Here's a question: why does so much talk about WW2 and the Axis Powers, focus on The Nazis and the Japanese? The Italians barely seem to be mentioned at all. Where they considered that unimportant, by both sides at the time? Although, nobody likes a flipflopper, I suppose.

Back when I was a hell of a lot more invested in the history of WWII, if I had what you might call a "specialist subject" in it, it was the wartime role of Romania: military, political, economic, and genocidal. I don't have any personal connections to Romania, but then you don't need German connections to be interested in Hitler's Germany either

Out of the 5 "main" periods of Germany, how would people order them, in terms of how interesting they are?

For me...

Nazi Germany > East and West Germany > Modern Germany > German Empire = Weimar Republic.

I still don't know that much about the Weimar Republic and the time of the Empire, I guess, but they just don't seem as interesting as the rest of it. My basic rule is that the more messed up and horrible the time period, the more interesting it is. I suppose the exception to this is modern Germany. I think historians might agree with me, since Nazi Germany is there main obsession, when it comes to Germany.

I think the Franco-Prussian war period is the most interesting period in German history that isn't Nazi Germany. Hell, the Franco-Prussian War explains a lot of worldwide military strategy changes in the early 1900s.

Hey, I just saw an interesting documentary on WW1, focusing on the relationships between the 3 main monarchs who were leaders of their countries at the time.

It's pretty disturbing, in a way. I mean, the three monarchs were first cousins to each other, but Wilheim didn't seem to have any problem waging war on the other two. Worse still, when Nicholas II asked George V (I think it was George V) for asylum for him and his family, as the Bolshevik Revolution was getting going, George said no. I didn't even know this until today, despite having a decent knowledge of Russian history. I thought the Tsar, i.e. Nicholas II and his family were just suddenly attacked by the revolutionaries, without really seeing it coming, then quickly line up and shot. But that's the thing, I don't actually understand at all why George V said no to asylum. I'm really confused. They were first cousins, and from what I know, had a close and friendly relationship, then George turns around and backstabs him. Why did this happen?

There was fear of Bolshevik revolutionaries being amongst their ranks during wartime and the nations were already beaten down by war fatigue as it was.

Frankly, the Romanovs didn't really have a chance of escape in the first place.

I just saw an interesting documentary about Hitler's family. It brought up some stuff I didn't really know before.

- Hitler had a half-sister, called Paula Hitler, who lived incognito (in Austria, I think), who was a pretty decent person
- Hitler had a nephew called William Patrick Hitler, who wasn't TOO bad, but was an annoying self-publicist, who used his family connection to get newspapers to pay him money for articles on his uncle
- William Patrick Hitler also fought against Germany in WW2, for Europe, but later on he suddenly realised all this fame wasn't such a brilliant idea, and spent a long time living anonymously and in terror

Of course, like a lot of dictators, Hitler wanted to obscure / bury / "improve" his past. Not just to make himself look as good as possible, and gloss over problems, but also that idea that "the chosen" don't have regular families, were never children, etc. and just appeared one day, with great things ahead of him.

Having said all that, I suspect that only people that really mattered in developing him, where his father (who he disliked and was afraid of), and his mother (who he loved a lot, and was very upset about the death of).

I wonder who the most important German's from the country's history are?

Hitler, Goebbels, Speer, Honecker, Albricht, Merkel, Mann, Wagner, Bach, Kohl, Nietche, Wilhelm I, Wilhelm II.

Those are pretty much the most important people, or most of them, perhaps. Important politically, culturally, or philosophically. Admittedly, quite a few of those people were monsters.

Here's something interesting. There are certain rules about how you can name German babies.

Children can have several German first names, which traditionally are inspired by relatives. However, with the aim to protect the well-being of children, there are some restrictions on German first names to reduce chances of being ridiculed. As such, German first names must be officially approved by the Standesamt (local office of the population register).

Thus German first names must:

be recognised as proper names they cannot be absurd or degrade the child in any way.
not associate with evil (eg. Satan or Judas) or be insensitive to religious feelings (eg. Christus or Jesus cannot be German names).
not be a brand, a surname, an object or the name of a place.
indicate the child's gender if a neutral German first name is chosen, then a second name must be added that is gender specific.
must not cross gender a boy's name cannot typically be chosen for a girl and vice versa (with the exception of Maria, which can be placed as a boy's second name).

I disagree with the first rule, because it doesn't feel like the kind of rule that should exist in a free society. I agree with the second rule. I disagree with the third rule, for the same reason as the first rule. I disagree with the fourth rule, which just seems kinda silly, plus there are a few good gender neutral names, in places like Britain and America. I basically agree with the fifth rule, although social justice warriors probably wouldn't (what a surprise).

What do you think of them? Good rules or bad rules?

I have some more questions, if you're willing to answer them.

1. What are the main news channels in modern Germany? What is the political slant of them?
ARD, ZDF, WDR...all public channels that try to remain as neutral as possible. It's pretty stale stuff...left leaning though.

2. What are the main newspapers, and what kinda of slant do they have?
Dunno, hardly read many newspapers. I get most of my news from Spiegel Online and various online sources. Many from international broadcasters.

3. Given how much of a strong work ethic the average German adult has, how are lazy people in the workforce treated? Fired, then tried, then executed?

Sure, if you are lazy and don't do your job you will get fired. Can't imagine it's different in any other functioning economies.

4. What kind of cars are Germans driving these days?

Obviously the typical german cars...Audi, Mercedes, BMW, VW, Opel.
I personally drive a Volvo V40. I really like it, same goes for most new Volvos. They have gotten more popular with their newer models.

Been seeing a lot of Skodas and Fords lately. They seem to be the new cheap but efficient middle class business person car.

Thank you, ALIEN.

You know, it's funny. I hardly speak any German, and yet the 3 German posters on this board that I know of all speak very fluent English, to the point where a person would probably assume they were American citizens, or British citizens.

Of course, English is a much more widely spoken language than German, which explains why Germans seem to learn it so well. Probably the only foreign language taught in German schools.

German is a very nice language, though.

Yeah, but you 3 are so fluent.

I mean, obviously there are Germans that don't really speak English, and you wouldn't see them here, but some Germans speak the language very nicely. I was never much of a polyglot myself, foreign language class being the only subject I failed at secondary school (it was German, actually). I know a little Spanish and Latin, but not even semi-fluent in either.

I don't like this view, though, that people who speak a few languages are really smart. I'm pretty sure a dumb person, give enough time and a good enough teacher, can fluently learn Foreign Language X; also, a smart person might struggle with learning foreign languages.

You know, Germany cinema isn't too bad. I haven't seen many German films, but they're quite enjoyable. Not many of them make a mark on international cinema, though. The only ones I can think of, are The Lives of Others, Sonnenallee, and Run, Lola, Run.
