Turn-based style with skill pathing, etc.

It just doesn't feel enjoyable ever since 13.

and there's news that the FFVII remake is action-based.

Wasn't FF13 turn based? Also it was better received that 15 so I don't see why they wouldn't.

And that's why I have zero interest in the FFVII remake. Something I never would have thought would be possible, since FFVII was my favorite game.

Yeah, I was put off by the chibi style but apparently, they made a bigger sized model of the main characters and I was able to pick it up. The more time I put in, the more I enjoyed the game. Too bad the latest update to it was just a cash grab.

Sorta, but not really. The turns could happen all at once.

I think they should seriously consider trying it for a main title. The last truly loved entry in the series (discounting MMOs) was 10, since then it's kinda struggled with both fans and critics. I think it'd be worth going back to basics and just seeing how it plays out.

I'd be surprised if people were against turn-based combat as much as SE seem to think they are. Provided the production values are there, I doubt most would give a crap -- it's not like their other versions of combat have been blowing people's minds.

You can only control the main character. Not micro every character like every game since the beginning of time.

The reason why people play FF games is because the story and content are always rich. Just look at the quality of the soundtracks in FFIX and the abundance of secrets to unlock. Their games these days feel too hollow.

Technically you do control all the characters in FF 13 with the paradigm shift. You tell the other characters what type of strategy you want them to take

Yeah, but you don't necessarily pick a specific skill to use at a specific time. It unnecessarily dumbs down the game.

Bravely default and octopath is pretty good enough. Fittingly, they're more fun to play.

You micro the main instead of the party.

Unless there is another FF where you are using up to 6 abilities a round across your party, and Im not remembering it.

XIII has a great combat system that the game couldnt utilize effectively.

We're not counting how many spells used in around. We're talking about the variety of spells, attacks, etc that you can unlock and micromanage in the battle system.

I think now, in a time where more and RPGs are ARPGs, a turn-based system in a AAA game would make waves. Personally, I've never really even liked ARPGs, and it makes me sad that they've completely taken over the genre.

Turn based RPGs are making a come back in JRPGs. Persona 5, Octopath, and DQ11 are popular recent examples.

No you arent, and it would still be a questionable take if you were. Ability selection isnt an issue in XIII, especially considering that debuffing is functional unlike most FFs, and SEN abilities mostly dont even exist.

Theres still a lot of room for improvement, of course.

Ever since Kingdom Hearts exploded, there's nothing but ARPGs.

A true AAA JRPG would be great. The market is saturated with the same boring concept of ARPGs.

So true. It's like they deleted all the world+game building knowledge before FFX.

FFXV is so edgy, it's pathetic.

I hope they keep going with FFXV type combat and just round it off better. Magic was a mess. Turn based just isn't entertaining to me anymore unless it already has a special place on my brain like FF6 and the Mother Series

Why does every game have to "progress"? I would love ten games of final fantasy turn based with just a different plot/characters/etc

Same thing with Phantasy Star, Wild Arms, etc.

id be k with a system similar to some tales of games i played in some of those i keep losing vs a boss and noticed i can avoid grinding if i just switch from one character to the next one after entering a command

sometimes is the only way to keep all characters alive to beat the boss without over leveling

I agree whole-heartedly. They had a winning formula that they abandoned for the dumbest reasons.

what?

never played any" tales of" games ?
you can only control one character at a time but you can switch between them mid battle
controlling one is good enough for most fights but in some bosses i found i could beat them without having to grind by switching between all 4 give them a command and then switch to the next one ( by just pressing a button )

like making one to use tigerblade and while he does that change to the spell caster to move it away from an attack or start casting a spell and move to the next one

If button mashing is considered fun, play something like Dynasty Warrior or something. I love turn-based JRPG.
