This is where we can talk about various Germany-related things.

It can be anything modern, such as Angela Merkel, the state of the Germany economy, Germany culture, geography, or how Germany is reacting to Brexit. You can also discuss Germany's past, eras of which include the Nazi regime, East and West Germany, the Weimar Republic, the German Empire, and arguably all the earlier stuff, like its part in the Holy Roman Empire, and such.

Here's something random I discovered recently, while flicking through an history book. Before Joseph Goebbels became a senior Nazi, and one of the most important people to Hitler, he was just some random failed writer, who didn't see much of a future for himself. Kinda ironic, since Hitler was a failed artist himself, a painter, and then after that he became more political.

Germany is one of the places I wanna go to on vacation. When I think of vacation, almost all that comes to mind is food and drink that I can't get anywhere else. What would you recommend as far as regionally exclusive wurst und bier, and anything else tasty for that matter?

Also, at least one thing not food related.

That was more political stuff, I think Goebbels wanted to be more of a regular writer.

I'm no expert on German food, and to be fair, I would almost be scared to eat there if I was on holiday in Germany for a week. I do hear they're big on sausages, though. >_>

I like how the Stazi used to set up brothels, and then secretly film people they wanted to discredit having sex there. I must admit, that is pretty funny.

Despite being a filmbuff, I've never seen Fassbinder that I can think of.

But yeah, I've seen Sonnenallee, and it was a pretty enjoyable film. Little bit lightweight in some ways, especially the way it dealt with history, but still good. Must've been hard, growing up in East Germany. Also, if you want recommendations on other coming of age films, watch Hanna, Moonrise Kingdom, Y Tu Mama Tambien and Splice. All very enjoyable films, and Hanna is set partly in Germany as well.

East Germany was a pretty horrible place. I mean...the oppression. And how they built the Berlin Wall, and claimed it was to "protect" their citizens from the West Germans, and capitalist nations in general.

I can go to PR whenever I want, and I've toured the island several times over. I am so done with the tropics, though I know beaches are a huge deal for Germans. I think I've seen a few just snorting sand.

Who do you think where the most important people in the Nazi regime, other than Hitler himself?

I'd say Speer, Goebbels, Goring, Himmler, Rommel, and maybe Heydrich. Obviously there were plenty of other major Nazis, but I'd say those were the key figures. Hess was important early on, but that was all (and was disavowed by Hitler), and various other people weren't as important as some of the names I've given.

I find it a very interesting country. It started with the Nazi regime, then spread to other things like modern Germany and East and West Germany.

I'm thinking about writing a book set in Germany, at various points in time. I've been contemplating this for almost 6 months now. Originally, it was going to be a novel set in the Nazi regime, then it was going to be a different kind of novel in the same period, but eventually I thought it would be good to write a short story collection that covers the last 150 years or so of Germany history. There's so much potential. It would probably be a big book, as well, maybe 450 - 500 pages.

What do people think of this? Do I still not know enough? Is it just a bad idea to begin with because nobody wants to read a short story collection that long?

In any event, any one interested in the history of Germany must know about Kaiser Wilhelm II.

rBISvih

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_II,_German_Emperor

Kaiser Wilhelm II had no understanding of diplomacy and good manners. He said whatever he want whenever he wanted, regardless of how little sense it made.

His ridiculous off the cuff public declarations often isolated Germany. Reading them today, many of them sound like Trump tweets.

A famous example is the Daily Telegraph Affair ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daily_Telegraph_Affair ). Here's what he said:

You English are mad, mad, mad as March hares. What has come over you that you are so completely given over to suspicions quite unworthy of a great nation?

He also forced Otto von Bismarck to resign. Yes, Bismarck, now known as a german national hero. Kaiser Wilhelm didn't like Bismarck's peaceful ways. He preferred something more aggressive. The consequences were not good. For example, from the Wikipedia entry:

He also launched Germany on a bellicose "New Course" in foreign affairs that culminated in his support for Austria-Hungary in the crisis of July 1914 that led in a matter of days to the First World War.

A lot of people have talked about the Trump - Kaiser Wilhelm parallels.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2017/10/12/the-donald-trump-kaiser-wilhelm-parallels-are-getting-scary/

https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/what-happens-when-a-bad-tempered-distractible-doofus-runs-an-empire

https://global.handelsblatt.com/opinion/a-kaiser-in-the-white-house-794105

America has never had a leader quite like Donald Trump. One century ago, however, the Germans under Emperor Wilhelm II found out the hard way what can happen when a ruthless narcissist rises to the helm.

I agree, frozenshock, he was clearly a major figure in German history. I knew little about him until recently, but sat and watched some 1 hour documentary, and that caught me up.

I actually agree with the Trump comparison. They're both people who say random things that don't make much sense, and they clearly alienate and upset people. I suppose it's possible that Trump will also start a new World War (although with Russia, I wouldn't entirely blame him).

If youre writing short stories yes its fiction.

If youre talking about important figures you are looking at encyclopedia entries. What you want to do is do an entire compilation of German History, but literally all youve talked about is Nazis up until this point.

Ryetoast, I don't think you understand what "fan fiction" means. I suggest you find out.

I might have talked mostly about the Nazi regime in this topic, but as I said, I would to write about various periods. The Nazi regime is one of the most interesting, though.

I must admit, when I was first thinking about this short story collection, I had little to no idea about the modern part of it. I have quite a few ideas now*, but really had almost no clue at the time. Wikipedia and documentaries got me going for knowledge of both specific things, and the general zeitgeist (so to speak) of the modern German nation.

* Millennials living in 2010s Germany; women struggling to get taken seriously in the workplace; free elections; the internet; poverty in certain parts of the country; immigration; the alt-right making gains in culture; the recent Recession.

Not really. I don't wanna spout any nonsense on something I don't know as much anymore. I used to visit Germany yearly for 10+ years to visit family, but my Oma passed away a couple years ago.

But I still fucking love it. It's refreshing. It feels clean. The people are so friendly and helpful. The layout is gorgeous, and I still have nostalgia trips over memories.

I was there during the 2006 World Cup when Germany hosted, even though they lost

I was then there in 2010 when they WON, which was amazing.

My mom's cousin owns a Biergarten, so we just got hammered.

For years, I've thought of modern Germany as like in the video below. Graffiti all over walls, really poor council estates, hulks of cars just left lying around...people occasionally killing each other. I'm not entirely convinced this isn't an accurate impression.

Warning: video contains violence, and also major spoilers for the film Hanna.
