I've been wondering this since I've gotten older and looked back at my high school years. None of that counts for anything anymore. All those times I've busted my ass, nobody cares about them anymore. All those times I tried to impress other people, nobody even remembers them anymore. Everything I currently have, it's only because I worked toward it in my adulthood. I could have failed all my classes, gone to a community college, and transferred to a four-year university. Was all that effort wasted?

In my personal experience? Not really. School is an actual meritocracy, where your success is actually based in your quantified performance, while "adult life" is mostly nepotism/cronyism, with pretexts of merit.
