Owning a fully paid off $100,000 house is equivalent to paying $800/mo due to transaction fees when you buy, maintenance, taxes, and the missed opportunity to invest that money instead of having spent it on a house that only appreciates slightly more than inflation.

I also read on reddit today that the whole cult of "home ownership is the ultimate goal" was an anti-communism propaganda push in the 1900s to get more people tied into capitalism

Kind of reminds me of when the Prius first came out and people were obsessed with all the "gas savings!!", but the Prius cost $5,000 more than a similar car, and that ended up being like twice the cost of gas savings over the life of the car
