I was interested in getting a Sega classic system a while ago but read that they are not actually made by Sega but some company Atgames I think that just has a license from Sega, are any of them any good?

I never looked at most of their stuff, but the one I did look at was a few titles that show up in most Sega compilations on consoles, and mostly terrible 'original' games to pad the numbers. Avoid.

AtGames are supposed to be really bad. Even the clone consoles like Retron 5 seem to be bad at emulating audio. I'd just get the Genesis Collection on PS3/360 if I were you.

I would just get the latest Genesis compilation if you're mostly looking for a curated library.

I've not actually used one of the Sega ones but they have a pretty bad reputation, so unless you see one dirt cheap I'd avoid. I guess if its inexpensive enough it might be worth fooling around with.
So if you are specifically after Sega Genesis stuff this may not be useful, but the Super Retrocade had close to 100 licensed games from Capcom, Data East, and some other big name companies and is pretty great... at least, it has a lot of stuff that I'm a fan of. It also has an SD card slot that, uh, if you really want to play Sega Genesis games or other older console or arcade games that aren't already preloaded... then I guess you could seek permission from said companies to legally use roms. --- ...
