46 y/o Patrick Beadle, a musician from Oregon was sentenced to 8 YEARS in PRISON in Mississippi for possession of MARIJUANA that he LEGALLY bought is his state!!

Activists are outraged over the harsh sentence and state it's based on his race as well considering he was sentenced WITHOUT PAROLE as well for drug trafficking!!

He originally faced 40 years in the slammer after he had almost 3 pounds of marijuana in his car on March 7, 2017 when he was driving through Madison County.

A Jury convicted him in July and prosecutors even admitted there was no evidence he was "trafficking drugs" as he did not possess a large sum of money, drug paraphernalia other than the marijuana

He purchased the weed in Oregon where recreational use of the drug was approved in 2014 and medical marijuana was legalized in 1998. He had a medical marijuana card to treat chronic pain he suffers in both of his knees suffered from college basketball

Taking weed across state lines is illegal and in Mississippi as recreational and medical marijuana is illegal as well

He was stopped by police for crossing a fog line in the road as he was on a road trip to pay homage to blues singer B.B King in his home state but he believes he was a victim of racial profiling because of his dreadlocks and licese plate from another state.

Once stopped, police found his marijuana stash with an anounce of medical marijuana costing 50-100 each and spent 2300 to 4600 on the load of weed.

Tommy Beadle, his mother pleaded with the judge to not send her son to prison but they ignored her cries as he said he will not reduce his charge to simple possession since he was already convicted for drug traffickign

His attorney, Cynthia Stewart says his sentence will be appealed given the US is quickly changig marijuana laws and in 5 years may not even be a crime as the American Civil Liberties Union says Beadle was stopped and given a long prison sentence based on his skin colour

The ACLU has filed a lawsuit against the Mississippi Police Department for racial bias following the case claiming black people are targeted aggressively by police

Do you agree with this sentence?

8 years is too much but if it's illegal to possess in any form in Mississippi and is also illegal to leave the state of origin with it then he did break the law.

Ok, let's pretend that it isn't trafficking. It was a really stupid thing to do and he knew what he was doing was, not just illegal but HIGHLY illegal at that amount. It's STILL fair that he gets a couple years in prison. I rethought it and think maybe 8 years is a lot but give him 3 for good behavior and if he doesn't act good, give him 5. That's seems the most just

Look, I think this law is bull shit. As I live in Oregon, I can just walk a few blocks in any direction and buy some weed. And I do. But a lot of the Country is still living in bad times and if it's illegal, then it's illegal.

Yeah, I mean, bring 3 lbs into a state where it's illegal is illegal. Do you guys have a concept of how much 3 pounds is? I have seen a quarter pound before and it filled an entire large quart freezer bag. It's probably the equivalent of two bed pillows stuffed with weed.

It sucks, and it's severe, but he had so much and it's illegal in that state.

They could have given him 2 or 3 though, considering how quickly it is legalizing everywhere, but unfortunately that doesn't influence the law.

Consider the points this article brings up

https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/musician-convicted-for-trafficking-marijuana-in-mississippi/

Patrick Beadle, a Jamaican-born musician living in Oregon, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for drug trafficking in Mississippi, where he was arrested with just under three pounds of marijuana, which he says was for personal use.

Some of the reactions to this case have been strange: How can that be? He bought the weed legally in Oregon.

Well: Buy marijuana legally in Oregon, drive to Mississippi, get arrested, go to jail.

Comparable case: Buy a semiautomatic rifle in Texas, drive to California, get arrested, go to jail.

The states have different laws, as it turns out.

Beadle may not have been entirely legal in Oregon, either. Unless I am misreading the regulations, he had almost three times the maximum allowed amount for personal use.

Marijuana should be legal across all 50 states. But it isnt.

The states are not administrative subdivisions of the federal government; they are polities in their own right, with their own laws which, like those of the federal government, often are misguided.

The trafficking charge seems unnecessarily harsh; it seems to have been based on the amount of marijuana and on the fact that police say it was concealed in the car. The defense pointed out that there were no scales or other paraphernalia associated with drug distribution, no large sum of cash, etc. The trafficking charge carries a ten- to 40-year sentence; the judge imposed the relatively light eight-year sentence but could not reduce the charge to mere possession, because Beadle was convicted under the more serious trafficking statute. It may be that the prosecution overdid things in this case, but the jury didnt see it that way.

https://www.oregon.gov/olcc/marijuana/Pages/FAQs-Personal-Use.aspx

Q: How much marijuana can I have?
A: The personal possession limits are:

-One ounce of usable marijuana in a public place;
-Eight ounces of usable marijuana;
-16 ounces of a cannabinoid product in solid form;
-72 ounces of a cannabinoid product in liquid form;
-Five grams of cannabinoid extracts or concentrates, whether sold alone or contained in an inhalant delivery system;
-Four marijuana plants; and
-Ten marijuana seeds.
