After 600 some hours I still have not finished the main story. For whatever reason I find myself constantly distracted when I load up the game, explore some dungeons, sell the loot, mess around with some guards, maybe continue down some guild quests, etc. without touching the main quest. I'll play a little here and there but I am still having fun.

Can the same be said of Fallout 4? Even if the story isn't its strong point, is it still a fun game when taken a little bit at a time or does some aspect get too repetitive to maintain that sense of fun? If it matters the only mod I'll probably use are UI mods.

Comments and opinions are appreciated,

Thank you

It's still fun, especially early when things are all new to you. I'd say overall the combat is definitely more fun than Skyrim's base combat.

Making settlements can be a nice distraction too.

Fallout 4 is better to me in the short term but it gets old far quicker.

At $15 though, worth it for whatever potential fun it has to offer? On another note I have heard good things about Far Harbor.

Interesting. Saving settlement and whatever gets too repetitive too fast?

Me personally I've never been into that sort of thing I got really into a couple of settlements and that was it. Well 3 to be honest. The rest I did bare minimal on what it took to make settlers happy.

It was actually nuka world that inspired me to make a few cool settlements.

Never had far harbor but I loved nuka world but I've wanted a joinable raider faction since I got into the series. I always make one pure evil char in games like this and none of the main Story factions where pure evil in my honest opinion. One can be argued but one could also argue they where bad but with a noble goal that just required breaking some eggs so to speak.

I liked skyrim a lot more.

I've played fall out 3 nv and 4, and I just enjoy elder scrolls more.

600 hours? This is why I've stayed away from these neverending games. I just can't have anything like that on the backlog. Well I kinda do, never played F3.

It was the opposite for me. I always got distracted in Fallout 4 and never finished the main quest. I love the settlement building aspect. I spent so many hours just building up settlements, powering up and furnishing houses, etc. You can even build houses from scratch which is pretty neat. Unfortunately the whole system is pretty clunky. I don't know, I feel there are way more places to explore and things to do in Fallout 4, but I only play those games when I'm in that roleplaying mindset.

I like both a lot for different reasons

In the end I think I prefer Skyrim because I just enjoy the atmosphere and lore of elder scrolls a little more, but FO4 has some really entertaining gameplay

The main story for both is not good. Its one of the reasons Im looking forward to FO76, I feel like BGS does their best storytelling just through the environment and books/terminals

I can see what you mean. I keep telling myself that I'm "done" when I've completed all the main and side quests but I keep getting distracted.

More or less the same for me. I need to be in that mood to want to go exploring a fictional pixelated dungeon.

Hah! Sneak/archery is my go-to approach in Skyrim which I can agree can kill the fun relatively quick. I run with a similar approach in Fallout: New Vegas using stealth and a silenced sniper rifle. Granted FO:NV resources is less abundant and the only way to farm anything is to wait for mobs to respawn and vendors to refresh their inventory.

Speaking of farming, how does that work in FO4? Similar to FO:NV? Wait till mobs respawn or do the "dungeons" of FO4 also refreshes loot inside?

The repeatable radiant quests? I figure those are just busy work or a way to kill time. I do enjoy the ones for the Dark Brotherhood and thieves guild though.

Its less for killing time and more a reliable way to grind for money. Sure you could probably get more gold with loot but as said reliable. You know exactly what you'll be getting most of the time.

I wished fo4 had more radiant quests than it did. Think the institute had the most but they didn't actually pay you in money which was lame

Fallout 4 was way too dumbed down for me to enjoy, there's only the bare minimum of RPG elements in the game in an already fairly casual series(Bethesda's anyway), no freedom in how your character might act or sound either since he/she always sounds like a robot with no emotion. Can't create a character with a background since one is already shoved down your throat. I hesitate to even call Fallout 4 an RPG, it's more like a shooter with light RPG elements.

I did really like the settlement thing though, just wish it had went deeper and had more and larger attacks happen

Skyrim is a great game even though it too is a little light on the RPG elements, in my opinion Skyrim is a perfect casual RPG game as it has enough to be one without over-simplifying it too much that a hardcore player can still enjoy it. And the atmosphere/themes were masterfully done and boosted coming off the very generic Oblivion.

there is zero need to grind for money in skyrim past the early game

The female voice had some emotion but I agree on not having choices in voice sucked. Even just a slider to change the pitch would have been better

The combat is fun but I didn't really feel much of anything with the way the story was presented. Also thought most of all the voice acting was dreary.

Off-topic but I randomly thought about the faction wars in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky. At first I enjoyed them thinking I can finally help out the factions I like and hopefully in turn it will strengthened them and make managing the Zone easier. Instead the game always bring the scale back to the middle and I find myself getting calls for help again to assist said faction in whatever are they reside in. With all the jokes about settlement if I do pick up FO4, I think I might just ignore em until late game.

Fallout has better characters and I really liked the Settlements. Overall Skyrim is still the better game, though.
