just waiting for ANYONE to come by and speak to her, wishing she had some drugs to numb the pain of the endless hours of dullness. I say hello and her eyes light up....a customer!!! I explain what I am looking for and her face kinda falls, like she knows whats about to happen.

She leads me to the back of the area, to show me the "cheapest" mattress they have...this is just the mattress mind you, not the frame as well. With the sale....WITH IT.....the mattress was $560 or so...........

Yeah, it was normally over 1k without a sale....I don't know anyone who would pay that much for a mattress that is freaking insane. Crazy.

Also they are currently running a sale throughout the store where if you buy something yo get it's equivalent off in sears points (half right away, half in 2 months).

Is the store even going to be there in 2 months for customers to spend the points?

Worst sale ever...and yeah, if you charge that much for everything, nobody is going to buy your crap. There is a reason I have not been in a sears in over a decade I guess. Seems like that same reason affected most of the rest of their customers as now...they are closing.

I can only imagine it's actually a good thing considering the glassy, numb, almost semi-dead stare of the employees I saw today. I know there are worse jobs, but....the brief visit today seemed like a short trip into hell. Might be the scariest halloween exhibit I have ever seen in fact.

When they closed in Canada people said they jacked up the regular prices before applying the sale discount. Overall the sales were not that great.

I think we paid for our memory foam super comfy awesome amazeballs California King mattress about $400 or $500, but of course it was on sale (I mean, I always look for the best deals and always have). It was super comfy and this was a good 20 years ago. Switched to the posturpedic beds (legs/head lift seperate from each other etc), about 9 years ago or so. Those were very expensive, but it wasn't due to the mattress.

I would not pay $1800 for a mattress, even today with inflation......that is ...well I mean....If I had.....forget I just wouldn't pay that much I don't care how much money I had.

Sears was run by morons and it was doomed to fail. Surprised it stayed around as long as it did. Prices are nuts and the quality isn't good enough to match those prices. Walmart > Sears

I looked at the girl and raised an eyebrow "Why is this price so high, does the mattress do anything special?"

The girl looked down, a bit shy and mumbled "No, it is very comfortable though and it is easy to clean with these dusters, keeps it brand new even after you have been sleeping in it for months!!"

Hmmmm, I look at the duster and the bed then ask "That does sound nice, but the price is so high, I need to try this bed out first I think, before making such a large purchase".

The girl looks at me puzzled "Try it out? Do you want to sleep in it?"

I smirk and say "No, I am sure the bed would be fine for sleeping, but that is not it's only purpose, I will need your help to REALLY try this bed out, and then we can see how will it cleans up afterwards"

The girl gasps and looks around. As always this section of the store is completely deserted, she can go for hours without seeing another human soul. She can't believe what she has just heard but....she is soooo bored and any human company or contact would be welcome.

She says "I.....I.....ok, I will help you but we have to be quick, my manager can't find out.....and you better buy this bed!!!"

I grin, really happy with how this day is going and reach forward, sliding my hand along her arm before leading her towards the bed. Sears may be expensive, but it looks like the customer service is REALLY good.

Lol, what? I paid $2,500 for my mattress + box spring last year. They last over 20 years and you spend about 30% of your life on one, paying lots is normal.

I feel like if money wasn't an option, I might spend a bunch. Even if it's only slightly better than something much cheaper, I would probably buy it if I just had loads to spend on whatever. Currently, I'm not rich like that, nor do I think I will ever be. Haha.

Plenty of people pay that much for a mattress. iirc, the Tempurpedic mattresses can go as high as high as $3k or $4k and they're price-fixed or something.

Seriously? If I had unlimited money, I'm not sure I'd try to scrimp on a bed. I'd rather throw money at it to be done with the process.

Yeah, I'm in kinda crazy frugal mode right now, trying to spend as little as possible so I can work as little as possible and travel etc with my free time. So it just seems like a ton to me. I paid more then that for the beds me and my wife used, but they were they had the legs/head that went up down, and 2 seprate mattresses that were side by side so one could be at a different height then the other.

Just the mattress alone costing that much....I just have a hard time imagining what could possibly explain the cost. I know the California King we got back in 2000 or so...was $400? I think, we got a really nice frame/bed as well to go with it (just got rid of it when I sold my house actually even though we didn't use the king mattress for along time)...so the total was probably around $700 or so.....but that was BY FAR the most I had ever spent on a mattress up till then.

The bed we got (I donated it to a couple that really needed it) was expensive but you were paying for the electronics etc, not the mattresses (which were some kinda foam).

Oh well, the world is weird, over $1000 mattresses are normal now...i guess I need to just get with the times.

If you were just going bargain-hunting and settling for absolute shit, I'm not sure how cheaply you could find a memory foam nowadays. The more expensive ones nowadays have all sorts of crazy shit, like material that absorbs heat so you're less likely to sweat.

You should watch the show "Extreme Cheapskates". They are insane sometimes, but also have some good tips. I couldn't live like they do, but you may find things to help you save some money. One guy even seemed to be rich, but made his family live like they weren't. And hid like a bunch of money from them. But I think they knew he had it. Don't know what he was planning to do with it. Maybe something good. I don't think I finished the episode. I saw when the family got him to pay a little extra for bringing a few extra people to the all you can eat buffet...

Hehe, I have always used the all you can eat buffets once a day trick to save money. I still generally eat once a day, only now there is actually a diet based around it. Blew me away when I heard that as everyone has always said it's so unhealthy (I do eat almonds etc throughout the day though as snacks).

I will look up the show...I do pretty much have saving down though, it's kinda like my super power or something. Went shopping today at safeway and got the ingrediants for about 20 meals for $50 (including 6 steak dinners). All of those meals will be quite yummy as well!!

The girl at the checkout was shocked enough to mention I saved more then I spent, that usually happens, I just buy based on what is on sale. It's why I shop at Safeway still 95% of the time instead of Winco (although I get my almonds and stuff at winco from the bulk section).

I guess I did all the shopping etc, so my wife really didn't know about me being so frugal, and I was a great chef, so she was very happy, but yeah, it must have been hard on her that I was so resistant to spend a ton on mattresses etc. Never thought about it, just always acted that way.

My wife showed me that show (the couponing one) eons ago since she knew I shopped for deals. I never went that far though, the extreme couponing people would save 95% or more some got their groceries free or for like 25 cents or something etc.

I think my best (and I don't honestly remember anymore) was 87% or something back when I shopped at safeway and alberstons (they were right next to each other) across the street from the law firm I worked at. I would get the best deals from both and one time, I got about 200$ worth of groceries and had 87% (or somewhere around that) savings. I saved that receipt for years lol. I was so proud.

But I never cut coupons out of papers etc, just used sales in the circulars and just for u savings etc. Never made anyone wait behind me while I applied things etc in line. But I also was able to shop for 4, and usually save at least 50% (still do just for me like today). It's really not hard and I still did that while working full time, going to school full time and taking care of a disabled wife (and cooking/cleaning, paying the bills etc). It really doesn't take long and depending on how many people your feeding, it can save a ton of money.

I found a Craftsman electricians pliers recently, but something had chewed up the handle, so I took it to Sears to get it replaced under their lifetime warranty.

I should have kept the messed up pliers because they were still better than the piece of crap they replaced it with. The joint is so stiff I can barely use it. I've got some piece of junk made in Taiwan that's better.

When Sears Canada closed down, there were a number of stories of people finding that sale items had new, higher price stickers placed over the old ones so that the alleged discount just brought the price back down to what it was originally. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they inflated their mattress prices a bit before applying that 50% discount.

They do that, or at least did, at Safeway as well. Have a sale, inflate the price (rediculously), to make it look like it's a larger % off.

Havn't seen that recently though, but it used to tick me off a few years ago.

This is a common tactic for large sales. Even amazon does it. Pretty much every place that closes down does it. Its really not worth going to a closing sale until its multiple weeks in, and by then youll be scraping to find anything good.

This is so true. And even then, I carefully compare prices to Amazon to make sure the sale price is actually decent, and also brace that not much will be left when you go during when the greater discounts are occurring. It's totally stupid to buy things, during the first few weeks of a store's liquidation sale.
