http://icelandreview.com/news/2007/09/24/iceland-still-believes-elves-and-ghosts

Only 13 percent of participants in the study said it is impossible that elves exist, 19 percent found it unlikely, 37 percent said elves possibly exist, 17 percent found their existence likely and eight percent definite.

Illiteracy is a hell of a thing.

(Edit: To be clear I'm referring to TC and whoever made that show, not Icelanders)

It's interesting to see older more folk inspired religions exist today after centuries of franchising and consolidation in Western Europe. It's like a cultural time capsule. I can't think of any other examples.

depends what you consider western europe I guess. there's some old pagan traditions that are still celebrated in sardinia, finland and the baltic states. definitely all over eastern europe too

I'll be honest, back in my neopagan days, I used to truly believe in faeries. I remember I once went into the woods behind my house just before dawn and tried to talk to them. though thinking now, I am not sure if there would even be faeries in north america. maybe some native american equivalent perhaps but I am not sure what that would be

https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/10/why-so-many-icelanders-still-believe-in-invisible-elves/280783/

In one 1998 survey, 54.4 percent of Icelanders said they believed in the existence of elves. That poll is fairly consistent with other findings and with qualitative fieldwork, according to an academic paper published in 2000 titled The Elves Point of View" by Valdimar Hafstein, who now is a folkloristics professor at the University of Iceland. If this was just one crazy lady talking about invisible friends, it's really easy to laugh about that, Jnsdttir said. But to have people through hundreds of years talking about the same things, its beyond one or two crazy ladies. It is part of the nation.

one got slowly adopted by like half the world over the course of 2 thousand years. the other is ancient and most people don't even think about it anymore let alone take it seriously. so it sounds weird to them when they hear someone thinks it's real.

I mean, it sounds weird, but there are tons of things like this that other countries believe that are just as ridiculous and unfounded, like how people say if you shave, it grows back thicker, or how the Great Wall can be seen from space.
