Anyone play any of those? I heard those were awful due to bad controls, god awful graphics (heard the GBC one looked like a clown threw up on it) and bad music.

I played a fair bit of Mortal Kombat 3. Mortal Kombat 4 was basically the same game with Color support and edited sprites.
If you want fighting games for Gameboy, look up Street Fighter 2 (was acceptable, kept 9 characters, lost E. I actually didn't find it that bad at the time. Of course the arcade and home versions were a lot better but it was still pretty fun in my opinion.
