I know people are "if I was a millionaire I would do this crazy thing or that crazy thing" But in all seriousness what would you do?

First off you will not have anywhere close to the total amount. First you have to choose which option you want the like 20 year payout option or the cash out immediate option. Most people take the more immediate option. Which cuts the total amount you get way up then you have to pay massive federal and state taxes (state depending on which state you live in) out of that Billion dollars from last night if you did the quick payout option after taxes you are looking at maybe 25-30% of that money really

This news channels site broke it down pretty well.
https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/mega-millions-how-much-money-will-you-actually-get-if-you-win-the-jackpot-/855947793

So now that you have a realistic picture of how much money you have which in most peoples eyes would still be an insane amount of cash. Now whats your personal goals?

For me I would probably in no particular order and probably most of which simultaneously.

- Immediately look at paying off my long standing debt. Student loans, medical bills, random stuff that may be on my credit report, pay off my vehicle..etc. I would quickly get rid of everything I owed to finally get that out of my life and wipe the slate clean.

- I would include my parents in that above process as well squaring away their debt. Making sure they are setup for the rest of their lives.

- Once the money had shown up I would definitely quit my job, I've never liked working never wanted to and once i had enough money, I wouldn't work a day longer than I had to. I know some people like to work and would at least change jobs to something they dream to do, but I...I would quit and never look back.

- Next thing I would do is look into getting into a new vehicle and house. I'm not after something crazy at all, I've never been a person that wants a mansion and a lambo or something. With this would be relocating. I would probably move back to the west side of the country some place with dry climate but not super expensive to live. Maybe somewhere in Nevada or something. I don't need anything massive really. So i'm thinking a 3bdrm 2bath w/basement which I would renovate from top to bottom to be a very digital/connected home, and a Tesla solar roof. I've always wanted one of those very precisely temp controlled showers with the water coming from like the 3 sides and the top. One of the 3 bedrooms would be converted into my gaming den. Something superior to my current gaming den. Car wise I would probably keep with the Tesla package and get one of their vehicles I think they have some new ones down the pipeline.

- Next I would work on my health, getting into doctors, dentists..etc. getting full work ups spending the money rich people can spend to get the best care. And being a bit vain and getting some stuff done like laser eye surgery..etc. Oh an the vasectomy I always wanted, now more important than ever..considering the next thing...

- If I hadn't found some hawt gold digger by this time then I'd probably take a nice VIP vacation to some ranch out in Nevada for some play time every so often. Though I imagine they'd sniffed the money mere days after I get it so I'll probably not have to worry about that.

And this would be it, I would spend my days enjoying the things I love to do, gaming, shows, movies hopefully lots of sex. With access to afford variety of foods I would be more apt to eat healthier and with everything to live for at this point would work to exercise and get fit and keep fit. I doubt I'd travel much, I'd probably invite old friends over for get togethers and stuff from time to time.

Find whatever strategy it takes to lose as little as possible. The gov't didn't earn it and unless you're 65+ there's no reason to take a lump sum.

After that I imagine family would get some just to do whatever with. Personally I wouldn't do a lot right away. My job isn't that stressful that I'd be in a rush to quit (hell it's one of the few things that keeps me from gaming all day). Might find a car that's a few years newer than what I have. Stuff some of it in a bank to earn interest. Sad truth is I'd probably put on a small addition and fill it with arcade games. The area pretty much doesn't have anything close. The only donations I'd consider would be pet shelters.

Taking a lump sum allows you to invest it and get a better return than the 20 year payout.

Pay off the debts of people close to me, maybe buy a reasonable house, then invest the rest conservatively (probably no more than 1-2% return over inflation, so nothing that's likely to result in any big losses) and never have to worry about money again. Probably donate a large chunk to some cause or other every now and again when those returns really pile up, since there's little sense in hoarding that kind of wealth indefinitely.

I'd take the 20 year payout. I've heard so many tales of people who've won the lottery then blown through it all in a couple years. lf you take the long term pay out, you have a guaranteed income for 20 years and hopefully you'll have figured out an investment strategy by then so you'll still have income after that. Plus you get the full amount, instead of half.

It's partly because the sort of people playing the lottery in the first place aren't people inclined to have a strong grasp of effective resource management in the first place, and partly because people who suddenly have access to dramatically increased sums of money tend to not really know how to handle it effectively.

If you're not the sort of idiot who starts going out buying multiple sports cars and solid gold toilets and other ridiculous nonsense, you could easily take the lump sum, then sensibly spend and reinvest in ways that ultimately give you more money over time than the long-term payout. Don't let having a ton of money alter how you perceive the value of money, and you'll be perfectly fine.

The two other things you basically need to keep in mind is that a) you really need to get a trustworthy financial advisor to help you administrate your money regardless of whether you take lump-sum or payments over time, b) a lot of people are going to show up begging for money, and you need to man up and be able to tell them to fuck off.

Assembling a 'team' sounds like a bad way to bleed money. Worse than having a few people come out of the woodwork. I always thought people would spend like crazy up front, not taking into account future fees like gas/maintenance/insurance on cars and houses.

The 20 year payout is what, like 50 mill a year? While reinvesting is kinda boring (and who can make sense of it all anyway), it's unlikely you're gonna spend THAT much in a year if you have common sense. Stuff it in any kind of interest-earning account and go from there.

I'd probably pay off my debts. And then my family's debts. Like the ones close to me. Parents, siblings, grandparents, my siblings family(if they have one), etc... Then, I'd probably move back home. And then buy a good sized house for my family to live in with me. That would be my mom and her boyfriend, my dad and his girlfriend, my grandma, my brother, my sister, and out pets. My pets would be able to stay inside because it's my house. I might try to adopt older pets to help them to not be put down early. I don't think I would work anymore. I would probably travel with my family whenever we got the chance. And I can travel to spend more one on one time, or with a certain group of them(Like just my parent, just my sibling, just the guys), or stuff like that. But the games I like without worrying about not having enough for them. And I may have to work out more (Which sucks) because I will be eating all kind of foods when I'm home. And I'm sure a good amount of them probably won't be healthy. I'd also hang out with my friends back home a lot. Because I miss them a lot. And want to hang out. Maybe buy like a small house to just hang out with them in. But I guess it would be based on how much I actually got. Oh, I'd probably do the 20 year thing.

I buy out the condo building I live in (it's not that large and I know most of the people there well enough to know they'd sell at the right price) and rebuild it from scratch (the location is amazing, but the craftmanship that went into building it was awful). Fewer units, and just keep the neighbors I'm friend with. The rebuilt version will have state of the art insulation (can't make it a single unit because of zoning, but again, location can't be beat).

Once that's done and taken care of, I keep a few hundred grands around to have fun with, but most of the money will just go straight in investments and I'll live from the interests until the day my wife and I die, at which point what's left will all go to charity.

Oh, and I'll probably buy a second home in one of those fancy Manhattan sky scrappers for when I feel like going out for real food.

The end.

Now on top of that for myself I never did come to any realization on what I wanted to do in life what I wanted to be, never discovered a definitive passion for a "career". I tried to be logical and pick something I figured would be useful and that didn't work out so now at 37 years of age I just do what I can to try and pay the bills. So I have "jobs" that I work at till they eventually lay me off (because company loyalty is no longer a thing these days they'll let you go without a second thought) and then go find another and I have no delusions that it will change. I can only always hope that my current job doesn't go sour and I have a stable rut I can find myself in.
