Kylo Ren was never a good main villain, he was a fine character.

The mistake was making him the main villain in Last Jedi.

Also, there are no living threatening characters in the new Star Wars trilogy anyway. They are all portrayed as idiots.

Kylo Ren is an amazing character, but he has issues with his perception by most people

1. We don't see his reason for turning until TLJ (and even then we only see it devoid of all context), so his paranoid attitude towards his parents and the light side comes off as irrational and childish. Kind of the opposite problem that Vader had with the prequels.

2. Rey beats him in TFA. Though this was intended to make Rey seem amazing, it just had the effect of making Kylo look weak. Hence I've seen a lot of fans describe him as weak or incompetent, even when TLJ gives us multiple lines of dialogue specifically about how crazy powerful Kylo is (and TFA opens with him performing a never before seen force feat).

I've never seen TLJ, but I couldn't take him seriously in TFA because all he did whine and cry all the time. I guess what you mentioned too, but that affected the way I looked at him way less.

Either way, we still know of the joke, even if it wasn't shown. We don't know the exact joke, but what it was about... And some people agree with it.

He basically was acting like a spoiled child in TFA. Who else would have a tantrum and destroy a computer with a lightsaber? Even those two Stormtroopers recognized it and walked away.
